*** iPhone 5 - Revealed! ***

Im trying to rationalise why Apple have only supported what they have supported when it comes to 4G LTE, they arent really a company to provide technical features that dont have market, so it makes me think that they didnt get assurances from the UK networks (or OFCOM) other than EE that during the lifetime of the iP5 when its their top model that they will have 4G capabilities.

Makes me think that sticking how I am to a 3G+ plan makes much more sense than to even attempt to afford a 4G plan from a single provider. When 3G came out it was silly how overpriced those plans where because of networks trying to recoup the investment into 3G licenses and thats when they were all competing with each other.

The thought of EE being the only commercial 4G LTE company for the year ahead just makes me shudder how poorly competitive their contracts will be either in length, allowances or cost or most likely all 3. Its not like you could take your business elsewhere, especially as you are already a very warm customer...

I think EE say 98% coverage of the uk by 2014

And Vodafone said 98% by 2015

So if you say the life of any iPhone is 2 years as the S updates don't really count as bit updates and most people are 24 month contracts.

Then only supporting EE LTE for the iPhone makes sense as over the next 2 years they will make there way upto the 98% where as vodaphone will be on its way for the iPhone 6.

The S update counts as in its a nice way to add support for all the 4G LTE bands within their normal launch windows without the silly 'hiccup' the Verizon phone felt like. This time next year I cant see how we wont have publicised 4G launch details for all the main UK networks aswell as probably timelines for coverage landmarks.

Will the iP5S be still too early for useful 4G coverage? Most likely...

I can't get over how much the prices of the iPhone 4 has come down due to the iPhone 5 been released. On eBay they are going for no more than 120 quid near me! Absolute bargain if you ask me.

The 4S is going for no more than 250 too. Bloody crazy if you ask me. It appears that the iPhone 5 will be a big success for Apple.

You can't blame them for not supporting or targetting 4G/LTE here in the UK, when we don't even have any 4G services up and running (trials aside) quite yet. EE will have their network up soon but then the iPhone 5 supports that. Whilst it won't support any other networks' 4G services, they're not going to launch until late next year anyway, so I'm sure Apple will re-evaluate support for the iPhone 6.

4G is a total non-issue for me. I've never once been on 3G and thought "omg this is so slow, come on!!". It's more than fast enough for what I want to do with a phone. I'd actually be more interested in 4G on my iPad - will be interesting to see if the next model adds support for the proposed UK frequencies ready for the rollout later next year.

to be fair i got the s3 , its my mates im using it at the moment and its a brick. the 4.8 inch screen is just far to big for normal day to day use.

I guess everyone has different needs. my ideal phone is a cross between galaxy s2 and iphone 5 size.

I'm quite confused by the whole announcement. Quite frankly I want the phone, mainly because:

I haven't had a new phone for 2 years and want something new and shiny.

I also want it be an iPhone, as i use the iPod side continuously, along with some other features that make it much easier to use compared to some alternatives (IMO, anyway...)

However the 5 just feels like quite a small step forward. The changes they've made don't make much sense to me either. LTE on only some frequencies? A screen thats taller but not even a little wider? A new connector the isn't micro usb compatible or magnetic? Only marginal battery life improvement (yet to be properly confirmed i guess). And to be honest its very expensive for what it is, 529 for 16gb of memory is a joke.

So i've got the 32Gb black on order - 'Preparing for Shipment' Delivers 9/21

Phoned Vodafone just now for a Nano sim. Should get it early next week.

Sorted.

I think that's a bit harsh, have you actually used an S3? It's far from being a tablet.

Yes. It's a nasty, cheap, massive phone and i have big hands. I honestly cannot see the appeal of it whatsoever and the fanboyism towards it when comparing to an iPhone is crazy in my opinion. They're two very different products in my eyes.

I have decently sized hands and can handle it easily.

What don't you like about it? Are you sure you don't mean the Galaxy Note...?

I do mean the Galaxy. I've used the S2 moreso than the S3. I just find them incredibly cheap feeling and FAR too big and my handspan is 9 inches thumb to pinky. I just cannot handle and look at it objectively to form a positive opinion about it.

Yeah, it may be powerful but to me...it's just cheap and nasty. I find the OS even more ridiculous. Why do i need these stupid gratuitous animations to move around the UI, it cheapens the experience. It's just not intuitive also. EDIT - I understand you can tailor the OS to your fancy but why should I? I honestly can't be bothered to.

I'm intrigued what people find so good about it though...because i just cannot see it. Maybe I'm a blind fanboy.

It isn't on the same level of premium as the iPhone, that's very obvious.

As for the software, not everyone gets on with Android, I can appreciate that, many of the 'computery' features are lost on me and I find them pointless, I like the simplicity of iOS and the high, uniform quality feel of the various apps.

However, the Galaxy S 3 is a very powerful/capable phone overall, it pretty much nails many of the key requirements from a hardware perspective, such as -

Excellent, large, high quality HD screen
Lots of CPU and GPU power
Very good battery life
A solid antenna/wifi signal, decent speaker, notification LED, etc
Brilliant HD video recording and a very good camera
80GB of possible storage with a 64GB SD card

So surely you can see the appeal of it, even if you consider it to be ugly and cheap feeling, I don't think it feels premium either.

I can see the appeal of it with regards to one-upmanship and making users feel like they truely have the best phone on the market spec wise, of course, but then again hardware doesn't run on its own and I just prefer the intuitive no nonsense GUI that iOS provides. Maybe part of the reason I dislike it so much is due to how Android users hold them in such high regard so when I actually have a play and hold the device I'm left somewhat bemused at what they were going on about...this could probably be the same for Android users listening to Apple fans waffle on about the iPhone.

I'm never going to get on with the size of the phone though, so its capabilities are lost on me.

It's exactly the same. iPhone users waffle on constantly about how simple and easy to use ios is 'fresh out of the box'. Well my OneS was simple and easy to use 'fresh out of the box', so was my dads S3. Neither really needed tweaking at all, i've only changed launcher on mine for aesthetic purposes rather than function.

I don't understand how you can say it's unintuitive? It's no more complicated than ios on first use in my opinion. And this was my first android phone when i'd had far more experience with ios than android previously.

You dont have big hands......

the s3 is on the limit for most people, I would imagine.

It's totally a subjective matter. Everything from unlocking the phone to opening apps I've found to be far easier on the iOS. But as said, it's a subjective matter and not really worth discussing any further.
