iPad Mini...

People saying the nexus 7 feels cheap! Well yea it's made by asus and it is cheep lol.

All opinion I know, I have the Nexus 7 sitting side by side with the Mini and an IPad 3, just to say again, I think it is great the display looks far more vibrant than the 7, web pages appear clearer, the nexus is being sold !

I know Apple will release a Mini with retina soon its their dev cycle, but at this moment in time the Mini just does it for me, form factor display build etc.

I am no fanboy at all, I have had Iphones, windows Phone and Android phones, missus has a s3 I love all tech and think that the Mini is the pick at the moment if you use both the nexus 7 and the Mini back to back to me there is no contest !

Hope this helps somebody !

With the 16gb model how much actual storage space do you get after system files etc?

Also, I have been reading about the iPad Camera USB/SD card addon for importing images from a camera. Can you also use this to import video files from an SD card?

What is the iPads video support like generally, anyway? Does it support all major formats as well as MKV? What happens if you try to watch a 720p file?

Speaking from an ipad 3rd gen standpoint:

Videos I recorded on my camera show up on the ipad fine when I plug the SD card into it.

In terms of supported video formats, it's like having QuickTime installed for the 'out of the box' experience, and there's a number of movie playback apps that will give you something more akin to VLC's playback scope if needed. I don't have any mkv's but I don't worry that the third party apps like avplayerhd couldn't handle them.

The videos all stretch to fit the screen width (you can also zoom in to fill in the horizontal black bars, at the cost of losing some of the widescreen edges), so aside from picture quality, you wouldn't know if you were playing back a 720p or 1080p video.

My full size iPad is reporting 4gb used by system files, seems a lot tbh.

The sd card reader can import normal videos from cameras etc but can't be used to copy full size videos unless you jailbreak it

I use avplayerhd which has played every 720p mkv I have tried and can play most 1080p ones depending on codec (some codecs are accelerated by the GPU if compatable the rest are done by the CPU which isn't quite up to the job on the ipad3 which has the same performance as the mini). The app also allows to you to start up a web or FTP server so you can transfer files direct to the iPad from any pc on the network without the need of iTunes.

I also use air video which allows access to all your media on your pc/server anywhere with an internet connection, it transcodes any incompatible codecs on the fly.

It's not been out that long, but how is the build quality and general realiability of the ipad mini? I'm thinking of buying this for the wife but wondered whether the additional warranty is worth it.

Got a 16GB white/silver mini last week which will be the GFs Xmas present. Had a look at it but left all the protective stuff on it so I could set it up for her ready to go.

I'm very impressed, the build quality is excellent, it feels lovely to hold and it still very usable as a web browser despite the smaller sized screen. Being a retina iPad owner I had no problems with the screen quality either.

All my work colleagues were impressed too, we have a Nexus 7 in the office and the consensus is that it blows it out the water.

When Apple release a retina version, which they will, I will be swapping to the mini form factor and selling my full sized iPad for sure :)

tried an Ipad mini as found one in-store yesterday

had a good play with it - and to be honest I was very disappointed - firstly the positive, the form factor is almost perfect, superb, great build quality, very light, very thin - great

but all of that IMO is let down by the screen - its nowhere near the Ipad 3 - but more importantly IMO it didn't seem as good as the Nexus 7 next to it - either in "sharpness" or in vibrance.

the Ipad has a lovely "smooth", glossy look to photos, graphics etc, Ipad 2 has it to some extent as well.

but the Ipad mini screen just looked a bit drab and pixellated -not nice

Ipad mini retina will be perfect - but its not for me yet - not at that price - I'd prefer an Ipad 3 or a Nexus 7

I tried an iPad Mini today with the intention of buying my partner it for Xmas.
I just didn't like screen, which surprised me because my iPad 2 doesn't seem to be as poor when compared to my iPad 3.

Anyway, i eneded up buying two iPad 4's, one 32GB for her and one 64GB for me. I'll give my 2 to my 14 month old son to watch films in my car. Should hopefully keep him quiet on longer journeys :)

I too was surprised that it didn't look as good as the Ipad 2 screen

you'd expect the Ipad 2 screen to look more pixellated but it didn't - I thought the Ipad 2 screen was better

had a play with an ipad mini today with the intention of buying 2 for me and the wife,

ended up spending the extra and getting a pair of ipads, the 4th gen ipad just looks so much better when you compare them side by side. that said its a capable little bit of kit just needs a spec bump :)

I bought an iPad 3. I doubt I would go to an mini unless it was retina. It is nice to hear that the mini is still OK for a retina user. I thought I would notice a real difference because of being used to the higher res.
