iRacing

I don't think Iracing's way of doing it is too bad but I agree it's super strict at spa compared to other tracks for some reason.

It's more lenient this year than last. Some drivers still managed to get hilarious numbers of incidents in the 24, then had the sheer cheek to complain at losing multiple license levels. :D

I'm not complaining about getting a x1 for off tracks. I'm complaining about the way it's implemented compared to real life racing and the inconsistency from track to track. Half the x1 you get for off tracks you haven't left the track at all.

If you take turn one at Watkins Glen and compare to turn five at Road America. The former allow you to use all of the run off area, the latter does not.

Either way there's not much point complaining. I doubt they will ever change it.

Had my first race on oval with actual people. Was all excited going in. Qualified 8th... Got rammed three times from behind during the warm up lap and then rammed from behind slowing for a corner half way through on lap 20 odd by same car and get disqualified. Marvellous. Awesome result.

Getting out of oval rookies is harder than rookie road racing.

You'd be better off starting from the back or the pits. You're only in rookies to earn safety rating to get your D licence. So clean laps are more important than anything else.

Either way don't expect not to have the same thing happen in higher licence races. I've had it happen to me in top split GT3 on the formation lap.

I'm going to have another go this afternoon and try the mazda in a race. Longer track should make it more spread out and hopefully most of the clowns will end up wrecked or disqualified before they have a chance to go kamikaze on me :P I will say one thing - it's bloody good fun for the most part. I've subbed for 12 month so need to make the most of it! Already planning on getting a proper seat after the house move and space allows. I shall report back later and see what kind of mood it's put me in ha ha

Was it USA Intl Speedway? It's a horrible track for rookies, I got out of oval rookies at Charlotte, a nice big track.

Yeah the tiny little one! Charlotte was the first track I drove and it's bigger and flat out so probably better. I am gonna have a drive in the mazda later today and see if I can do better.

Did the 3pm and 4pm mazda races and managed a total of 3 incidents between them all minor and all bar one my own fault. Finished 6th and then 9th and my Sr has gone up :P this is by far the most fun I've had in a game in years! I was actually doing far better on the second race and then I got all excited and forgot how to drive.... On the last lap.... Oh well. Practice practice practice.

Enjoy the rookie freedom of not having an iRating to loose.

May I suggest the VRS website as a source of set ups for future series, but also an aid to driving the correct line, braking points, acceleration, gearing etc. Even on the free membership there's a wealth of helpful content.

I'm not affiliated with them in anyway, I just find it a useful website for set ups and track guides.

I shall definitely check that out. Definitely need to spend some time on track. Got a few days off this week coming so plan on having a few races when I can :D will give oval another try when it switches back to Charlotte. Enjoing the road much more at the moment. Also have my Rift.. That's still in its box.. Need more time!!!

I'm hoping to get it all set up tomorrow afternoon or Tuesday when I'm off work. Finding the time with real life getting in the way!!

I actually fired up my wheel this evening for the first time in 6 months and had a go with the 488 GTE - that thing is absolutely on rails. I used to drive a lot of the GT1 Aston, and compared to that this thing is like a scalextric; it's glued to the road. Absolute blast too.

I managed a 2:00.4 around RA on a race set from VRS, no idea if it's any good. The weather was particularly kind though, being overcast. This has got me hankering for an OSW and HE pedals again now. The wife has gone to hide the bank cards.

Weather is silly so you can ever really judge unless it's a set time of day. I went from a practice session where my setup felt great straight to the race where I was 4 secs a lap slower and it felt like crap. Iracing really need to change the sensitive temperature tyre model.

The weather is a major issue for me, particularly with qualifying attached to races.

You go and practice in an official session. Then register for a race. Join the race and find the weather is hotter. So you just have between half and one lap of warm up to acclimatise before being chucked into qualifying.

It's getting to a point where there's no point practicing beyond a few laps to get your line right, before jumping into races. Because in almost every race I do the weather is hotter than any practice I've done previously.

Add that to the problem of slower cars on long tracks and sometimes you have seconds to spare to get both qualifying laps in. Skippy at Road America leaves about 10 seconds of leeway to do out lap and both qualifying laps.

Surely it can't be that hard to adjust the length of qualifying to suit the track.

To be fair, that's pretty realistic when you consider your average race weekend. The practice sessions will be in the morning and qualifying some time later, so the drivers will still have to acclimatise quickly on their qualifying outlaps.

I think the issue is that there's just too much of a difference in feel between the hot/cold weather.

To a point I agree.

But if you take F1 qualifying, it takes place an hour after free practice 3 so for the most part not a massive change in track conditions. Plus they get at least 20 minutes in the first qualifying session.

Similarly there's not a four second spread between lap times depending on weather conditions except when it's wet.

And let's face it they are all professionals with teams of personal accumulating knowledge and passing it on to the driver.

We get half a warm up lap to access the difference between what we've just spent an hour practicing in against what iRacing decides we have to qualify on.

F1 is quite possibly the exception though, or certainly some of the nicest scheduling...

I did a couple of seasons of motorbike racing at club level, the Friday was usually a purely optional test day, then Saturday we had a 10-15 minute qualifying, a wait of upto 4 hours before race 1 and around 4 hours till race 2. Then on Sunday we'd have an even shorter warmup, around 5 minutes, almost not worth bothering with, before again 2 races around 4 hours apart.

In just 2 seasons I remember several occasions where the whether changed drastically, including downpours just before racing with everyone rushing to switch to wets and make it to the grid.

Not saying that the vast time differences in iracing between two dry weather setups are in anyway accurate, it seems bizarre if so and not something I ever experienced on the bike. At least with the skippy it's nice and easy to deal with, I use the same setup no matter what weather/track.

I do the same, maybe just a click or two on the tyre pressures if the temp if waaay off where I practised. The weather affects the driving style required more than setup.
