Iphone apps

he knows exactly what hes talking about. he is talking about multitasking. in all fairness if the 3gs had a flash and multitasking i would probably own one.(mainly due to ease of use with my macbook) but it doesnt and they are massive massive things missing from a trendy smartphone imo

Going from a omnia which had flash to iphone I have never EVER once missed it... you just don't really need it. Sure they will have to add it at some point, but the whole interweb does not rely on it.

Having mult apps open at once is not a deal breaker, just don't need it really.... it also makes most phones chug abit (my missus has a pre and though the OS is god like the hw can't cope)

Email warning pops up, I check email and close it... want to check facebook I open it and close it, want to check ebay I open it and close it etc etc. I would like live feeds though.

The only time I've missed it a little is when streaming radio and wanted to check email, but tbh the phone is so lightening quick im back to the radio in seconds.

If someone gave me one I would stamp on it.

Or is there already an app to combat that ?

then your a fool (no insult intended) :D

i would use it as my main handset until something came out on market that was a nice / easy to use and live with... give it another 6 months or so and you might find something

the ihpone is not something to hate, it's just a phone that is a great tool be it for entertainment or business, I feel naked without mine, it's my mobile office and comms hub on the move

It's only recently (Xmas period>) that the Android platform has physicially caught up to iPhone levels of fit and finish in terms of hardware - the Milestone (Droid) from Motorola and the new Nexus One released by Google and HTC as well as the new HTC Bravo coming shortly and other Snapdragon powered handsets are set to change a lot of things.

See, until now the Android platform has been in the first generation still, hardware specs had not changed much, handsets were still running on weaker processors with small amounts of RAM that would mean a sluggish experience for the modern day smartphone user unless they were experienced enough to benefit from installing a custom ROM which solved many sluggish issues as well as added new features.

I think it will take a few more months at the every least for these new handsets to show what Android is all about, heck even early polls show Android uptake since Droid's release is set to rocket up.

I think it's then that the big names in business will do something about it and release their apps to the Android Market because these new Snapdragon phones are allowing users to do things that iPhone won' allow currently or in the near future such as multitasking, HD (720P) video recording or at the very least 720x480 DVD resolution video recording.

And then there's the complete Google services integration since more and more people are using their Google accounts to manage stuff now.

I think Android 2.0.1/2.1 and these new high powered HTC/moto phones are the first steps to really getting Android into the hands of iPhone users who want more freedom and as soon as that happens the big brands will jump on board as well.

Popularity sells and Google is always getting more popular....moreso the past 12-18 months.

All the people at uni have got blackberries, in fact a few of my mates are dropping their iphones for them now. Once the novelty wears off you just want a phone that is a phone, that you can txt from, can surf the net on and check facebook/play a few simple games/tasks etc.

Which is the point i was making before...that i see plenty of people including teenagers all rocking BB's now...i see it more and more over in America/Canada where i spend a lot of time...reading crackberry a lot of people have ditched the iphone because for a multimedia device its a media whores wet dream come true ie my brother but as a phone it fails pretty hard.

I do ask this genuinely but is it possible to talk on the iphone but also text, type out an email or browse the internet??...i havent really tried it out on my brothers iphone as hes usually glued to it:p.

So can you do that on the iphone??..im 99% sure you cant...although i may be wrong.

Talk on the iphone and text/type/browse at the same time you mean?

i just find it funny that the most common 'pro' for the iphone on this forum seems to be 'usability' when in most cases people here usually coudlnt care less about that kind of thing

I find SSH, VNC, and a Cisco VPN client on my iPhone very usable. So much so with my RSA token and iPhone I can sit in the pub, log into the corporate network and fix machines. I can VNC to my desk machine, close the ticket the customer raised and go back to supping a pint.

It meets my needs of:

1) Usability
2) Features
3) Style/looks
4) Keeping a cold beer in front of me whilst on call.

:D

I think that you are more of a fashionista for knocking the iphone without ever probably having owned one. I have always been a nokia owner, with some Ipaq devices and SE here and there, I now have an iphone and a corpate blackberry and the iphone is by far the best device I have ever owned. Everything just works, including the regular telephony aspect, the appstore is fantastic, the touch interface.

You are probably measuring 'superior' on features, while the iphone may not be bleeding edge it is by far the best implemented and most refined device on the market and that's what apple do very well.

My 2 cents.

Of course you can, do it all the time when checking cinema times or something when chatting with mates over loudspeaker/handsfree - Spawn mate, you really need to remove so much bias - iPhone may not be up your street but you do sound very bitter over nothing reading over your replies in this thread, which Im quite surprised about...

ps3ud0

Spawn where has this hate of the iphone come from?

I'm waiting for my iphone to arrive next Thursday (from Vodafone) :)

You can't blame people for making applications for the most marketable medium.

You've just got to wait for the others to catch up.

Relax dude...i asked a simple question and got an answer for it:)...as for being bitter dont be silly:confused:...i give the iphone its dues where it deserves it ie web browsing....still waiting for all these phone manufacturers to come up with a true iphone killer...as of yet i havent seen anything that comes close to the iphone web browsing experience.

