IL-2 Sturmovik: Cliffs of Dover Anounnced with 128 player multiplayer

no one should buy a game without reading reviews- I wont either ;)

BUT!!! It's IL2 in name only now - RoF gfx engine, RoF physics, RoF people at the head. So dont judge them by CLoD, judge them by RoF ;)

The huge question is how ROF engine wil cope with monstrous ground war that was Stalingrad. THey do say that engine will evolve, but...
Making a few assumptions there aren't you?

True, but they had a good rep with the IL-2 series, I expected the same quality, more fool me. £50 down the swanny. I think I have logged 3 hours in Steam.

I love Barbarossa, so very interested in this.

I'm interested in getting ROF, which edition would yopu suggest and how will it play on my system?

:)

First, you should be able to play CLoD no problem (with clouds off, effects medium, everything else- max). You really should download this RAF campaign that replaces the stock pathetic one . http://simhq.com/forum/ubbthreads.php/topics/3654577/Modded_stock_RAF_campaign_New_.html#Post3654577

RoF is free to play! http://riseofflight.com
You get 2 planes with unlimited online and offline functionality. I would also recommend to buy St Mihiel campaign and two planes that you need for it. Also DR.1 triplane is a marvel of physics - both in real life and as model in RoF.
Your system will run it maxxed out (sans supersampling).

Thanks, I just need a new stick now my old Sidewinder gave the ghost up a while back, any recommendations? I'm looking at the cheaper end of the market.

Microsoft Force Feedback 2- only available second hand, but it's built not on mechanical but optical sensors and will probably outlast most new joysticks. It has the best force feedback - wonderful in RoF, but also in Il2 and (less so, but still good) CLoD; it's among the most precise joysticks and has a smooth centre that does not get in the way when aiming. It's about £40 on fleabay, and it beats any other joystick feature/quality wise. It's even better than £250 Logitech G940.

RoF was coded with MSFF2 primarily in mind.

TrackIR is an awesome thing to have with flight games nowadays as well ;)

I'll see if I can find one.

It's also about 140 notes! :)

Possibly in the future.

Cheers.

Fleabay is your friend again - I got my TrackIr for about £40 couple of years ago, I was only starting with IL2 and it completely transformed it to such an extent I got completely hooked on it... Well, I would have anyway, but trackir is a great invention :)

There is also FacetrackNoIR which is free and works with your webcam- never tried it, but heard that its decent and comparable to earlier versions of Trackir.

Sounds good.

I don't have a webcam, but I will look into it.

Back to the stick, I did use to have a sidewinder until it died (not the posh FF pro one) but it was excellent all the same, so smooth, far better than the Saitek stick I replaced it with.

Yeah , I also had a Saitek and didnt like it. Biggest problem was the spring loaded plate that they install on all their joysticks as a centering mechanism thing and it would stick at random points when trying to make small aiming adjustments - very annoying. Microsoft made excellent joysticks (not just the FF2), I have no idea how they managed to go bust there.

Make sure you dont forget to give that CLoD RAF campaign a go- it's pretty good stuff and its free.:)

Yeah, that was the issue, I had an awful job trying to centre whilst shooting, trying to make tiny incremental adjustments anticipating the sticks movement and that of the aircraft your attacking AND the gunsight.

Nightmare.

I hvbe bookmarked the campaign thanks.

Yeah, I dont understand why Saitek pushes that centering plate on all their joysticks, but people dont seem to mind it somehow  I remember I also tied two coils of the spring together with a wire to make the spring softer and also added some silicon oil to the centering plate to reduce friction.

MSFF2 was the ultimate solution for me though :)

It will be ROF engine, no assumption there : http://forum.il2sturmovik.net/index.php?showtopic=31

And BlackSIx already confirmed that An.Petrovich (th guy who coded AFM for LockON's Su25, and in part DCS Ka50 as well as all of RoF's physics) is in charge of BOS physics again -no need to assume again :)

Ahhh, nice. Didn't see that the FAQ had been posted when I looked yesterday, can't say I'm overly impressed though, I've never realy liked RoF much :(

Such a waste too.

RoF has two limitations compared to ClOD:
1. Poorer graphics
2. Severe limitation on number of units on a map (if I remember correctly about a 100 compare to CLOD's 1500- massive difference)

RoF's biggest draw is its physics, there is simply nothing close to RoF in that apart from DCS and Falcon BMS.
But also RoF is very good at what it does, like its graphics are not as good, but it's draw distance is massive - clod's pop up was abismal, plane flew in a middle of an obvious circle in which trees, buildings, units were drawn. And even within that circle some things like aircraft hangers would pop up when you're nearly on top of them. RoF has NONE of that- things appear on the horizon and grow into view. RoF has working AA.

So gfx are not a big deal, as Clod's graphics simply bit more than they could chew - looks good, but too many faults.

But unit limitation is a big worry for BOS, Stalingrad with 100 units on the ground would be [pathetic...

RoF DN engine does not have 3d trees, I wouldnt hold my breath. On the upshot, it also does not have the flickering shadows of CLoD's 3d trees. Does War THunder have 3d trees?

But this vid is all about cool physics imho :)
