***Intel i7 4790K Owners thread***

It's not worth buying a new board and CPU if you can grab a used 2600k/2700k or 3770k and use that in place of the 2500.

I'll get a used 3770, worked out I can save a good 150 doing that!

What do you recommend for a modular psu? I've had mine a good long while, but it's a coolermaster and I'd rather get a good quality one especially if I'm investing into a 3770k and a 970. Also, that I'm awful at cable management so modular would be a blessing.

Still a great chip and will last a while yet :).

I'd recommend a Super Flower PSU or even one built by them if you can find it cheaper (EVGA SuperNova, NZXT Hale and probably others).

Cooler Master PSUs are not bad, unless it's an old cheap one... But even cheap PSUs from the likes of Corsair etc are not that great. My old PC has been running from a 600W Cooler Master Silent Pro Gold for about 3 years now and has never skipped a beat! It wasn't a cheap PSU to begin with though. My girlfriend now has that PC (currently an i7 3770k with 8GB Avexir DDR3 1600 RAM & Gigabyte R9 280X).

If it was solely for gaming purposes, my current cpu would suffice but wanting to move to an i7 for my projects. Think i'll buy the cpu and psu first so it gives me chance to dust off inside my case, then i'll grab a 970 and sell my 670, maybe that money can start to go towards a 1440p screen!

Cheers for the help :p

Just clicked the buy button on an ASUS Ranger and i7 4790K - heard some horror stories with the stock cooler and wondered whether an Arctic Freezer 13 would suffice? I've previously used the the AC 7 coolers exclusive as they are simple to install and not too large. I don't intend to OC - just don't want the proc to get too toastie.

Many thanks

Baldrick

The Arctic Freezer 13 will be fine for cooling a stock 4790k. Even the old Freezer 7 Pro is better than the stock Intel cooler

Thanks PowerPie, much appreciated.

I have one further question before I start my build, the AF 13 turns up tomorrow - when sandy bridge first arrived there were concerns about ram above 1.5v causing CPU degradation - is that equally as concerning for the Haswell Devil Canyon CPU's ? It's just I got some vengeance pro 2400 that needs 1.65v, not that I intend to run them at 2400...

Many thanks

Guys I just tried what a difference HyperThreading can make as well as overclocking the cpu in Crysis 3 :)

Stunning outcome..

System used:
i7 4790k@stock and @5100MHz
2x8GB Corsair Dom Plat(Painted red :D) 2400CL10
MSI 295X2@1150/1500MHz
Asus M7 Hero
Crysis 3@Max Settings

4.4GHz HT-OFF = 65fps (cores at 99%)
4400_MHz_HT_off.jpg

4.4GHz HT-ON = 82fps (cores at about 85%)

5.1GHz HT-OFF = 79fps (cores at 99%)

What res mate ?

Actually screw it, bought a new 4790k for £239. Decided against 3770k as my current motherboard doesn't overclock, any recommendations on motherboards under £100?

I, not so long ago, bought 2x Asus Z97 Pro Gamers for me and my Dad. Was £105 and and seems feature rich, lots of spaces and slots- fits a Noctua DH15 no problem too!

I owned an L3 2013 manufactured chip and my current 2014 L4 in sig. Both clocked similarly. Seen chips from both years that clock very high on lowish volts. But the best I've seen on here lately are X series Vietnam produced ones.

Mine's an X4 batch chip from Vietnam and it does clock with pretty low voltages.
