Ice Bucket Challenge

I know anything that raises money for charity is good and all, but sometimes I can't help but notice certain disparities in the world.

I wonder how many people have donated money to charity vs the number of people that have done this.

This is why these challenge things annoy me, as most celebs just use it as a free PR exercise that dailymail readers love to see, yet give sod all to the charity in question. Atleast charlie sheen (of all people!) raised the bar and has hopefully changed it into a far more charitable marketing venture.

From his point of view its win win. $10k for PR that makes you look extremely positive in the public eye? Cheapest self promotion anyone could ever do.

I just find the idea that people need an Internet fad to be aware or illness or charity pretty depressing from the onset. Not to mention public acts of charity are more about being seen to be charitable than any actual genuine concern.

This fad just appears to be wasting perfectly good drinking water (in most cases).

When you pray, you are not to be like the hypocrites; for they love to stand and pray in the synagogues and on the street corners so that they may be seen by men. Truly I say to you, they have their reward in full. But you, when you pray, go into your inner room, close your door and pray to your Father who is in secret, and your Father who sees what is done in secret will reward you.…

I haven't seen a single penny raised by anyone of the people on my Facebook page, I just don't understand this, I knew what ALS is and I don't frankly think having a bucket of water poured over your head is going to make anyone donate anymore towards it.

Like people have said before, it's not a challenge to get a little wet. :/
******* retarded is what it is.

Exactly the same as all the no make up ones, until enough people moaned it was pointless and women started posting Just giving sites to go with them, unfortunately that doesn't seem to have happened this time cause the giving novelty has worn off from these challenge things, otherwise we'd have no money left.

Makes me laugh all the rage comments. Anyone would think you were forced to sign up to facebook to see the stupidity of the masses.

Its strange not having facebook....you immediately become an outside observer to society and realize the majority of the human race are crazy/stupid/egomaniacs/all of the above, I'm treated with suspicion immediately when I tell people I dont use facebook.....an example of the craziness......

Especially as it is tax deductible, so actually free.

erm no... I'm not sure why people think that - a donation coming from your gross earnings as opposed to net earnings doesn't make it 'free', you've still got to make an actual donation

you don't have to be self employed, you can do the same thing in the UK despite being payed PAYE - just select the box that allows the charity to claim gift aid... same effect, it basically means you can donate £10 by actually donating a smaller amount and the tax you'd have paid to earn that smaller amount gets added on too.

Exactly why I responded to my "nomination" with a screenshot of my monthly donation to Prostate Cancer UK which my old man successfully fought last year. It's good that awareness of charities (particularly something like MND which isn't one of the big charities) is being raised but I have my doubts that many people on my facebook who have done the "challenge" donate to charity at all, regardless of making a donation for doing the "challenge".

It's not facebook that annoys me, it my resentment towards the many people doing it. If anything I think it devalues the seriousness of a illness or raising money for it when a charity take a pointless act and make it a fad. Which in the end gets so overdone that the message is lost in the swarm of cretins trying to outdo each other.
If these challenges were entries and cost money the amount of people doing it would be massively reduced. I don't find that funny that, that's the case. Your not challenging yourself to achieve a goal, your mentally challenging yourself to be a sheep.

I don't claim to do anything for a charity but at least I don't, do something for charity and then don't give them money!

I don't mind if a lot of people do it as it generally brings attention to a cause that wouldn't really be in a lot of minds otherwise. Its also good that there are celebrities out there that are willing to bring a bit of fun to raising money for charity.

What i don't really want to see is a couple of chav girls who are only doing it to get their youtube video more hits with no intention of giving to the charity. That said i am certain that a lot of celebrities out there will be doing it for their own promotion.

I get this all the time. People look at me like I have two heads when I tell them I don't use FB.

What's the point of raising awareness for a charity. It's like having a charity event, a big huge rock festival, and at the end the counter rolls over and the whole events has raised £10. Well done people, well done.
