Intel bug incoming? Meltdown and Spectre exploits

It's pointless doing any benchmarks at the moment, until we get the microcode fixes the OS level fixes aren't enabled.

Using the commands listed here: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us...or-it-pros-to-protect-against-speculative-exe

I get the following result

Windows isn't enabling the fixes as there is no hardware support present.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but BTI is Branch Target Injection which refers to "Spectre" and requires firmware updates. "Meltdown" or Kernel VA Shadowing is fixed and I thought it does not require firmware updates.

Windows update doesn't work for me because I'm using Ryzen on Windows 7. Trying to install the patch gives me 0x80240037 error. Am I screwed unless I move to Windows 10?
You're not affected anyway, certainly not by Meltdown. Spectre 1 may require a BIOS update to fix although I'm not sure if this only applies to Intel and it can just be fixed with a patch on AMD.

Warning

Customers who only install the Windows January 2018 security updates will not receive the benefit of all known protections against the vulnerabilities. In addition to installing the January security updates, a processor microcode, or firmware, update is required. This should be available through your device manufacturer.

Note Surface customers will receive a microcode update via Windows update.
Great so nothing is actually fixed, or will be fixed, for the vast majority of consumers.

So is device manfacturer refering to Intel? or need a bios update for board?

Can't see msi, asus, gigabyte and so on suddenly releasing updates for boards that are 5 years old. Would hope mine (x99) gets an update, but even that's getting on a bit now.

Looking forward to digging my old Cyrix x686 out at this rate. That or not upgrading for 5 years until new architecture is ready.

This is essentially the equivalent of thalidomide or asbestos for the tech industry. Remarkable.

Well that's me stuffed then (for Spectre I assume). Most of my devices, including this laptop, are 5+ years old and unlikely to get a BIOS update. Yay. Thanks Intel.

We'll need bios updates from MSI, Gigabyte etc.

:(. Last update for me was 6 months ago to "improve ddr compatiblity", so hopefully gigabyte come through with one, and don't break anything while doing it. Would be shocked if anything pre-haswell gets one though and doubt most people are going to buy new to fix Intel's screwup.

Also don't know anyone who updates their bios, windows update is one thing, but average user aint doing a bios update.

The last bios update for my x58 board was jan 2012.
GA-EX58-UD5
(rev. 1.0)
I7 920 cpu

Will the windows patches fix the problem for me,or do i need to buy a new motherboard and cpu.

I cant see gigabyte doing a new bios fix for my board, which i bought in 2009.

It will come if at all from a Motherboard firmware update. Can’t see my see my 1366 Xeon getting fixed LoL

Nice. So we will have millions of exploitable machines due to:

Lack of bios updates & people who can't or don't want to pay to replace perfectly good machines. Nice Intel :).

I can see Intel CPU's on Z170 through to Z370 probably getting the updates, not sure before that but then so long as they get the kaby-lake microcode out I can use UBU bios updater to inject it directly into a older stock bios while I wait for the official update
