Intel Haswell Refresh Processors Codenamed Devil’s Canyon – Launching in Mid 2014 With Unlocked Desi

For those who held off Ivybridge / 1st Haswell chips and building this year Z97 / 4790K is a nice bonus. Intel could have just launched nothing until Broadwell. At least they are trying to generate some interest in the market.

I'm gonna take a break from high end until next year, wait for Haswell -E and Broadwell to appear before spending anymore money. Got to many games to play on the consoles so I think it's a good time to take a break. Won't get stung in the new 28nm milking cards that way either lol.

Anyone want a pair of GTX 780 Ti's? :p

My build next year,

GA-Z97X-UD5H-BK
i7 5770K Broadwell 14nm
32GB DDR4
Nvidia GTX 880 or 880Ti (Whichever is 20nm)

wont you need a new mb for ddr4?:p think its different slot cutouts on the ram

First 14nm Broadwell will be on Z97, Broadwell in Q4 2014 /Q1 2015.
Skylake brings DDR4 to the mainstream lineup later on..

I def want the Gigabyte Z97X UD5H Black Edition, can use same DDR3 then as well. 14nm Broadwell should be really good. Especially as it'll have to top Devil's Canyon chips (4.4Ghz)

I'm gonna hold out until then..

im tempted also, the asus gene is calling my name but my current sandy and ivy do everything I want,it would be purely for the smell of new components

Ha, that's what usually gets me. I'm just gonna hold out. Mostly game on PS4 these days so I can wait until next year.. (I hope) lol.

I'll come back to high end for 20nm GPU / 14nm CPU and the Witcher 3 :p

I had to pay £300-400 for decent AMD CPU's back in the day.

Back in the day they might have been worth it (;

AMD just can't price their products high because performance is so weak in comparison to Intel. Remember when the FX 9370 launched at like £700+. What a bad joke that was, so much for AMD giving best bang for buck lol. The market dictates the price, what people are willing to pay. Clearly nobody thought it was worth it and now they are priced sub £200..

Like you said Intel offer I7's for a lil over £200 which are a bargain in relation to their performance. The 4790K looks well worth a circa £250 price. Anyone building this year is getting a good deal imho. At least Intel brought something to the table..

Prices are actually pretty good tbh. Consider just how much performance you get from the mainstream 3770K > 4770K > 4790K etc. For a couple hundred notes it's decent, especially considering AMD really don't have anything anywhere near competitive. The Extreme range just isn't needed for gaming, more geared towards a work station environment, or E-Peen :p

If the 4690K lands at 180, that's not more expensive than the 4670K, as the 4670K was pushing 191 at launch.

Agreed, if the heat (TIM) issues and overclocking are better on these chips £180 for the 4670K and £250 for the 4790K would be a fair price imho.

Saw the ASUS Maximus Ranger Z97 review, first time I've been tempted to switch from Gigabyte in a long time. That Ranger board is awesome for the price..

Must resist..

A respected source I trust tells me they have tested 4690K with poor results. We have our 4690K and 4790K samples next week so I will try then but I am not holding my breath.

Disappointing, least we know not to expect to much though. Still like the look of the Z97 motherboards. If Devil's Canyon isn't that great hopefully at least Z97 is compatible with Broadwell 14nm..

Nordic Hardware say June might just be paper launch..

Paper Launch of Devil's Canyon - Intel's new overclocking processors may take until September

After the launch of Intel's finputsade Haswell processors awaits enthusiasts worldwide launch of Devil's Canyon, processors promised to put overclocking in the main room again. But according to sources at Nordic Hardware will be just a paper launch in the summer - the dealers, no processors before the end of September.

Nordic Hardware usually pretty good with info but I hope this paper launch thing is wrong though, I've gone with 4770K + Gigabyte GA-Z97X-UD5H.

Was gonna switch to 4790K in June/July and give 4770K to my boys..

Oh well if it is paper launch, boys will have to wait longer for their quad core :p

ARE YOU KIDDING ME!? Noooooooooooo. Was building a new system with 4790k? I have most of the components was just waiting for 4790k and z97 mobo. God damn it if this is true:mad::mad::mad::mad:

Hopefully it's not true. Paper only launch in June would suck. PR disaster for Intel, especially as 4790K was supposed to be something for the enthusiasts to show Intel were still aware of the market lol.

I hope it's not true. I will not wait. Why would intel do this now right before launch? Are you going to wait Boom or use 4770k or wait until September?

If I have to wait until september I'll not get Devil's Canyon and wait that extra month or so for broadwell instead.

Makes no difference to me mate because I'm giving the 4770K to my boys anyway. I'll use the 4770K up until 4790K gets released.

I am hoping this is just rumor, paper launch would suck. Better no launch at all until it's ready to go over a paper launch imho.

You could just use a cheap Haswell dual core in the meantime? Sell it after you're done with it..

There is some hope?

American prices showing up for 4790K.

Baseclock listed as 4.1Ghz

Core i7-4790k fc-lga12c 4.1ghz

$386.95 = £229.46 + 20% = £275.00

Hopefully closer to £250 due to early hike up in USA..

At risk of derailing the thread - with a 290X (as cwgk91 has), a 5 GHz+ 8350 (as cwgk91 has) is probably going to be indistinguishable from any Intel based machine at anything like playable resolutions and quality settings (1080P+, high+ settings), except maybe in some very poorly threading games. I would definitely not bother making that switch.

Calling it a "massive" upgrade is nonsense.

A 4770K will provide a massive FPS boost with a 290X, min and max will benefit massively. A FX 8350 is a bottleneck. Even at 5Ghz, power hungry and slow. The 4770K is a massive upgrade in terms of performance, power use and platform. To say otherwise is nonsense :p

Sweeping generalisation as usual Boom. Many of us have proven that with a single 780/780ti, 290/290x even in poorly threaded games/benches, the difference is minimal if running a 4.8/5GHz FX 83x0 CPU. Joey's point is valid. For 2 x cards of that power, I'd agree re: the bottleneck issue.

Please don't lead people to waste their money.

Or maybe coming from someone who actually uses all this stuff..

4770K is the best gaming CPU, the best performance per watt..

It's a massive upgrade from the AMD stuff. The OP who mentioned it wants a change from AMD. The 4770K would be a massive upgrade. Nothing wrong with telling him that. The weird guys here that love AMD don't see past the brand name..

You guys are to touchy :D, AMD have admitted defeat with current FX, and are moving away from it. There really is no need for you guys to keep defending it at this point. Blind brand loyalty just makes people buy inferior products.. I think you're the one leading people to waste money on a dead platform with power hungry slow CPU's.. Oh well

4770K and Z97 makes sense, much better CPU, future upgrade options. Hopefully the OP won't listen to the AMD fanboys, and go with common sense on this one.

I'm sorry but you would not find me paring an GPU the calibre of a 290x or 780ti with current AMD CPUs. I would want the maximum performance available in every gaming scenario, and that would be with an Intel CPU.

Exactly mate. 290X needs a decent CPU to pair with to get the most from. Lol at him calling me an Intel fanboy. I've been rooting for the underdog for years, they just haven't put out anything in the CPU space worth bothering with.

I buy based on what's best value VS performance at the time, or flat out best performance. Atm the it's Intel..

Ok so is 4790k still coming in early June?

No one knows for certain yet, rumors spreading around of delay until September. Will suck if true..
