iPad Mini...

Just been playing with a nexus 7 in work and yep it does feel pretty damn cheap compared to any of the apple products.

How does it feel cheap? I've also had a look at the nexus and my initial thoughts are that it felt pretty solid. It certainly didn't feel cheap let alone "pretty damn cheap" as you put it.

The screen isn't great either, it's PPI isn't that much over the mini and being 16:9 it's fine for movies but not as good for anything else. Comparing a webpage on the nexus to ipad it's like about 200px of height has been lopped off.

The nexus PPI of 216 is considerably better than the minis 163.

I think someone needs to take their white tinted glasses off ;)

I've owned a Nexus 7 too - and I agree - it does feel cheap

but the screen is ok, and its very powerful for the money - its still a bargain

I sold mine as SQ I thought was very poor (headphone out) - but you can now connect an external DAC and amp which would improve things no end

hah just reporting on what I've observed with all of them in front of me. When you see them all together the differences become pretty obvious. The nexus 7 screen is just washed out looking and doesn't really look all that sharp, maybe it's just the way android renders text compared to MS's cleartype 2 and whatever apple use on ios.

We also compared some photos on the nexus, ipad 3 and a color calibrated pc monitor. The nexus was simply missing subtle color gradients and again the photos looked flat and washed out. Can't really say any more than that really.

Looking at the build quality the nexus has some niggles, I guess not major issues but it's simply no-where near as refined as the mini or ipad 3. There's gaps around the usb socket, the socket feels pretty flimsy, the screen hardly needs any pressure to show up the weird lcd color issues, the bezel has marks at each color from how it's been formed, the bezel has gaps between the screen and back joins and it feels much heavier than it should for the size. It's like comparing a ford focus to a luxury spec car.

Then we looked at performance, the nexus just has these weird jutters and pauses, no idea why as it shouldn't be doing it. Also the touch interactive experience is just not there. I mean apple have bought companies just to get their touch tech and it shows. In ios when you touch it accelerates and de-accelerates the screen really naturally and smoothly but the nexus never really does this. When you get to the bottom of say a page it just stops dead instead of having that nice little bounce. The devils in the details.

I currently have a iPad3. I played with a iPad Mini at the Apple Store today, the size and weight of it is amazing however the screen does let it down, it hurts my eyes after a while, if they make the screen higher DPI next year I will no doubt get one! :)

In stock at the minute on argos's website with free delivery in case anyone is after one and doesnt want to wait two weeks from apple.

Had a play with the mini and revised ipad 3 yesterday. The mini is a really well made piece of kit but the screen is just poor compared to the ipad 3, no way could I spend that much money on old screen tech. Its not just the res but colour, contrast and reflectiveness all seemed much worse as well. It was the same comparing the Air and normal MBP to the new MBP retinas, the air's screen just looked flat and lifeless like several generations behind.

Maybe when the mini retina comes out it'll be the most complete tablet so far.

It does make me wonder if the iPad2 has a better screen!

iPad mini my view ;-)

Hi all

Just a few words IMHO cool piece of kit with usual Apple production values. I have a play book, nexus 7 (which is going on flea bay later) and step daughter has IPad 3 with retina, this more than holster it's own and is worth the price difference, go have a play with one !

Cheers

All the talk of not retina etc just puts people off who haven't even seen a retina display.
I say go and try one for yourself and see what you think. If you're coming from an ipad 1st or 2nd gen for example the sharpness and colour is much better on the mini display. I don't have any issues reading text on web pages either.

People go on and on complaining about it not having a retina display even though they are perhaps sitting behind a monitor at say 24" 1920x1080 and a PPI of only 92.
What do you look at more webpages on, your PC or a tablet?

I understand the annoyance of apple not including a higher quality display for the price but there is no need to slate the tablet for it.
In geek bench scores its comparable to the ipad3 as well so it is no slouch. It's lovely to hold, made very well and I'm really happy with it.
I am no apple fan boy either, I use windows computers and have an android phone.

I'm interested in buying one and almost took the plunge but the next version with Retina display will be out next year so probably worth the wait. This would have been my ideal tablet if it came with retina and a faster processor

It's more retina than my iPad 2 is :p

Really tempted to sell my iPad 2 and buy one, the smaller screen really seems ideal for my use cases and the smaller keyboard is still easy to type on should I need to. Websites were also perfectly clear when zoomed out so it ticks all my boxes.

Had a play with one in the Apple Store today and have a few thoughts:

Build quality, weight, thickness are all great; very portable and I can see it being easier to cart around than the iPad 4.

I share Fox's concerns about video and the screen ratio, watching Cars in the Apple Store was acceptable but I'm not sure about a full movie though...

Viewing web pages was much nicer than my iPhone, I'm not sure the extra screen real estate of the iPad 4 makes much of a difference in this regard.

However, in general it's almost not enough over the iPhone.

Really torn at the moment, just can't decide between the mini and the iPad.

as an Apple fan - my honest opinion is if you want a 7 inch tablet

go Ipad 4 + Nexus 7 32gig for on the hoof :) (gps etc is useful), or wait for the bargain 3g 32gig Nexus
