Is the MX5 the new Mondeo?

see I can see the appeal, but I'd buy a caterham if a budget weekend toy was an essential accessory, or a z3 maybe if I had to camp it up a bit as seems to be the growing trend.

Yes, but you can't drive an atom or caterham daily. Well, I would but I just love to mince.
I work 5 miles from home, don't need refinement but I need to be warm and need a convenient roof in winter. For £1500, can't grumble.

Sorry but a Z3 is every bit as gay as an MX5, if not more so. :) :p Nothing says I love man meat more than that long phalic bonnet.

Lol ok, seriously I like the MX5 but if it was in a Disney film about Mazdas it would either be pink, female and the RX8's girlfriend or blue, male and the RX8's girlfriend...

Some cars look masculine some look feminine, the Ford Mustang is masculine, even in pink with silver star decals people would think "what's she done to that man car?" as opposed to "girly car". On the flip side the new VW Beetle is a girly car, if people saw one in black with flames down the side and skulls and machine guns on the bonnet it would still be a feminine car with manly mods.

MX5:

Cheap to run
Fun
RWD
Reliable
Convertible
Beautifully balance and adjustable chassis
Loads of performance mods / options

I quite like the fact some people are put off by the image, otherwise everybody would have them.

Everyone is just looking for "summer" cars and cheap fun.

Plus it's clear the motors forum is just one giant closet. I love man meat and I'm not afraid to admit it. It's about time we all sat in a circle and encouraged each other to reveal their true selves.

**** this thread, I'm outta here

You drive a Toyota Corolla right?

But seriously, so do i. I also drive an Mr2 turbo (now) have driven my mates MX5 MK1 on the hills, plus ive done numerous race days including Palmer Audi with single seater and ferrari days too. Plus VXR day.

Honestly, my corolla is one of the tightest vcars ive ever driven. It is quite fun when you want to thrash it and the handling is okay.

You drive a 5 series BM right? For a start, the engine is in the wrong place and the car weighs 200kg more than it should if it has any serious sporty aspirations and the centre of gravity is too high.

So what difference does it make if you own a BMW or a Corolla, it doesnt make one opinion more valid than another, and throwing that out there to try and discredit someone who you disagree with is pretty childish to be fair.

I don't really see the 'Gay' in a MX5 myself. The only thing I can see counting against it is it being a small, drop top sport car, in which case I've got to ask are all small drop top sportscars similarly gay? What abut a Lotus Elan? Triumph Spitfire? MGB Roadster? Austin healey?

When did things goes wrong in this country to the point where a man can no longer enjoy a nibble, fun to drive convertible without having to worry about his mates taking the **** at the pub. The British sportscar industry was pretty much built off of the back of such cars.

My thinking is that worrying so much about the opinions of other men to the extent where it prevents you buying the car that you want is the hight of gayness ;)

Bum bandits!

The good things about the MX5 are:

Fun
Lightweight
Easily available parts
Cheap parts
Can fix many things DIY on your drive (for instance my mates leak/dampcarpets upsetting ECU situation).

Honda S2000 = expensive parts, highly stressed engine worth probably £2000-4000? You can probably pick up a used 1.6 or 1.8 for an MX5 for about 500£ or less? And a cheaper gearbox too...

Honda S2000 is a specialists car, the MX5 is mass market.

I been thinking about getting a mx5, as the lotus exige now sold I'm really missing a fun car, bad idea? I know it's a massive drop but that's life.

I dont think you can buy a ghreat one that isnt going to need some work. My mates P reg was about £1200/1500 ish ic ant remember and that has needed a few bits of work to fix a cracked spring and some other bits as well..i certainly wouldnt go much older/lower down the chain than that if i wanted a cheap experience.
