***Intel i7 4790K Owners thread***

Interesting info guys , do you think it's got something to do with z87 boards using DC ?
As you mentioned 4ghz seems much better cache, 4.4ghz would cause more heat indeed. :D
Not sure about the mobo making a difference. Lower cache does help a bit with temps though. In the process of messing about with a 4.7ghz oc. Stock cache, 1.25 vcore, 1.248 idle, 1.264 @load. 2400mhz ram.

Just a quick run on cb15, ill give it a try with a few more demanding things such as XTU or real bench. For stressing normal tasks will do me due to high temps.

Knew you could achieve it setter , sure 4.8ghz could be for benching too :D

What I meant about the z87 boards , is that to enable DC compatibility they released a new bios. You mention it put ring/cache at 4.4ghz, while I'd say stock would probably be 4ghz, same as base core, like 4770 @ 3.9ghz etc.
Just wondered if z97 4790k users had any of their stock cache running at 4.4ghz ? As you also mentioned the newer bios update lowered your cache to 4ghz as would be expected at stock. ;)

The first asus DC bios ver 1504 did leave cache pretty high at 4400. The latest 1505 drops it to 4000. Hopefully a few Z97 owners can say wether this happened for them.

The above settings bsod'd part way through XTU, so a few notches on vcore and it passed.

Temps seem a bit high again though still well within limits, fans at 2350 rpm.

Got yourself a better chip then Settler :)
Came home today to find my lovely one sitting there waiting :D Slapped it in the Gene7 ready for the weekend.
Not too bad mate, hot yes but clocks higher on much lower voltage. If i can get it running stable at 4.7 it will do me grand. Could be a good candidate for delidding.:D

Hopefully your oem one is an improvement on your first chip.:)

Well after hearing mention of a new BIOS I just checked ASUS site and there is version 1505 for the HERO VI.
Dated today so it is fresh off the press.
BIOS notes just say
Improve system Performance.

setter
could you rerun CB15 with the cache set a bit higher ? 4.4 perhaps
your score is a bit down on what I am seeing at 4.7
getting 958 with the cache at 4.4.
No fast ram just 2400 cas 11 at xmp

Will do, the new bios downclocks cache to 4ghz. My ram kit is the c10 2400mhz set. Incidentally, looking at cache voltage in bios, it was set to auto but showing as 1.27 in the left pane next to auto. Thought this seemed a bit high?

Cache bumped to 4400. Bit of an improvement.

@retro, not too bad tbh. Id be happier if it ran a bit cooler, as even running 3dm skydiver, im seeing temps upto 71c with fans maxed. Ill primarily be gaming on this setup and the problem with the 4770k was high temps when playing. Then a lot of noise as i had to run the fans so high.

At load it gets to 1.264v, thats what i was getting on the 4770k at load when i first got it at 4.5ghz. Couple of bios updates later and that chip needed 1.271v at 4.5, loading at 1.296.

Paste job must be a shoddy one tbh, though from what ive read on oc.net. The L4 batch chips are consistently running cooler and clocking better.

bios 1505 sets the cache to 40x instead of 44 that 1504 set.
auto core voltage is much higher.

At 4.7 it is settting 1.376v under load
My chip is a bit rubbish but it doesn't need that much for 4.7