I dont hate the device...i think its a pretty nifty device as it is but my main gripes with it is the frankly stupid battery life...i mean to get any decent useage out of it you need to turn off 3G then turn off apples incarnation of push email, which lets face it isnt 'true' push email lol. Also the lack of true multi tasking is something that im not keen on...but i guess if they added multi tasking the battery would last minutes rather than hrs lol.

I am hoping apple with the next incarnation of the iphone improve the battery and add multi tasking...then i might consider getting one.

How big is the apple that your getting shafted with??:p

Im not blaming anyone...i have enough apps that are useful for my BB and my daily life....i just cant stand the smugness of the iphone user.

As for waiting for others to catch up??...i dont know about that really...maybe one day there will be a true iphone killer out...the new google nexus 1 is being touted as one...i dont know if it is really...will be interesting to see real world reviews. I think my brother in Canada is toying with the idea of getting one...so will wait and see what he says about it if he gets one.

Not noticed smug iphone users tbh, just bitter people complaining and trying to pick fault with the iphone, some how trying to justify not having one.

How much do you pay per month for your BB?

Both my BB's are bought off line, sim free...i dont as a rule buy network branded phones although my Storm2 is vodafone branded but its very minimal.

I dont need to justify not having an iphone...i dont see it doing anything much better than what my BB's do without minimum of fuss. Other than web browsing theres not much the iphone can do that my BB's cant do...but i dont spend a lot of time browsing on my BB's...only now and again if i need to and yes people will slate the BB's for their rubbish web browser but it does me perfectly fine.

And the kicker for iphone users is that Apple have decided not to add Flash support to their devices...why no one really knows...im safe in the knowledge that at some point my BB's will have flash support.

Are you on PAYG with your BB's?

You seen to be doing very well with the "not justifying having an iphone" ;)

"It doesn't do this or this, but the BB does this and this so I have one of those"

:)

I think you just lost all credibility in saying a iphone is not a smartphone.

Smartphones are phones that you know, do other things, like web, documents, gaming, email. To be a smartphone you don't need to be able to multitask in a computer like way. There is no smartphone rulebook. I do long for abit of multitasking at times, but it's not a deal breaker and very rarely do I miss it, especially when the phone is so fast

It is very much a smartphone, the smartphone that bought smartphones from the realms of business and geeks hands to everyone. The best smartphone for several years only now being matched and beaten in areas by others.

It also raised the bar, sure the GUI is now lagging behind abit, but from and speed and usability point of view it's still out there at the front

I have aleways hated apple, but the iphone to me as a ex geek and normal man on the street just feels right to use, well done apple

Some of the iphone bashing here wears a little thin, just because you can't easily root it and play command line tennis or ascii quake doesn't mean it's a bad phone :)

edit: you might want to read this

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Smartphone

By that logic my SE K800 and K850 were both smartphones. I afree with Spawn (i've actually posted an almost identical post on here before). The iPhone is a sort of step between the true smartphones (Symbian and WM) and the dumbphones. The K800 and K850 can do everything the iPhone can do but aren't as powerful as the iPhone. The iPhone can't do a lot of the things that a true smartphone can do (like multitasking and customisation). However this could be due to my classification of what a smartphone is/should be, a mobile computer that is just as useable and customisable as your average PC. There is a reason Symbian and WM are used in true mobile computers as well as phones, they are that customisable and powerful.

Actually even looking at that wiki article the iPhone isn't by definition a smartphone.

(I've not mentioned Android as i'm not too sure where to place it in the spectrum, previously I have placed it next to Symbian but although it is more PC like than the iPhone it doesn't quite have the functionality of WM and Symbian. Perhaps if the dumphones were a 1 an WM and symbian 2 the iPhone would be around 1.5 and Android 1.8?)

A smartphone is a mobile phone offering advanced capabilities, often with PC-like functionality (PC-mobile handset convergence).

Not really tbh, it doesn't offer the PC like functionality that WM and Symbian do and if you take that out of the definition then the K8xx phones can be classed as smartphones.

Do you really want to be faffing with a complex GUI on the move, I want simplicity... as so it seem do a lot of other people. I want to hit a button see email, hit another and not see email

I think all the iphone needs is possibly multitasking / task switcher, and a home screen for live feed apps.

These two things from a OS point of view would put it back in front again.

Maybe a AMOLED screen with larger res and a nicer camera... thats all I think ;)

With my WM powered HD all I need to do is slide along the bottom bar til I get to emails then click "new" to start sending. Want music? slide along a little less, photo/video, a little more. Want a little used program? Hit the start menu and the iPhoneesq (well SE esq as that is essentially where Apple stole the UI from) UI comes up where I can choose the app I want.

As for the original question yes it does annoy me that some of the larger companies are only releasing programs for the iPhone, however I found most of them can be done using websites anyway, many optimised for high resolution phone browsing anyway.

Why do people feel the need to justify not having an iphone and ram down people's throats that what they have is better / just as good?

Yeah there are lots of nice phones out there, the iphone is just an example of one well marketed smartphone.

Nope i have 2 contracts that i use with my BB's...theres a lot of things the BB does that the iphone does and does better imho. I havent said that the iphone cant do this but the BB can...all ive said is that whatever the iphone can do the BB can do just as well...we just dont have over 90k of apps which some are useful but the majority dont seem to serve any purpose.

But anyways im done with this iphone malarky...ill leave you iphone lovers in peace...
