That stuff around x86 is too much for my head, There is IP around then apparantly it had to go through the US Gov because of China. They were worried China would steal the sauce for x86 right?

Too late as the Taiwanese company,VIA,bought up Cyrix and Centaur Technologies and had the x86 license transferred to them - a few years ago they started developing custom x86 for China:

Something interesting:

"Zhaoxin Semiconductor, a relatively new CPU maker jointly owned by venerable company VIA and the Chinese government, was announcing back in 2018 that it intends to become a serious competitor for Intel and AMD." https://www.notebookcheck.net/Chine...7400-with-the-KX-6000-octa-core.424917.0.html

Their success will depend heavily on pricing. Unless they undercut Intel and AMD by a huge margin, not many will switch to what is an unknown brand to 99% of PC owners.

Good luck getting an import license to sell that in the major markets of the world.

Surely AMD and Intel between them have the patents to prevent any other party from entering the market.

Even if that's not true for non-x86 instructions sets, it's 100% true for x86.

And if you can't make an x86 chip you really are just stuck with low-power/mobile.

In the West at least, but they probably don't care about us, more than enough people in the East who won't be so picky!

If the western companies can export to the East, I don't see why the eastern companies shouldn't be able to export to the West.

It will probably be a Chinese only thing

Remember that’s a market of over 1 billion

They don’t need to export

We need a third major supplier in order to better deal with the duopoly/agreedments between intel and AMD that currently plague the PC market.
We are already tired of their PR treating us very badly, throwing at us crappy dual and quad cores, and if we are more lucky, rarely hexa-cores, torturing us with insane pricing, and slowing down the progress of the human race to a crawl.

We need a serious third x86 producer and Windows to support ARM CPUs which can be scaled to the high-performance computing tiers.

Plus Western governments are increasingly keen to adopt China's methods. Monitoring the internet, etc. I'm sure UK/US governments have already asked Intel, AMD to build backdoors for them.

Maybe that's a little way off, but I can definitely see a future where the UK/US police state demands Intel and AMD comply with their "security" requirements. Owning a Chinese CPU would be illegal by that point :p

Sure but it has no relevance for us if China only unless you import one via your local Chinese takeaway:
"That will be two egg fried rice with prawn crackers and a DIntAMel 32 core with a side order of L2 cache, all to go please".

It's probably optimistic to think that they're not already doing this! :(
