Intel bug incoming? Meltdown and Spectre exploits

Nice. So we will have millions of exploitable machines due to:

Lack of bios updates & people who can't or don't want to pay to replace perfectly good machines. Nice Intel :).
I really think motherboard manufacturers should have some kind of rule about supporting boards for a fixed period of time. If I know one manufacturer will issue security-related BIOS updates for 3 years and another for 5 years, I know which one I'd pick these days.

I wasn't very likely to buy an Intel system any time soon anyway but the number of security flaws found recently does make it even less likely. I wonder if there are any statistics on whether the sheer number of incompatible motherboards and chipsets Intel CPUs require impacts the length of time those motherboards receive BIOS updates for?

Gigabyte put out a BIOS update for the motherboard in my gaming PC on 1st Dec 2017 with the release note:

Code:
Update Intel ME for security vulnerabilities

Intel ME is Intel Management Engine

Hmmmmm
Yeah, still waiting for an ME fix for my Dell laptop. They originally had 02/01/2018 as the expected release date for it, now it's been pushed back to Februrary.

The media hype OMG 30% slowdown is going to be a boon for botnets.

The 30% figure is probably only going to apply to specific data centre type workloads, which is still a huge deal. Home users will almost certainly never notice a difference in performance; the security flaw aspect is far more important TBH.

There was a BIOS update for my Asus Sabertooth Z170s motherboard in November of last year. It was based on....

MEUpdateTool
Intel has identified security issue that could potentially place impacted platform at risk. Use ME Update tool to update your ME.
*We suggest you update ME Driver to the latest Version 11.7.0.1040 simultaneously.
Please download the file and check the MD5 code first.

.....didn't think much of it at the time of release. I assume that this issue is wha tAsus had addressed in november last yer...?

This issue doesn't relate to the ME vulnerabilities that were found last year. This is a fix for a completely different issue.

So Intel knew about this back in June last year and they still went ahead with the 7700k and 8700k, really pathetic Intel
Actually this behaviour might / should be seen to be a bit more than its being pathetic.

Intel continued selling CPUs for six months that they knew to be faulty / unfit for purpose - some people might suggest that this is fraudulent and criminal behaviour.

So far as I can see, there is no question but that the CEO should be investigated for "Insider trading".

I don't have any sensitive data on the machine and I don't habitually download viruses, no point slowing down the system just for the hell of it.
Is it connected to the internet? If so, I'm pretty sure passwords are sensitive data. This kind of craziness is part of the problem and is why Microsoft pushes so hard for users to update their machines even though it's "annoying".

Busy patching at work, nightmare having to do the platform hosts in terms of firmware/bios update then VMware patch then making sure guest OS's are updated
