ISIL, ISIS, Daesh discussion thread.

"Speaking amid tight security at the Vatican on Saturday night, the Pope said: "Let us not allow darkness and fear to distract us and control our hearts."

Is it only myself who sees the irony in this? :)

How many migrants has he put up in the Vatican I wonder?

Seems like a bog standard Pope statement.

Wheel him out, make a cut and paste speech about a world he is totally disconnected from, then back on the enbalming fluid till the next time.

Yeah. The Pope is about as much use as an Arab in a boozer with a special on the pork scratchings. Platitudes and cliché is all he's good for. He should spend more time in the slums dishing out food to the stricken, at least then he could make a positive impact. And What's with the pope mobile and that bullet proof glass? Surely the hand of god would deflect any bullets. Guess his faith is lapsing. Sorry for the rant, just felt like a pope bash. :D

God helps those who help themselves.

The problem with the West getting involved, no matter how just, is that it's seen as the infidel killing Muslims.

Yup and everyone has the same problem. Saudi , Russia , turkey and more are all nearby and suffering the same problems but darent make a full go of it because of the huge costs involved and whatever other agendas they have.

Everyone needs to be in it together and that has its own problems .

'The world' could get rid of Isis but it isn't willing or able to do it in a way that suits everyone. That could become a huge problem as things unfold .

It took the death of thousands of American civillians and the destruction of a national symbol to get things started last time. Whatever it takes this time won't be pretty :(

Looks like we might be abandoning our support of the Yinon plan as Boris has praised Putin's decision to intervene in Syria and its outcome.

Congratulations Assad and Putin:

Seem to be doing more than Obama and Cameron in the war against ISIS.

Must be a nightmare militarily :( doesn't seem to have been covered that extensively in the media where it seems to be portrayed more as a conventional military victory - they'll largely be dealing with a mess of mines/IEDs/booby traps, snipers and suicide bombers and once the military starts to build up there to use it as a staging ground for Raqqa, etc. they will probably have to deal with frequent suicide and hit and run attacks.

Its not really in the western media's interests to show this as a victory as Assad has been portrayed as the villain, so there is nothing positive in anything he does, ever.

I find it interesting how our 'free' press selectively edits the news to fit their agenda. Just shows that we should always be critical of evidence presented to us.

Also, not sure if this has been mentioned but this whole mess could have its roots in oil/gas: http://www.thenational.ae/business/energy/qatar-seeks-gas-pipeline-to-turkey#page1

Putin didn't want the pipeline going through Syria, thus decreasing the value of Russian gas into Europe. Having Assad in his pocket allowed this to happen. Western Europe therefore had a big reason to get rid of Assad and the Arab Spring seemed to provide a perfect opportunity.
