Iphone apps

I fully agree to an extent Flukester, sometimes the ismugness winds me up, i've been a wm user about 7 years, mainly for fact that i can customize the phone to how i want.

There are plenty of apps that will do a specific job on WM its a tried and tested platform after all, apple have done a great job with the app store making installing much easier for the masses.

But i don't think it offers anything above and beyond WM other than ease of use. If you've lived with WM for so long the ease of use is just the same.

This is somewhat true but is starting to lose the edge that it had in that devices such as the N900 are becoming less dependant on apps and more browser-based. I can use full internet banking now, so don't need that, msn is integrated so don't need an app for that, nor do I need a facebook app as I have full facebook available. There are widgets that are useful but it is becoming like windows - you no longer need to have a program to copy cd's or play music if you don't want to - ok there are better versions available but the point stands. I actually think the iphone is a little annoying, requiring an app for everything. Just how many do people use anyway and how many £m are wasted on rubbish...?

You mean like how when the iPhone came out everyone bitched about it not having apps because apple said all that were needed were webapps?

The iPhone is not a fashion accessory anymore, nobody even notices if you have one. Over 80% of the people in my office have them, 3 out of my 4 family members have one, about 60% of my friends have one.

The reason people like them are that the are damn easy to use. My dad got one and he loves it. He downloads apps all the time and uses it to its full potential. This is a guy who struggles to use Windows XP. I guarentee that if I pursuaded him to get an Android or Palm phone he wouldn't be able to use it properly. The same goes with girls and kids I know, they just pick it up and start using it. That says something about how apple have truly innovated and brought the smartphone to the masses.

Why must people insist on calling the iphone a smartphone??...it isnt by any stretch of the imagination.
The fact that the iphone still cannot multi task properly doesnt make it a smartphone....hell i dont even think calling it a dumbphone is doing it any justice either...it sits somewhere in the middle of being a smartphone and a dumbphone...i suppose the ease of use of it makes it a pretty good dumbphone though:p.

But i do agree with people when they say the iphone is easy to use and understand...thats where Apple have done well because even my 6 yr old nephew can pick his mums iphone up and use it pretty easily.

The last time I checked the mobile development platforms the Iphone is classified as a smartphone. That’s like saying the original Nokia Ngage wasn’t a smartphone just because it was designed mainly for playing games.

You could make a similar argument about Blackberrys. They can't run native 3rd party apps so they're not smartphones.

The lines are blurred. I can't wait for the day when everyone goes back to calling the device in their pocket "a phone" and nothing else.

Watching videos of the new Nexus VS iPhone browser test it failed miserably. I mean, why can't android get these things right? Apple did?

Are you referring to the test where the three handsets (Nexus One, iPhone and Milestone) are side by side and connect to the Engadget site at the same time?

I would discard that completely.

The web page was clearly cached on the iPhone and it gets directed to the iPhone optimised site anyway.

I think the phrase you are looking for is 'dumbed down'. Dumbed down to an extent where the UI is neigh on un-customisable and is a big jumble of icons. You have one button that closes down the application you are using and returns to the homescreen. It's all down to preference, I don't need apple to hold my hand and I don't need apple to tell me what features I can or can't have. I am looking forward to the release of the 4G iPhone, however if it's just more of the same I will just lol.

I think you just lost all credibility in saying a iphone is not a smartphone.

Smartphones are phones that you know, do other things, like web, documents, gaming, email. To be a smartphone you don't need to be able to multitask in a computer like way. There is no smartphone rulebook. I do long for abit of multitasking at times, but it's not a deal breaker and very rarely do I miss it, especially when the phone is so fast

It is very much a smartphone, the smartphone that bought smartphones from the realms of business and geeks hands to everyone. The best smartphone for several years only now being matched and beaten in areas by others.

