iPad Mini...

Finally had a chance to play with this at the Apple Store the other day. I have to say, I'm not to put off by the smaller form factor as I thought I would be. However, I can't see myself getting one any time soon whilst I have an iPad (3rd Gen) and also the next one has to have a Retina Display!

Probably not the right place to say this but if they can justify making 2 sizes of ipad, why haven't they made 2 sizes of iphone.

Bit different. A phone is a phone first and foremost. It needs to fit into a pocket properly, be comfortable to hold and use 1 handed etc.

I assume you would like them to make a model with a distinctly larger display, à la SGS3 and all the other flagship Android/WP handsets? If so then I doubt they will unless they increase the resolution alongside it, as I can't see Apple lowering the pixel density for the sake of more inches. The iPad Mini has the same number of pixels as the original iPad 1 and 2 so making apps compatible for a new resolution was never an issue.

In two minds about whether a retina iPad mini will happen. Can only see it being the case if they change how iOS works with app scaling.

Right now they're asking developers to support four sizes:

iPhone 3GS / iPhone 4 / iPhone 4S Screen Size (this size is still actively sold and will be the most used for some time)
iPhone 5
iPad 2 & iPad Mini (non retina)
iPad 3/4 (retina)

If the iPad Mini were to go retina it would be in-between the current Mini and iPad 3 & 4 resolutions so would be a fifth resolution to support. Developers have been slow to support the iPhone 5 size so another change would be a step too far.

But then again Apple need to keep the mini competitive with Android offerings. It's iOS that's really showing its age now.

There are 5 device resolutions still supported as of iOS 6:

320x480 (iPhone 3GS)
640x960 (iPhone 4/4S)
640x1136 (iPhone 5)
1024x768 (iPad 1/2/Mini)
2048x1536 (iPad 3rd/4th gen.)

An iPad Mini with Retina display will have the same resolution as the iPad 3rd and 4th gen, which was double that of the non-Retina iPad 1st and 2nd gen.

Ah yes I forgot the 3GS was non retina, so that's five already.

An iPad Mini retina wouldn't have the same resolution as the iPad 3 though as that would be "beyond" retina and would in some ways make it a superior tablet to the bigger more expensive full size iPad?

The reason the iPad mini works is its form factor. It is perfectly proportioned and this is why I got one despite the fact that, arguably, the hardware inside it and screen tech is fairly crap.

If retina increased the thickness or weight then it would lose the core appeal of the iPad Mini.

There is no such thing as "beyond" Retina. It's purely a marketing term thought up by Apple to coin displays where individual pixels are imperceptible to the naked eye.

The PPI of the iPad Mini is the same as the iPhone 3GS. If they doubled the resolution to match that of the iPad 3/4 it would have the same PPI as the iPhone 4/4S/5.

Worth getting rid of my iPad retina, with 02 Recycle for £285, and getting the iPad mini? Or shall I wait for a hopeful retina version next year, hardly use the iPad you see, so don't mind pocketing the cash as lately got a MBA

Tbh I have a ipad 3 retina but since I picked up the mini the 3 is hardly used at all.

I find the mini more portable & the perfect armchair browsing companion.

Cheers all

My parents opened their iPad Mini tonight and absolutely loved it. Within 5 mins they were face-timing family in Australia.

It was one of those priceless moments :)

Oh I know what you are saying. I'm not saying that they should replace the iphone with a bigger one, just maybe offer 2 sizes. I'm struggling to think of anyone I know that doesn't have a smartphone but in comparison, not that many people have a tablet. I know quite a few people that went from an iphone 3/4 to SGS2/3 or similar mainly for the bigger screen.

Problem is it's not just the resolution, it's a combination of that and the screen size. Add "retina" 2048x1536 to a 7.8" display and you need to scale a lot of the text/icons/buttons up or you're just going to have a LOT of people squinting because they can't actually read it. In which case you basically need a sixth "resolution" that app developers need to develop for.
