Intel Haswell Refresh Processors Codenamed Devil’s Canyon – Launching in Mid 2014 With Unlocked Desi

I'm a little confused...

All this talk about 'Devils Canyon' and Haswell refresh! Are they the same thing as in, haswell refresh is a refresh line of locked non k-series chips, whst devils canyon is the refresh k-series line, or are they entirely unrelated and devils canyon is an enthusiast seperate line of cpu's with better TIM and overclocking potential?

I'm with you on this, it's not been made clear which chips are Devil Canyon and which aren't. I guess like you say the refresh could just be the non K chips. Then the 'K' stuff in July could be Devils Canyon..

Should find out in May..

June 2nd, I can wait for.
Whats the difference between haswell refresh and devils canyon?

Devil's Canyon are unlocked chips, ""improved thermal interface and CPU packaging materials that are expected to enable significant enhancements to performance and overclocking capabilities"

Haswell Refresh is just a very small clock increase on locked chips. (No overclocking).

HW Refresh and Z97 motherboards in May, DC in June.

GIGABYTE G1.Gaming Z97 Motherboard Pictured

GIGABYTE is giving final touches to its next G1.Killer series motherboard, the G1.Gaming Z97. Branded in an uncanny way to MSI's Gaming series, the G1.Gaming is a mid-range ($150 - $200) socket LGA1150 motherboard based on Intel's Z97 Express chipset, which can run Core "Haswell" Refresh processors out of the box. The board features most of the stuff you've come to expect from "gaming" grade motherboards. To begin with, its draws power from a combination of 24-pin ATX and 8-pin EPS power connectors, and uses an 8-phase VRM to condition power to the CPU. The CPU is wired to four DDR3 DIMM slots, supporting up to 64 GB of dual-channel DDR3 memory; and two PCI-Express 3.0 x16 slots (electrical x8/x8 when both are populated). Three PCI-Express 2.0 x1, and two legacy PCI make for the rest of its expansion area.

I don't even think they're cheaping out, I think they do it to purposefully limit overclockability due to plans to release newer chips with only a small increase in speed.

Obviously... That's why they have cheaped out on the previous gens. To limit the overclock..

Now Intel's attitude has changed toward the mainstream, even allowing upcoming Pentium chips to overclock and repurposed the Haswell chips for overclocking, including improved TIM.

These are going to be very nice for overclocking.

Gonna pick up a Gigabyte Z97 and Xeon 1231v3. The Xeon will be a stop gap until 4790K drops in June/July. Then I'll switch over to that and give the Xeon 1231v3 to my boys. That should keep their PC going strong for a few more years yet.

Got to ask why you are getting a Xeon and a 4790K?

Nice board but I'm not sure the M2 sockets justify me changing my ROG Hero.

Getting the Xeon to use until the 4790K comes out later on. Then the Xeon will go in my boys PC (their using Pentium dual core atm) so nice upgrade for them. They don't overclock, just want em to have stable PC so the Xeon will be spot on. Basically get i7 performance for i5 price.

Than I'll get the 4790K for my main PC. Hopefully get a decent stable OC from it. I really like that black edition Gigabyte UD5. Def getting that one.

Interesting, wonder if that means that it will have a better OC'ing potential. Suggests that the 4790K could run quite a bit cooler than the 4770K too (although mine runs 24C idle and <50C load anyway :D).

Intel have stated that these have been re-designed for overclocking. So safe to assume they will do better than the older Haswell chips.

Looking forward to trying Z97 / 4790K. Even @ stock if limited to 4Ghz, this thing will be a monster. If cores can turbo over 4Ghz with single core upto 4.4Ghz, this chip really could be a beast.

Got about 4 weeks to wait for 4790K..

the ud5h is a nice board though,i see they have much newer realtek sound chip alc1150 besides other third party soundchips across giga boards

I bet intel wont make the same boo boo with b85/h87/81 ocing

Agreed GA-Z97X-UD5H-BK looks really good imho. Looking forward to putting this thing together. Just a shame we gotta wait another 4 weeks for the 4790K's..

Features of the mobo.

Dual Bios.

M.2 PCIE port for NGFF SSD.

Supports the current 4th gen Haswell processor and the upcoming Haswell Refresh, Devil’s Canyon, as well as the 5th Gen Broadwell processors.

10K Durable Black™ Soild Caps.

2x SATA Express ports, 4x SATA 6Gbps ports.

3x PCIE 3.0 x16 slots, 2x PCIE 3.0 x1 slots, and 2x legacy PCI slots.

Realtek ALC1150 115dB SNR HD Audio with built-in rear audio amplifier.

Power Failure Protection with Anti-Surge IC.

*Fap fap fap* :D

Intel "Devil's Canyon" to Usher in 5 GHz-on-air Overclocking Era

Even as Intel launched its first Core "Haswell" Refresh socket LGA1150 chips, it left out two enthusiast-grade parts from the mix, the Core i7-4790K and the Core i5-4690K. Don't be misled into thinking that they're just multiplier-unlocked variants of the i7-4790 and i5-4690 launched today. There's a reason the two have be designated a separate internal codename altogether. Called "Devil's Canyon," the chips are made from high-performing dies binned out from the foundry, and placed on extra-durable packages with contact points that are designed for higher voltages, and a superior thermal interface material between the die and the integrated heatspreader (IHS).

Better packaging (mind the pun) isn't the only thing that sets the i7-4790K and the i5-4690K apart form their non-K counterparts, they're are also clocked higher. The i7-4790K ships with an out of the box clock speed of 4.00 GHz (the first Intel processor to do so), with a Turbo Boost frequency of 4.40 GHz. The Core i5-4670K, on the other hand, ships with a clock speed of 3.50 GHz, with Turbo Boost frequency of 3.90 GHz. The TDP of both chips is rated at 88 Watts, a wee bit higher than the 84 Watts the non-K chips are rated at. Expreview believes that the two could usher in a new era in CPU overclocking without breaking the bank over HEDT chips, and could be capable of running at clock speeds of 5.00 GHz, on air-cooling. Intel is expected to launch the two chips to crowds at Computex 2014, followed by a market release in mid-June.

Wait a minute :S

When did a new flagship CPU with decent TIM and a clock speed slightly higher than the flagships of the last two generations become seen as something special instead of just, normal?

CURSE YOU INTEL!!!

I dunno mate the 4770K was already a beast, beating the old 3960X (£700+) in a lot of tasks and faster in gaming all while using less power.

For a refresh, the 4790K re-designed for cooler running, higher overclocks and 4.0Ghz - 4.4Ghz turbo seems like a sweet deal to me. Anyone buying this year will be very happy at this over a normal 4770K.

Broadwell is coming relatively soon as well Q4 2014/Q1 2015. Tbh Intel needn't have done anything in the interim, it's not as if AMD are competing with them... I say fair play to Intel, this looks like a nice chip..

Intel Devil's Canyon CPUs Confirmed, Reach 4.4 GHz

With the Haswell refresh line of central processing units from Intel mostly out, only the unlocked chips are left, the ones that are supposed to debut in the summer. The two main stars of that line are called Intel Core i7-4790K and Intel Core i5-4690K.

Lots of things are being set up for this summer, and this processor series will make a fine pair, so to speak, with the next high-end video card from Advanced Micro Devices.
