ISIL, ISIS, Daesh discussion thread.

Looks like the proxies we and our allies have spent sooo much money and effort on are gona start getting killed now, good news for the Syrians lets hope the Yemenis get similar help soon.

Well if the country wants any progression or freedom at all they better not end up with an islamic government, eh?

That's not answering the question but how much progression or freedom have the Syrian people enjoyed under the Assad regime? I'm feeling lenient, so I'll allow you to exclude the civil war period so you don't need to worry about the barrel bombs.

Problem is, you have to choose from the factions that exist, not from those you'd like to exist.

There is no faction in Syria that will bring peace and prosperity to all, overnight. A lot have said that Assad was more progressive than his father, at the very least. In fact his supporters even accuse him of being a soft touch, compared to his father.

Progress in Syria will take a long time, no doubt. But it will go backwards under an islamic regime.

What other choice is there, realistically? You want us to depose Assad, and replace him with who, exactly?

You can bet most of what you own they aren't only bombing Isis either. They'll target opposition rebels first, and any Isis who are stupid enough to interrupt.

The situation is now highly dangerous. We now have the West and Russia in active military conflict zones with oposing interests.

Russian parliament unanimously approves use of military in Syria to fight ISIS.

About time :)

Isis aren't in Homs.

Putin has thrown a spanner in the works, we won't be able to go into Syria and illegally overthrow Assad under the guise of protecting civilians now, months of wall to wall media coverage about Syrian refugees all for nothing.

I love the fact that Fox news tries to paint him as the new Hitler/Stalin type when he's actually a London eye doctor who was forced to go home and inherit a country due to family deaths lol.

considering the mess the US has made in the middle east over the last 50 years (and still ongoing) they hardly have a leg to stand on when criticising Russia.

Why do we have to choose anyone? Sometimes doing nothing is OK.

Dropping barrel bombs doesn't really sound like the behavior of a "progressive" leader to me tbh.

'Forced to' lol. Also lol @ the idea it's unfair to portray him as an awful person, given the brutal methods he's used (which includes before this conflict even started).

Various sources agree he's now more popular then ever, among his own people (not the foreign jihadis that make up a large % of the rebel forces).

It's also funny how pretty much all ME governments have ruled with a strong arm. And how when they're removed, these places almost always dissolve into chaos. Tribal conflict and ethnic cleansing, etc. And then end up with new regimes that are just as oppressive, and a war-ravaged country (only now their country's most lucrative resources belong to western contractors). We've never actually helped matters when we've removed these people directly or supported insurgencies.

I guess this time it will be different. You know what they say, twelfth time's the charm!

Russian aggression is what the west needs in syria, I wonder if the Americans gave russia the full go ahead to do whatever they like in syria via their back channels... Russia will do what the western public will not allow western governments to do....

Who gives a monkey's what the UN says anyway. It's not like they have their own army to stop countries doing whatever the hell they want to anyway...

So the whole concept of international law is made a mockery when you have sufficient force to do what you want ;) At least we can stop pretending to be the world's moral authority.
