If you don't have Facebook you don't exist... virtually

i've practically stopped using it. i no longer post and have no personal details on my page

i don;t see anyones posts on my wall, just tailored for info on music / events etc

i would close alltogether if it wasn't for the fact that so much is organised though it these days, i'd lose out if i closed it i think

anyone could post a picture of you without your consent and tag you.

You know that there's privacy options that allow you to review (and approve) tags before they get posted to your page?

Unless you're worried that friends could 'tag' you on their photos/pages? In which case, that's irrelevant, as it can happen whether you're on Facebook or not - and has actually been a problem since long before Facebook. The only solution there would be to get better friends.

Facebook really matters,
Anyone can see,
Facebook really matters,
Facebook really matters to me......

mama, just poked a man
Moved the mouse over his wall,
Pressed the button, now its done.
Mama, now hes quite annoyed
So I'll go and do it again, and again...
mama oo00oooo
Only tried to make you cry,
So I'll be back again this time tomorrow
and Carry on, carry on, 'cause facebook really matters...

Oh look another reatrded post.
Fb only has what you post, dont wnat to put your phone number in, work etc then dont. [..]

Facebook also has what anyone else posts about you and if you use it at all it will gather as much data as possible on you (e.g. your physical location whenever you use it), so your basic point is wrong.

It might not have the same degree of intrusiveness as NSA, GCHQ, etc, but it's far more accessible to a far larger number of people.

I don't use and never have used Facebook because I think it's far too expensive for what it offers, but I know it has gathered some data on me anyway.

True anyone can post a picture of anyone fb or not, still id rather not chance it fb allows people to go nutz with pictures and coments and not everyone has a good day. Regarding better friends.... a friend today an enemy tomorrow.

No.

We differ on knowing how much data Facebook gathers and we differ on what we consider to be the value of that data.

Yes, that's the same thing. The data is valuable to them as a market research/advertising platform, I agree, but it costs me nothing.

I had a big falling out with my best mate over this recently.
We went on holiday to India together and I took loads of pictures and shared them in our Dropbox folder.
He then uploaded them all to Facebook, even pictures of my family who live out there, I asked him to take them down but he kept refusing.
He has no real significant reason of not having them there, IMO he's done it so he 'looks' cool to others but in reality no one cares.

I've pretty much given up using Facebook, it gives you a sense of something and you think you'll miss it when it's gone, but you don't.
I still have the account and have people message me occasionally, but I don't actually go on the site very often. Maybe once every 3-4 days.
A lot of people seem to spend a lot of time looking at other peoples profiles and just spending endless hours on it. That is the thing that really weirds me out, in that how can you spend a life on a website?!

Your better off without him. Had a similar falling out with a previous mate, way I see it if that person does not respect your privacy and safety then that person would not in a million years like it if the roles were reversed.

How would your friend liked it if you did the same and posted his family pictures up all over fb ?

Its a great shame when someone does not listen or simply thinks they are "right" and you are "wrong" but this reveals how evil that person is and how much better off you are without that person.

Always remember, a friend today can be an enemy tomorrow !

As someone who has always been against fb, i have always found the reaction from users of it, when i criticize the site, a bit out of the ordinary. Its not as bad as it used to be. But some people defend FB more than they would other sites for some reason. Some people get quite worked up when it is criticized.

Some people consider having 1000 friends on Facebook as something to be proud of; a real life achievement - and how very dare you criticize it.
I do use it, but only to check out girls I meet briefly. My profile page is barren.

given your past posts im going to guess it's not your lack of an FB account that's giving them that look.

You obviously don't understand the masses. Or could be one. This is no different to the school days. You're in the gang or not. Nearly everyone wants to be popular/liked and not be left/singled out. Those who are strong minded are a minority or seen as a threat/weirdo/alien.
