Seen the update pop up this morning on my Windows 7 laptop, i'll be avoiding that lol.
I really think motherboard manufacturers should have some kind of rule about supporting boards for a fixed period of time. If I know one manufacturer will issue security-related BIOS updates for 3 years and another for 5 years, I know which one I'd pick these days.Nice. So we will have millions of exploitable machines due to:
Lack of bios updates & people who can't or don't want to pay to replace perfectly good machines. Nice Intel .
Yeah, still waiting for an ME fix for my Dell laptop. They originally had 02/01/2018 as the expected release date for it, now it's been pushed back to Februrary.Gigabyte put out a BIOS update for the motherboard in my gaming PC on 1st Dec 2017 with the release note:
Code:Update Intel ME for security vulnerabilities

Intel ME is Intel Management Engine

Hmmmmm
The media hype OMG 30% slowdown is going to be a boon for botnets.
So Intel knew about this back in June last year and they still went ahead with the 7700k and 8700k, really pathetic Intel

The bugs are O/S agnosticSecurity through obsolescence I say. AmigaOS FTW
There was a BIOS update for my Asus Sabertooth Z170s motherboard in November of last year. It was based on....
MEUpdateTool
Intel has identified security issue that could potentially place impacted platform at risk. Use ME Update tool to update your ME.
*We suggest you update ME Driver to the latest Version 11.7.0.1040 simultaneously.
Please download the file and check the MD5 code first.
.....didn't think much of it at the time of release. I assume that this issue is wha tAsus had addressed in november last yer...?
You want to be vulnerable to an attack that now the entire world knows how to do?Seen the update pop up this morning on my Windows 7 laptop, i'll be avoiding that lol.
This issue doesn't relate to the ME vulnerabilities that were found last year. This is a fix for a completely different issue.
Actually this behaviour might / should be seen to be a bit more than its being pathetic. So Intel knew about this back in June last year and they still went ahead with the 7700k and 8700k, really pathetic Intel
I don't have any sensitive data on the machine and I don't habitually download viruses, no point slowing down the system just for the hell of it.You want to be vulnerable to an attack that now the entire world knows how to do?

It's more like saying I live in the Sahara so I'm not wasting money on snow tyres. That really is like saying I never wear a seatbelt because I don't plan on crashing my car.
Is it connected to the internet? If so, I'm pretty sure passwords are sensitive data. This kind of craziness is part of the problem and is why Microsoft pushes so hard for users to update their machines even though it's "annoying".I don't have any sensitive data on the machine and I don't habitually download viruses, no point slowing down the system just for the hell of it.
