*** Internet Explorer 9 Final Released ***

IE9 really is great, especially for us developers. Integration in to VS JS debugging + F12 for improved web developer tools.

Thinking of switching to it from Chrome (shock horror, never thought I would hear myself say I would use a MS browser again)

FF4 is a laggy pile of poop, unfortunately. Eats ram when its idling and slow when lots of tabs open.

IE9 is a step in the right direction for MS.

Gracias!

EDIT: I'm a bit behind on this since I use Chrome mostly but does this mean as more browsers become HTML5 ready, Silverlight and Flash and plugins will start to be phased out? Doesn't HTML5 do everything they do?

Yes/no. Yes, it does everything - better. No, MS already gave up on Silverlight a while back as in it died already.

What do you guys make of...
Nothing too odd there. If you select Windows 7 x64 you get both the 64bit and 32 bit versions of IE installed. So far although pretty similar, only the 32bit version has the new optimised engine behind it so unless you have a reason for 64bit browsing (and frankly I can't think of a single reason to need an x64 native version) just run the 32bit IE9.

Both are installed by defailt into "programs" on the start menu with the x64 clearly marked as such.

Hi

Does anyone know how to successfully move the Menu bar in IE9 above the Navigation bar because the past registry trick etc no longer seem to work anymore for the RTM version?

It seem i`m not the only one that has noticed the registry trick etc don`t seem to work anymore to move the Menu bar.

Thanks so much for responding.

The good:

Much cleaner interface.
Much faster JS engine.
Fast rendering.
Reasonable HTML5 support.
Finally a download manager and no modal dialogs.
Nice search integration in the URL bar.

The bad:

Some truly baffling UI choices. Tabs and URL bar crammed onto one row despite acres of space above; option to move tabs below, but not above. Home button in ridiculous place. Status bar left untouched by default. Minimal UI customisation.

JS still slow compared to competitors (Chrome, Firefox much faster in V8).
HTML5 support patchy compared to competitors.
Limited extensions.

I love it, so much slicker than any other browser.

In which way is it slicker than Chrome? It's a massive improvement over IE8, but I really can't see any reason to use it instead of Chrome.

The best thing about IE9 is that in a few years, we'll finally have a standards-compliant default browser on Windows.
