If you don't have Facebook you don't exist... virtually

No, I'm pretty sure no-one has mentioned anything like that on this forum before... >.>

It's been mentioned, but everyone is just fine with it, thank you very much. Or they have a problem with it but just not enough of a problem to do anything about it. Or they'll say it's "tinfoil hat" as someone said earlier in this thread.

Likewise when I posted a link on Facebook about privacy concerns, several people shared it and commented that it was terrible. But they all stayed there.

That's what FB needs. It doesn't mind how much you hate it, as long as you stay there. In the meantime they'll carry on monitoring your life and reading your private conversations.

One of the most interesting times was when I tried to log in and a message came up saying, "your account is being reviewed, come back in two hours". No idea what that means but it's worrying.

Complete BS

You really are special.
Facebook can work exactly how you want it to work.
For instance and this is a bit radical, you could set up an account called eg Lysander and then post to random people about how rubbish Facebook is and they will know nothing about you except after a few posts they will know you belong in the David Icke Facebook page.

+1
The information acquired through these means have been used against people already. Just because it doesn't effect you now doesn't mean it won't in the future.

I'll summarize with a powerful quote from Martin Niemöller:

When the Nazis came for the communists,
I remained silent;
I was not a communist.

When they locked up the social democrats,
I remained silent;
I was not a social democrat.

When they came for the trade unionists,
I did not speak out;
I was not a trade unionist.

When they came for the Jews,
I remained silent;
I wasn't a Jew.

When they came for me,
there was no one left to speak out.

To summarise my views, I'd rather Facebook have some personal information about me than join the growing horde of boring preachers who feel the need to tell everyone they aren't on Facebook.

We don't care. Keep it to yourself.

Obviously you do care, or you wouldn't have made a point of saying you don't care. Did you go on FB and post about how you hate people who don't have FB?

You sound overly defensive for somebody that doesn't care.

i am pretty much only on facebook as a name and what i accept from others in regards to 'tags' etc
i dont post opinions like 'zomg so bored' or anything tbh. I rarely check it and never on desktop. Dont change my profile pic and generally avoid it. No one from work is on there and never post anything at all about work

Right, there are two separate points here.

Everything I said in the second paragraph of the OP. Yes, you may not give them all that info, but you'll give them a lot of it. And they'll try and get more. They're very sly, how they work. Putting in little buttons for you in the margins, things for you to rate and click that take you a fraction of a second. All this tells them more and more and more about you.

So let's say I open a new Gmail account and sign up to Facebook with a pseudonym and join open groups - what exactly will they be taking from me?

Very little at that point. But they'll know your interests because of those groups. Also, they will likely be able to know that it's you that's running this new account. Now, I don't know how they manage to know this but they do. When I opened my old account years ago, they suggested me friends from an old workplace. But I had never talked about that workplace on FB, and none of my friends knew those people. It was quite scary.

thread gone wayyyyyy off topic!

Yeah it has, but six pages in that was going to happen.

No, I barely post anything on Facebook, I use it to talk/organise things with my friends. The reason for my post here was because I hope to reduce the number of people who try to preach about how evil Facebook is when I'm trying to have more interesting conversations.

There's nothing defensive about it, I use Facebook for purely selfish reasons and don't care what anyone else thinks about it. I'm just telling you why people have a weird look when you start talking about how you aren't on Facebook. It's a "oh god not another one of these guys" look.

P.S. - I post/do/talk about a lot of mundane things that I am not emotionally invested in. This is one of them. Talking about it does not mean I care, it just means I currently have nothing better to do.

You are one of the most paranoid people i've encountered online.

It may come as a surprise to you but chances are nobody gives a flying **** about your life or your private conversations and not a single living soul other than people you know in real life will have looked at your facebook page or read a message from you.

As I said earlier.

"your account is being reviewed, come back in two hours"
