iRacing

Does Project Cars use laser scanned tracks too? That's looking interesting.

Some tracks that aren't in the game yet will be laser scanned.

It isn't that great a game though, graphically it looks nice but I always thought the cars handled horribly and I recently got a refund and spent it on iRacing :p

A bit harsh?

Some of the cars handle better than others, but since it's still in alpha anything can change. But that's discussion for the pCARS thread.:D

A little bit, a few cars where pretty decent. Mainly the Formula B and Asano Touring car and of course it is still in Alpha so could still turn out good.

I was 4th drifting behind the 3rd guy on Charlotte oval! Only two laps left and was going to swing past him and grab my first podium. Adrenaline kicked in though and I fluffed up a corner and collided with the wall :(

Been there and done that. Wait until you're in a position to win your first race. That one gets the pulse going.

Did you manage to finish at all?

woot new season is here.

What we all racing, for me my main event will be the GT cup with a bit of grand am on the side racing the MP4. Second up will be the MX5 Roadster in the inRracing News Challenge for my pick up and race. Finally the Radical after driving it last night and have fell in love again.

Numbers can be low but after driving her last night I've got to try and put another season in with her. Monster of a car.

I assume that iRacing is best suited to a racing wheel setup instead of say a xbox controller? If so, what is the reasonably priced wheel of choice?

Would you drive your real car witha xbox 360 pad ? If you did you recon it would work well? If not pick up a DFGT or a g25 g27, best starter wheels that dont cost the earth.

DFGT with g25 pedals is one of the cheapest and best combos you can use on Iracing the worlds fastest Alien huttu uses this combo.

I'm going to be driving the McLaren for the most part I think. Probably in the Grand Am, since I own all but two of this seasons tracks. I will probably do some GT races as well.

I notice the first race of the Grand AM is at Spa, which is good because I've done plenty of laps during last weeks 24 Heures Du Fun, but an 80 minute race could be a big ask for me. It's going to mean a mid race pitstop for fuel and tyres, which I've never done before. Also I don't know if my backside will hold up for over 80 minutes in my chair.

I plan on racing the GT cup with the MP4 and maybe the Skip Barber some weeks. I'll probably drive the MX5 every now and then since I could never abandon that car.

Almost got Class C :)

Lol im thinking the same. Another con for me I've not drove many laps at SPA yet. So need to practice. Ive not done a fuel change since the radical 120minutes race at brands hatch few seasons back...

Any Ideas how many minutes you can get out a full tank ? from the MP4. I used 29.9gal for the 50 minute race I did at road atlanta last week. No idea how much fuel was left but she mad it home.

I'd advise you to not race the Skippy yet not for a good while Learn the MX5 and MP4 for now. Get good with these cars learn them on every circuit. Once you get a grasp of all the tracks and a few seasons under your belt by all means try the skip. But be warned it has road tires that make her a beast to drive fast.

Im over a year in and Im still yet to race her. She will take dedication to do well in its not an arrive and drive car from what I can make out. i could be wrong ask Skill im sure he drives it.

When I was doing the 24 Heures Du Fun I was putting 24 ish gallons for a 20 lap race and I don't think I got the message that I'd only got 5 laps left. Those races were around 45 minutes long, so I reckon 45 gallons in total for an 80 minute race should be plenty.

The MX5 can feel a bit boring after driving cars such as the MP4. Its a good car but a bit easy. I was practicing in the skippy earlier and managed to do a few clean laps on it with a decent time but it is definitely difficult.

MX5 may feel boring but I promise you enter one of the advanced rookies series and you will find the MX5 has a very strong field. Finding half a second in a car like the MX5 takes lots of practice. Theres no way in the world in just a week you have mastered the MX5.

Also you will learn things in it that carry over to the GT style cars. The skippy and SPR require a different approach and driving style.

Week 13 and a full season race grid = different kettle of fish.

No way have I mastered it and I agree that they are really good for close racing just enjoy some of the other cars a bit more.

I was reading about that, it seems its better to either go one route or the other with cars. Either cars such as the Skippy, Star Mazda(whats that like? :p), etc or with cars such as the MP4 or MX5.

I watch a few videos or read about a car and I want to buy it just to try it for myself. Probably not the best idea.

You are trying to sprint before you have learnt to crawl, Slow it down a bit mate I-racing is going to become frustrating and costly for you taking this approach.

First of all I would just race the MX5 in either of the cup races you have open to you. InRacing News Cup (roadster) or the Iracing grand Touring cup, both these series will cost you £0 to compete in and run a full 12 week calendar. Once you have competed a full season in either or both move up to doing a proper C class full season. Myself I will be doing the Inracing News Cup this season but if you prefer the cup drive the Grand Touring Cup I dont have as much experince driving the cup but I'm sure I can get up to speed and help you learn that weeks track.

The next stage would be driving something like the KIA, Mustang or the MP4 I find the Mp4 very easy to drive and noob friendly even down to the setups Its a GT3 car so the setups are very limited in real life. Iracing mirrors these allowed setups *though we can get away with certain front and rear setting combos which are banned in real GT3*

Nothing stops you driving the Mp4 this season if you can make C class quick enough. But get a proper 12 week series in before moving up to a primary season at C class 50-80 minute races well its a whole new ball game.

Few seasons back at a track at Mid-Ohio I had a 3 way battle with Two regulars in the Radical series that started on lap one and finished 45 minutes later with the 3 of us separated by no more than a second. I was drained after I came off. Learn to drive side by side at a pace thats not going to make you feel like you have just ran a marathon. From what I have seen of your driving you are pretty good as far as you pace goes. You managed to stay pretty close to me when I was running just off my race pace so should be good for some nice finishes in both the MX5 and the MP4.

As far as progression goes for now go with road racing you have so much open to you.

The MP4, Radical, V8(the best sim car in any game apprently built with the help of some of V8 actual pro drivers) - HPD, Caddy, KIA , the soon to come BTCC Honda Civic which I'm sure a lot of us here will be driving.

My route was this MX5 > Radical *which i still drive to this day* > Lotus 79

The open wheel series you only real route is.

SPR as its free > Skippy > Maxda > Lotus 79 > F1

Thats a learning curve that will make a grown man cry. each one is enough to make you pull your hair out. You will be much better off learning the tracks driving road cars that do what a road car does, then once you have a few season under your belt learnt the tracks, the lines the car setups. Knock yourself out and go have some fun with the open wheeled series.

But beware cars like the Lotus 79 and the F1 have 600000000000000 billion setup combos. To get fast in this style cars your going to need to known how to set one up... I drive the Lotus 79 and I can not for the live of me drive the alien setups I have to have my own setup that I change each week for each track, or use one thats very balanced by another driver.

You have only just started to scratch the surface of what it takes to be fast in iracing. Take time mate its much more fun that way.

My 2 cents:p

Anyone up for some laps in the MP4 tonight we can try a race fuel test Murray seems up to speed in the Mp4 and i think he has both of this weeks tracks. Laguna and SPA I think we are at. My old friend peter would also be up for running with us so should be able to have a nice 4 -6 man train running round :D

Time for me to pull my finger out and buy a new wheel, been saying it for ages but other things keep taking the money i save for one, and im getting way behind on new cars and tracks they keep adding, its going to cost me a fortune to race when i get a new wheel, more than likely going Thrustmaster T500 or a GT3 or CSR from Fanatec so be a while till i can scrape together the cash.
