Intel Haswell Refresh Processors Codenamed Devil’s Canyon – Launching in Mid 2014 With Unlocked Desi

for the price they will go even tim is improved not sure if worth it, mine 2600k that i payed 160£ couple years ago still strong, and all api and dx changes making less bottleneck in future, might as well wait for ddr4 for full upgrade.

Yeah this is a good point. Must admit although I'm really tempted by Haswell -E. With the premium for things like DDR4 and new Mobo's / CPU's plus with Direct X / Mantle working for lower CPU overhead. Thinking I might just stick with my current setup and just grab a 20nm GPU when they appear. If DirectX does it's job well would many of us on fairly capable setups even need a new CPU?

Obviously for benching more power is always better but just for regular gaming any decent Intel CPU from past few years with a decent GPU might be ok for a long while.

If I had the will power could potentially hold out for Skylake / Skylake -E. That would be a beast of an upgrade.. DDR4 prices would be much lower by then..

Be interesting to see how long I can hold out for by the time Haswell -E launches :p

A lot of people seem to be going on about x99. How does it compare (as far as we know) to Skylake which is what I am currently waiting on?

Skylake will be the next architecture change on 14nm. Broadwell 14nm is the die shrink of Haswell, Skylake is new arch built on 14nm. Mainstream chips will come first, with first DDR4 support for mainstream Intel chips. Some say Skylake could still be limited to quad core, whereas Haswell -E has up to 8 cores, Skylake -E possibly more..

Haswell -E X99 (DDR4 support) (Up to 8 cores) Q2/Q3 2014
Haswell Refresh (DDR3 support) (Quad cores) Q2 2014
Broadwell (DDR3 support) (Quad cores) Q4 2014???
Skylake (DDR4 support) (Possibly still only quad core) 2015???

I was just about to order my new upgrade parts next week (4670K + Z87X UD3H).

I'm coming from a Q6600 based machine. This upgraded CPU + MOBO combo would cost me about £290.

Now should I wait for the refresh? What would it offer for the about same price?

I'll be using it for general PC use and Photoshop, not really a gamer.

Man I was all ready to hit buy too :D

EDIT - after doing some quick reading, the update looks to only help the hardcore overclockers. At the price I'm paying my choice of combo should be fine I think.

For your usage, I'd just go with your original plan (imo) :)

A short update, the Haswell Refresh ‘K’ Series will indeed be supported on the Intel 9 Series Motherboards, these slides were leaked by Hermitage Akihabra, a well known leak source. According to the slides, the Haswell Refresh K-Series processors would be specifically targeted for compatibility with the 9-Series chipset while the rest of the Haswell Refresh lineup would be compatible with both 8-Series and 9-Series chipsets.

Thanks Intel, but no thanks.

This is not be Intel's standard operating procedure to release a "new' processor and NOT require a new chipset is it?, all reviews ive read says there is no performance increase between 8 and 9 series boards, so if that link above is true, I wont be moving to Haswell refresh K series CPU's, they can stick them where the sun doesn't shine, its just a money making scam to pretty much force enthusiasts to buy there new chipset and boards.

Pfft i love my Gigabyte OC board too much to let it go. Hell, ill just replace the TIM myself :p

If i break teh chip, itl still be cheaper to replace than moving, especially considering my board is watercooled too.

Its nice improvements and fixes, however its arriving june/july time frame?

Waiting 3-4 months is a bit of a long wait and far worse is 4-5 months after DDR4 motherboards and more.

Well my hero aint going no where, Intel can stick their improved tim.

I think when people realize the newest CPU will require a new board, those who have already upgraded to Z87 wont bother, that's a lot of drops in sales, and if its just a case that Haswell-Refresh standard, non K series will work on Z87 but the K series wont, but works the other way around, ie our chips that we have now will work on Z97, then they are just simply keeping the microcode to themselves, a simply further bios update would give us the support, they're just not letting it go in order to promote and get more sales of the 9 series chipset.

Sounds like Intel are just getting Greedy, they should have left the ball in our court and stuck with X99 for there money making.

Upgrading in a month or 2. I might just go for the refreash i7-4790K. I can't wait for x99 and ddr4, but tbh I don't think ddr4 is going to be a huge leap any ways. Just a reason to sell over priced RAM. I'll go refreash and upgrade in a few years to what ever is new in a few years time. I doubt we'll see many games using more then 4 cores. .... when x99 releases everything for the chipset with be wayyyyy overpriced. Don't be a sucker and buy into the x99 hype. Wait a year or two...just my opinion
