Inception - July 16th

Inception is an action film with what is essentially a tremendously simple premise. The reason it works is because the premise is well fleshed out and considered, so the whole thing makes sense. Adding some big twist or ending would detract from that.

yes i guess your right. i think my preconception was that it was a thriller with a twist as opposed to an action film.

but was it just me, or for an action film were all the 'baddies' the projections a really really bad shot? i felt like for a bunch of trained army guys they couldnt really do much infact apart from Saito and then the woman getting th guy near the end there was no real fear of anyone getting injured at all?

Show me a single film in which you are genuinely worried about whether the heroes will survive, or will die without going out in some sort of "blaze of glory" or in a self-sacrificing Messianic nod. You'll struggle. We are so conditioned to believe that the heroes will make it and that is all that stories ever give us. The question is never "will they make it?" but rather "how will they make it?".

In bruge? the dude at the end thing.

Sorry, I forget which part you're talking about.

in the corridor of many angles it was as though kato was fighting with one of Leonadros men, then the security guard started fighting the leonadro man instead? i was like err... what? im not the only person who noticed this out of the group i went with. it was as though there could have been a sub plot that got cut?

Adding some big twist or ending would detract from that.

or add to it? like a genre bender? so that you feel decieved by the truth, you thought he was working for good to get his family back but actually killed everything or everyone in the process?

but also

on a seperate note, maybe he was dreaming from the time he was involved with saito. you remember when he comes around in the bath? and he starts to spin the thingy... then suddenly they are on a train and you never get to see if it was a forever spin or if it was going to stop? at that point i was wondering if it was a dream from there or not...

if you see what i mean?

harsh - would you have preferred:

Just saw it and
My mind was blown!
the only gripe was how to ending was sort of weak.

at least i added some ways to make an ending better, or actually discussed ways that i thought the film was flawed or could be improved etc.

you know... like to discuss something... in a discussion forum and stuff?

I know what you are saying Nick, i wasn't overly impressed with the film either and found the storyline NOT concept, pretty weak. i'd still give it 7.5 out of 10 though.

It's a heist film. I'm not sure how much plot you ever really get in those sorts of films, short of re-making Heat.

yea i mean dont get me wrong, im a cynic and a critic to the last. but i enjoyed the film - just to please me more they could have fed me some twists etc on the way.

as you say its still a 7.5 + film in its current conceptual format but that does leave room for improvement.

its a heist film where nothing actually gets stolen and there is no definite outcome as a consequence of the heist?

Nothing is supposed to be stolen, only planted, and - as with every heist film ever - the execution is more important than the result.

Consider - do we know, at the end of Ocean's Eleven, what anyone spends their money on?

no but they fail to heist the guy to begin with and then dont know the outcome at the end.

but i dont think the film was marketed as a action/heist film. to me it was hyped as a mind bender but it was pretty straight forward really..

guys hijak dreams, kill 'drones', plant idea, ta da. the end?

I'll grant you that it wasn't the mindbender that it was sometimes billed as. For me, the brilliance of it was that conceptually it is very simple, but really well executed.

yes like i say, its more Mission Impossible - 'how will they complete the mission' as opposed to The Matrix - 'is it real isnt it real? whats underneath the surfacet?!?!' but then it did take the matrix 3 films to get there,

Ah, that'll be where we differ then. The latter two Matrix films were pointlessly contrived and as a result were vastly inferior to the first.

Saw this film last week at my first ever Imax visit.

Was a great film, amazing sound, loved the way it unfolded.

It was almost disaster though, we arrived an hour early because it was Orange Wednesday and were queuing for about 15 minutes and had hardly moved.

I then got a little tip ;) from someone who works there and jumped a queue of 150+ people and got two premier seats before the nearly ran out.

*********Spoiler**********

The spinning top at the end of the film does start to dwindle and slow down, where as in the dream it went at a constant speed. Surely this means that the ending is reality and not a dream??????

It sounds like it's going to stop, but we don't see it, so we can't know.

In any case, it's just a stupid concession to audiences' current demand for a twisty type ending.
