Intel bug incoming? Meltdown and Spectre exploits

seems like theres a new bios for my g1 sniper z170 board that says fixes intel me security issues.

looks like gigabyte are on the ball anyway.

"Update Intel ME for security vulnerabilities"

Doubt there will be much of substance from the AIBs, etc. until after the 9th when they will get full information - even then I'll be surprised if there is much in the way of timely updates, etc.
It will vary a lot depending on the age of the hardware, the manufacturer and the market segment.
I have a Dell Latitude laptop which is their business class range and only released about a year ago and they were quick to respond to the last Intel security issue and expect the same again.

That is probably the management engine vulnerability from early 2017.

Various parties have been working on these issues for weeks now, and it was decided back in November to work to Jan 9th as the agreed coordinated disclosure date. I don't know if the motherboard manufacturers have been involved for a while or only very recently, but they don't usually seem to move that quickly.

dang oh well i just updated to that bios from my stock one with no problems so win either way lol i seen intel and vulnerbilities and put 2 and 2 together :p

so guys am i going to see a performance drop on my 6600k? sounds like a good time to finally overclock it, it has been on stock speeds for about 2 years now so i guess now is the time :)

El Reg published another article earlier today which gives a summary of Meltdown and Spectre, what's vulnerable and what measures are available to address them.

Given the potential for malicious Javascript to exploit Spectre, I'd strongly consider enabling your web browser's site isolation feature if using a Chromium-based browser - see how to do it at https://support.google.com/faqs/answer/7622138#chrome - I've seen side effects with IFRAMEs on one particular web site though. If using Firefox then upgrade to 57.0.4.

For anyone running Ubuntu, there is a notice published on what updates will be available.

If you're not running VMs or databases you're unlikely to notice the Meltdown patch performance hit.

Though I'm surprised you're hanging around here with a processor that's not overclocked in some way :p

hehe im just too poor to replace it if i screw it up lol had a athlon 64 2.2ghz at 2.75ghz for about 2 years then vista made it unstable when i switched from xp and had toyed with overclocking on some other chips, i had my last cpu for about 7 years a phenom 2 955 and it only sometimes had a mild overclock if i wanted to play a single threaded game like sins of a solar empire lol

reckon i should clock this 6600k one a bit, now that i have had it for a few years :)

thanks for the reassurance :)

Running Win10 are you ? then you won't have any choice. To be honest you would be a complete **** not to install it.

Is it possible to install this patch without first having to install the Creator's update? If not then I am screwed because that update pretty much makes my laptop unusable in games so I've been blocking Windows Updates in services for the time being...

What's this about then? Friend has an msi board for his i5-8400.

I've heard it said a lot. Personally, I'm on my 4th MSI board that I've updated the BIOS/UEFI on and never managed to brick one yet.

Never updated MSI, only Gigabye and Asus and never had problems. MSI isn't just pop it on a usb stick and runing the updater from bios?

Yep, it is. Very straightforward.

People are getting the update though? @TonyTurbo78 got the update last night. Next week is for Windows 7
