iPhone 3GS - Available on Orange soon

What annoyed me is the fact that even though ive been on orange for a few years, i cant upgrade to the iphone at a cheaper price in any form. Quite annoyed that even as an upgrade i have to pay the same as a new customer.

Same, I been with them 10 years, have a £30 discount on any tariff I have (currently on panther 45 I think, I pay £15 a month) and none of this counts for anything when it comes to getting an iphone.

You're stupid to choose an iphone on Orange, the O2 deal is still better due to the FUP on the internet traffic.

Completely agree with you there mate. I've been with them for 4 years next year and when it's upgrade to iphone time, it will count for nothing. Bad practice. Having said that though, it's the same on my O2 contract (which I have had for 5 years).

Very poor show, we'll reward loyalty, but not on the iphone.

Get a payngo Iphone and a simplicity deal, retarded thing is it STILL works out cheaper.

...

I just dont understand this

Or if you have a usage pattern like I do, which involves mostly calls from my favourite place (home and work both included - handy), and lots of data. I've topped up each of the first two months I've had it. I've ended up with so much credit left I won't bother topping up this month, and maybe not next month either.

Oh, and O2 decided in their infinite wisdom to give me £100 cashback. No idea why they did that, but I'm not going to complain. :)

PS - I'll consider Simplicity when the 12 months free Web runs out.

Can you use a simplicity contract with an iPhone? - will it work even the 3G internet as I need it for work. Works out cheaper per month plus I believe theres cash back too.

On the macformat podcast dated 5th October there's a good section about getting an iphone contact for less.

Well i caved in and ordered one as my "upgrade".

Does anyone know if orange have slapped any custome icons / UI on the iphone like they normally do? As if they have ill be cancelling it.

Just been offered an iphone 3GS 32GB brand new sealed for £420 unlocked on all networks! Slightly tempted by it, as I have a Nokia E71 and XDA Orbit 2 that I can sell and get some money back from.

It doesn't matter how much traffic O2 give you if their 3G coverage is so appalling that you can't use it most of the time.

It depends where you live though. O2 have higher customer satisfaction ratings for mobile broadband than Orange by a long way so it can't be all that bad.

Got a link for that? I find it hard to imagine since Orange have about three times the 3G coverage area, plus O2's network is chronically oversubscribed and rarely gives you more than 500kbps unless it's the middle of the night and you're sitting on a cell tower.

Yes it's the industry recognised JD Power survey:

http://www.ispreview.co.uk/news/EkFFlukkVyuNeysnvE.html

Mobile broadband customer satisfaction index

O2 - 712
T-Mobile - 683
Vodafone - 655
Orange - 636
Three (3) - 606

I guess your experience isn't a typical one, but of course there will always be people/areas who have problems. I have no problems with my O2 mobile connection/coverage and I use it on the train all of the time including on a recent trip to Glasgow where I only lost connection about 3 times on the 6 hour journey (using ssh/irc).

Not sure about that.

That's Ofcom's 3G coverage map from the beginning of the year. That's quite a few people who will have 3G signal on Orange but not on O2 (and essentially none for whom the reverse is true!)

It's not a new problem: O2 also has a history of struggling to meet its 3G obligations.

I guess that just proves along with the customer satisfaction index that it's not all about coverage. :)

O2 handle more mobile data than any other provider and yet have the happiest customers, they must be doing something right.

Obviously your mileage may vary as seen with your own experiences.

I'll just be coming into my 10th year of being an Orange customer. I really wanted an iPhone, but I refuse to be tied into another 18 month contract for no reason, and a 24 month one at all.

Orange have really let me down this last 12-18 months with my faulty HTC Touch Diamonds and generally crap coverage for normal GSM or whatever (phone) network. 3G coverage doesn't seem to be all that good either, except at home, when I use the computer anyway.

Looks like they'll be losing my business to O2 if my loyalty counts for nothing here.

Same here.

I am giving serious thought to going to Vodaphone as I really like the look of the Storm 2.

Going to check one out this weekend.

Got to love the world loyalty, you pay for minutes per month they dont owe you nothing lets not BS here people dont stay with provider becuse there loyal it becuse your on a good deal at the time, then when dont get what you want dummy OUT! im off to another network! Just lol to the whole thing and thats everyone including me :)

blagged and blagged and blagged and blagged today on the phone to Orange, they wouldn't budge at all regarding the prices :p

to upgrade with an actual decent bundle would have cost me just under £900 (16GB 3GS) over 18 months... for a friggin phone.

but got a brilliant deal on a Hero so went for that in the end. 'tis a shame but i think i'll leave the iPhone for the rich!

What deal did you get for the HTC Hero?

My orange contact ends Dec 28th, so I was considering upgrading either to the iphone or htc hero, Im currently on the Dolphin35 plan with 600mins & unlimited texts. I called in the Orange store for some general pricing info & was told if I want the HTC hero I will have to pay £96+ for the phone .. I looked at the iphone tariffs & the 18month, 8GB £34pcm.26 has a cost of £96.50 with 600mins & 500 texts. So now im not really sure what is the best option to go for

Altho I will make sure I dont speak to the sales advisor I did today as he for some strange reason felt the need to keep implying that I couldn't afford to purchase a phone ... when I said i was looking at the HTC hero, he pulled an odd face, inhaled heavily & said 'oo you know you will have to pay for that one, ill check the matrix' .. came back 'oh yes that would be £96+, maybe for you the new HTC Tattoo would be better, its free'. All I wanted was the info on the HTC hero as I was considering popping back 2moro to upgrade early ... Ive been with orange 3yrs & as I do appreciate staff trying to give me the best deal, I dont like being talked down to as if i'm some kind of crazy pauper with deluded expectations where all phones are free. After all arent they trained to try & take your money away? *sigh* mini-rant over pmsl:p

The thing is, which i think you missed, is that people who have been on Orange for quite a few years, and are entitled to upgrade (me being one of them) have been shafted by the iPhone deals, because if it was any other phone, it would be an upgrade as normal, but because its the all signing all dancing iPhone, it doesnt matter, and therefor we dont get an "upgrade" at all, we are just allowed to enter another contract and buy a new phone 3 months early or whatever at the same price as Joe Bloggs who is new to the Orange network. See our point?

Customer Loyalty is something that keeps a business going, especially a phone network. So to say they owe us nothing is like saying "we dont care if you leave us" imo.

This is the same situation that happened on O2, there is a common factor between both situations that could be having an impact...
