Intel Haswell Refresh Processors Codenamed Devil’s Canyon – Launching in Mid 2014 With Unlocked Desi

Think I might just find a Xeon E3 1230 V2 or a Core i7 3770 at some point, and do a proper rebuild in late 2015 or 2016,or just see how far I can push my current CPU.

Had my current setup since early 2011 so far.

Edit!!

I might just sidetracked by a low profile APU based build at some point(might be even Intel if they introduce L4 cache to lower end parts) though, so as to replace my picoPSU powered secondary build!! :p

Im not sure everyone is going to do 5GHz, I see that most are ES samples, but its an awful lot of 4.7-4.8GHz results being shown around the net.

As soon as that Intel unleash the beast contest was shown where the experts were only doing 5-5.4Ghz with tricks and stuff to super cool the air I knew it was "oh dear".

Yeah,it does not seem much of a refresh in some ways. Seems more of a typical clockspeed bump on a more mature process node, hyped up quite a bit. There seems to be a lot of this hype going on from both Intel and AMD ATM.

Q6600 B3 to Q6600 G0- now there was a refresh! Lower TDP,lower power consumption and better overclocking headroom.

OTH,far less fanfare too IIRC.

they can do it x99 tells you

just wish they would also give the mainstream users better performance

They won't since they want higher performance seeking enthusiasts to get onto X99 which makes them more money. The X99 platform only exists due to the Intel server platforms. These are all about performance in a reasonable power envelope.

The problem is if microservers take off, even this is under threat - Intel has even made an 8 core Atom,ie,the Atom C2700 which has no IGP and is for server usage.

The mainstream sockets are the same CPUs found in laptops,so power consumption, maintaining clockspeeds at lower voltages, improved idle power consumption and improved graphics are more important to them.

After look at how much of a Core i7 die is actually the CPU and caches??

They could probably sell you a six core CPU for less than a Core i7 quad core,if it had no IGP,since it would probably be a smaller chip.

Looks like this is building up to an epic fail - a lot of hoo haa about a very ordinary product. Think I will stick to my current chip and wait for X99.

It's the best LGAxxxx part since Sandy Bridge imo, there can't be anything worse than getting a 3770K/4770K that clocks like a donkey and runs at over 90C.

This chip looks to guarantee a good overclock and temps are meant to be lower (albeit still not as good as SB was), only those who already invested in IB/HW will be disappointed by it.

Agreed, I built a Z97 PC thinking 4790K would be decent and I would give my 4770K to the boys. Reviews so far the 4790K isn't worth it..

Thinking Broadwell 14nm mainstream chips will likely be the same, poor TIM and limited overclocking without de-lidding.

Now I'm thinking I'll just wait for X99 and grab a 5820K. Gives my boys this PC and start a new build. Then can upgrade to Broadwell -E later on and no worries about crappy TIM or IGPU that I do not want..

Maybe this is Intel's plan to get people to move up to high end.. Lol, they got me.

was on Bloomfield x58 before sb came out, wasn't worth the upgrade. Eventually went to intels first gimped chip, ivybridge. Faster yes but despite being a k chip, no good for overclocking, haswell is just a refresh of theese gimped chips. Deliberately held back by Intel to force enthusiasts onto x99 etc.

+1, just about sums it up I think - seems like they got me too. Lol