It also raised the bar, sure the GUI is now lagging behind abit, but from and speed and usability point of view it's still out there at the front

I have aleways hated apple, but the iphone to me as a ex geek and normal man on the street just feels right to use, well done apple

Some of the iphone bashing here wears a little thin, just because you can't easily root it and play command line tennis or ascii quake doesn't mean it's a bad phone :)

Do you really want to be faffing with a complex GUI on the move, I want simplicity... as so it seem do a lot of other people. I want to hit a button see email, hit another and not see email

I think all the iphone needs is possibly multitasking / task switcher, and a home screen for live feed apps.

These two things from a OS point of view would put it back in front again.

Maybe a AMOLED screen with larger res and a nicer camera... thats all I think ;)

Faffing about?

Doesn't really get much simpler, 3 home screens for widgets + shortcuts and then a quick flick up for the menu. The iPhone is so simplified that it's just not intuitive enough.

erm... big icons look nice, just like a ip....... lol

how are those big icons more intuitive than big icons on a iphone

a big icon is just as it says on tin, a big icon

I finally got a iphone a couple of months ago after seeing the sales guys at works phones and how easy everything was.

After years with winmo it's a breath of fresh air... everyone has one because they just do the job in hand, never had a single problem with it

great email, ok browsing, great apps and games if im bored... oh and the touch screen is still one of best out there for ease of use

i don't care if a phone is 'cool' to have or not... i just want it to do the job I ask without having to tweak and hack, change roms etc etc, im sick of all that rubbish.

people buy iphone apps and thats why people code them, fair play... I don't mind paying 59p for a app I really like, certainly makes all other platforms look rubbish from a software catalog point of view... nothing comes close

iphone envy, it's a terrible thing ;)

I agree with this, it's laughable to say that everyone who has bought an iphone just "followed the crowd" rather than "exercised choice". My major gripe with other available phones were that they were frustratingly slow, the iphone is like lightning compared to every other phone ive tried (Hero was probably the best available alternative when I bought my 3GS and that chugged), it just works and does everything quickly. Seems to me like it's more fashionable to despise the iphone because it's apple and love android because it's google.

Onto the point about apps, I think it's probably just a matter of volume at the minute. With something like 30 million iphones in the world, there's huge marketing potential in free apps and huge revenue potential for developers creating paid for apps. Android is still playing catchup and will continue to do so until the hardware/platform appears to attract the masses (Maybe Nexus?). Until android catches up in volume then the iphone is the more attractive proposition, why pay to develop the app twice when you can reach up to 30million people with just one version?

Although thinking about it, the nexus probably isnt doing its sales any favours being (generally) handset only. That kind of deal only really tends to appeal to geeks et al, who just want to buy the handset. To get proper market penetration then it probably needs to be subsidised and on one (or all) of the major networks (O2, Orange, Voda).

What have you done with your n97 fox ?
Im having a nightmare with mine.
on vodafone aswell.
sent them an email about all the problems ie dropping calls, no network coverage, apps not working, phone restarts itself etc etc.
I got a reply saying your phone is insured lol arrrhhhhhhhhhhh.

its more of laughing at the people who are getting shafted by Apple left, right and centre...

Got to say this is the part that sticks out to me and which I agree with the most, it does seem to me if you want to do anything with the iphone, apple are standing there saying pay me! it seems to me to many people get confused with good marketing and a good product lets face it you are already paying a premium for the phone before you even get it out of the box. It however does remind me of Microsoft as both companies are very good at doing business with not necessary the best product.

I would admit I have been close on many occasions to buying an Iphone so please don't think I am trying to be all superior here but I have always not gone with it based on value for money. I think the real question is however who else has a complete package? There are many other phones and smart phones but with a fairly big fault IMHO which is a fair use policy of 500mb p/m on an unlimited internet package which is a killer on any smartphone as all of the "cool" features are internet based.

I sell mobile services (amongst other things) but not iPhones. And yet, I have two iPhones. Why? I'm dammed sure it isn't because I'm concerned about fashion items, especially not one that is hidden away for 99% of the time. No, I got them because the iPhone was far superior to anything else around at the time. And I haven't seen anything else to beat it yet.

So, you think the iPhone is nothing more than a fashion item. Tell me again, what is it you drive? :p :D :D ;)
