No way have I mastered it and I agree that they are really good for close racing just enjoy some of the other cars a bit more.
I was reading about that, it seems its better to either go one route or the other with cars. Either cars such as the Skippy, Star Mazda(whats that like?

), etc or with cars such as the MP4 or MX5.
I watch a few videos or read about a car and I want to buy it just to try it for myself. Probably not the best idea.
You are trying to sprint before you have learnt to crawl, Slow it down a bit mate I-racing is going to become frustrating and costly for you taking this approach.
First of all I would just race the MX5 in either of the cup races you have open to you. InRacing News Cup (roadster) or the Iracing grand Touring cup, both these series will cost you £0 to compete in and run a full 12 week calendar. Once you have competed a full season in either or both move up to doing a proper C class full season. Myself I will be doing the Inracing News Cup this season but if you prefer the cup drive the Grand Touring Cup I dont have as much experince driving the cup but I'm sure I can get up to speed and help you learn that weeks track.
The next stage would be driving something like the KIA, Mustang or the MP4 I find the Mp4 very easy to drive and noob friendly even down to the setups Its a GT3 car so the setups are very limited in real life. Iracing mirrors these allowed setups *though we can get away with certain front and rear setting combos which are banned in real GT3*
Nothing stops you driving the Mp4 this season if you can make C class quick enough. But get a proper 12 week series in before moving up to a primary season at C class 50-80 minute races well its a whole new ball game.
Few seasons back at a track at Mid-Ohio I had a 3 way battle with Two regulars in the Radical series that started on lap one and finished 45 minutes later with the 3 of us separated by no more than a second. I was drained after I came off. Learn to drive side by side at a pace thats not going to make you feel like you have just ran a marathon. From what I have seen of your driving you are pretty good as far as you pace goes. You managed to stay pretty close to me when I was running just off my race pace so should be good for some nice finishes in both the MX5 and the MP4.
As far as progression goes for now go with road racing you have so much open to you.
The MP4, Radical, V8(the best sim car in any game apprently built with the help of some of V8 actual pro drivers) - HPD, Caddy, KIA , the soon to come BTCC Honda Civic which I'm sure a lot of us here will be driving.
My route was this MX5 > Radical *which i still drive to this day* > Lotus 79
The open wheel series you only real route is.
SPR as its free > Skippy > Maxda > Lotus 79 > F1
Thats a learning curve that will make a grown man cry. each one is enough to make you pull your hair out. You will be much better off learning the tracks driving road cars that do what a road car does, then once you have a few season under your belt learnt the tracks, the lines the car setups. Knock yourself out and go have some fun with the open wheeled series.
But beware cars like the Lotus 79 and the F1 have 600000000000000 billion setup combos. To get fast in this style cars your going to need to known how to set one up... I drive the Lotus 79 and I can not for the live of me drive the alien setups I have to have my own setup that I change each week for each track, or use one thats very balanced by another driver.
You have only just started to scratch the surface of what it takes to be fast in iracing. Take time mate its much more fun that way.
My 2 cents
