I'm getting fat :(

It's not rocket science - Eat healthy and more often in smaller portions and get off your fat beer swilling arse and do some exercise.

OH AND STOP WINGEING

lol yes it's quite true. The only way you'll lose weight is by making an effort and some big changes, there's no easy way out.

As has been said, the simple calories out > calories in rule will automatically make you lose weight. The average recommended daily amount of calories is 2500 for a male, so you really want to be shooting below that. If you can get your calorie intake to about 1500 a day you should see some changes. Exercising will speed things up.

Another vote for reading GordyR's thread, he knows a lot more about health than the rest of us put together (http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=17401146).

My suggestion though, as your probably just a average bloke and not a greek adonis is to stop drinking beer, get a bit more veg in (think stir fry instead of chips or curry) and walk places more.

Doesn't need to be massive - park half a mile away from work and walk the rest, walk to the shops.

The biggest thing you can do though is give up the beer - alcohol in general infact. One pint will give you over 200 calories, have a bit of a session and you'll be getting close to your recommended daily intake on beer alone

So hard to give up beer, they make so many nice ones :(

I think it varies for beers but isn't like a pint of guiness 350 cals? even worse lol.

"Per pint, Draught Guinness has 210 calories; as a reference, one pint of semi-skimmed milk has 260 calories and one pint of orange juice has 220 calories. Draught Guinness actually has fewer calories than most other premium beers and lagers."

Oh well better start downing the pints of guiness in the morning as a replacement for orange juice.

Guiness is actually good for you anyway... search on the beeb for a recent article.

Can anyone here *not* ride a bike? Like me. I said earlier I haven't been on a bike in 10 yrs... it's more like 15.... and I just went and got my sister's bike out the garage. Suffice to say I have forgotten how to ride a bike. Something I didn't think was possible :D

im in the same boat as the OP.. i tried to take up the gym but its just having the time to do it. as im currently at my house a lot doing it up or spending time with family.. i know its a lame excuse.

im 5'9 and i think just 13 stone (i wear size 36 jeans). i feel quite fat. my legs are like tree trunks lol. i dunno whether its fat or muscle. i am constantly going up and down stairs all day.

Breakfast is a bowl of rice crispies with a bit of sweetner

my lunch consists of a sandwich made of brown bread and usually just chicken and maybe some salad cream, NO butter. i also have some carrots with that a drink and maybe some boots shapers crisps (only 90 calories)

and my tea is usually always homemade food. none of that processed crap.

and i still feel like im gaining weight. i guess i just have to exercise more? going up and down stairs all day isn't cutting it probably..?

I joined a gym roughly 2 weeks ago, it's within 15minutes walking distance to my house so is very practical, I can even pop down on some mornings before Uni if I get up early (if I have late morning lectures).

Work up a sweat on the exercise bikes/rowing machines/skiing machines/running, do this for a constant 30 mins or so and you'll be fine. You can do swimming every other day too to mix it up a bit.

I'm yet to see any difference visually but it's very early days, and for the first week I was just pushing myself on the cycles trying to go an extra km a day, now i've got a routine worked out so hopefully should start seeing some change.

6' and god knows how much (haven't weighed myself in years :()
and size 40 jeans/trousers, legs are alseo like trees :(

what i used to eat was a load of crap :(

breakfast was cocopops or other sugery cerial (i never add suger btw)

lunch was whatever was in the fridge
or if at work consisted of crisps, white roles and chocolate

dinner was potato products and something

and i'd snack after work in the evening, sometimes on saturday night after work i'd eat a couple tubes of pringles, or sensations or whatever :(

last month i told myself to stop, and changed everything:

breakfast is usually bowl of cornflakes or shreaded wheat

if im at home lunch is 4 wholemeal toast
if at work its 2 apples 125ml of some form of juice (ie tropicana) fruit yoghurt and pack o' snakerjacks

dinner is what ever the hell my mum's cooking + salad if we have any in
(ie pasta dishes/ rice/ curry/ baked potao etc)

and no snacking

my exercise consists of work currently, as i spend almost 30 hours a week doing solid walking/pushing of trollies/lifting of baskets.

and for the first time in years i've started to lose weight, in 1 month i've lost 2" of my jean size (i was 42" (my greatest ever)). planning to get the bike out on my days off from next week, so hopefully it will start to go down quicker.

I doubt it exercise wise. You need to get your heart rate up. How about everytime you go up the stairs SPRINT up, down and up again. Likewise on the way down sprint down, up then down. I really mean sprint. That's if you go up and down a lot... ou should be doing at least 30mins high heart rate activity a day I think.

A good idea is to weigh and measure yourself. Changes are slow and subtle so it can be hard to notice but if you look back over figures you can be surprised at how much you have changed. It helps to give you motivation as well and something to aim for.

Yeah that's true, however I was always under the impression that going by weight isn't always the best way, as I haven't done much exercise in a while I would have thought I'd be putting on weight as muscle too.

cheers. i might try that. :)

Something additional.

Take a picture of yourself (almost) naked, then compare it to yourself 6 months later. You will really see a difference :)

That's true, hence why you need to measure as well.
If you lose fat then areas like your waist and hips will likely decrease even if you put on muscle.
Likewise if you lose weight and your waist measurement increases then you know something's gone wrong :p
