tbh i've always been of the belief that temps in IBT or Prime don't really count as your system isn't sitting there running that 24/7

My 4770k at 4.5Ghz runs in the 60s while BF4 gaming and that was with two 7990s in the loop too so not too bad.

In theory I should be happy but I want more. I simply cannot push this 4770k because a) it's not a great clocker as it needs high-ish volts for 4.5GHz and b) I have an itch to scratch with the new stuff

I am not sure why people are wasting so much money on a slight upgrade if you already have a Core i5 4670K or Core i7 4770K?? Even if you get 10% higher clockspeeds with a Z97 motherboard and the new chips,surely Broadwell or Skylake would be bigger bumps??

Because if you have a naff 4770k what have you got to loose?

Ok you might get a naff 4790k too but at least it will run cooler due to the better TIM. That might even help the naff 4790ks get better clocks as you could increase the voltage further.

I'm upgrading because I currently have a i5 4670 (non K) so Im upgrading to the 4790K plus Ive just gone crossfire again. Hopefully I will see a boost even at stock speeds.

I can do 4.4 ghz on my 3770k without voltage increase. I'm hoping I can do same with 4790k 4.6 or 4.7 without volts. I would be very happy with that

My 4770k can't go past 4.1 without 90+degrees temps and blue screens under a H100 so a chip with a 4ghz base is gonna do a lot better,

Plus my motherboard supports it so I can sell my 4770k once I have the 4790k installed and get roughly 2/3rds of the cost back.

So I'm upgrading my chip at a maximum cost of 80 or 90 quid, probably less.
I'm willing to take that loss for the improvement it should give.

This is the thing though,Intel probably could have made the original Haswell K series chips overclock better like DC at launch. The 22NM process was mature by then and they still used the same TIM as IB- I think this a targetted money grab,and they probably held back on the Haswell,knowing they could refresh it and get twice the sales from the enthusiast crowd.

Honestly,even a 20% clockspeed improvement seems a bit meh,especially with the fact that the newer engines,DX12 and Mantle will thread better and utilise even an older CPU better. You are more likely to be limited by your graphics cards at that point,and even a 20% improvement in clockspeed won't always mean an instant 20% improvement in minimums let alone a significant improvement in frametimes that you can feel.

This is assuming you get a golden Core i7 4790K or Core i7 4690K,that can hit like nearly 5GHZ OFC and a dog of a "1st generation" Haswell K series CPU.

Depends.

I will be running trifire but don't have the funds to spend hundreds on a 2011 setup. The 4770k was the only real path I could take so every little bit extra I get is going to help.

People are able to push their 4770k after delidding them which is something I was going to do only if the 4790k didn't work on z87 motherboards.

The fact it does gives me a better option, why delid a 4770k when the 4790k comes with that fix as standard?

Yes I could stick with this and see how I get on until Broadwell or Skylake come out but at the sake of what, £40-50 it's a decent choice IMO.

But as i've said before, i'm waiting till 'normal' people get their hands on the 4790k before I decide what to do.

Giving my 4770K to my boys at some point anyway so don't lose anything.

Well I've decided to pre order a 4790k. I figured that even in a worst case scenario and they don't over clock very well it would still be a decent upgrade over my current system.

Apology's if this has been asked a few times but,

Is it worth upgrading from a [email protected] yet?, just seen this new release and some games that I play (guild wars 2) are more cpu demanding than gpu. The 2500k wouldn't go to waste for another computer but don't want to splash money if I wont see much performance gains. Thanks.

Off top my head only Guild Wars 2 but that game is very poorly optimized and needs single core grunt. I guess I'm just asking in general for gaming across the board would there be any impressive gains to make it worth it?.

It would be slightly faster clock per clock so for example, a 4790k at 4.5GHz would be as quick as your 2500k at 4.8GHz (thats a rough guide)

In theory if you could clock it the same to 4.8GHz then yes it would be quicker however would you notice it? I'm not so sure

I would have thought the 2500k being a bit dated now, if the the performance for gaming is only minor then I guess I be better off waiting til x-mas and seeing what going on then, Thanks anyway.

I would think the 4790k would be a lot faster then your 2500k? tbh mate if you really want a big upgrade I would wait for Broadwell. Just hold out a little longer for Broadwell near the end of the year.

Yeah agree also the i7 4790k will defo have ground over a 2500k. Even at 4.5ghz for me in most areas. But you.ll need a board too , so it depends is it worth the £350 price upgrade ?? To you.
