ISIL, ISIS, Daesh discussion thread.

I might be wrong but I think the difference is down to the scenario - in Iraq they were rising up within a country that was beginning to settle (atleast in some form) and largely the population poorly supported them and ISIS used terror as their primary weapon - there were a number of cases where Iraq forces numbering 20-40K retreated from a mere 200-2000 ISIS fighters.

20-40k? Between 10-20% of the entire Iraqi army fled, together?! Hmm

why is the independent using the Syrian observatory for human rights as a source?
Syrian Observatory for Human Rights

organisation of 1 guy who lives in coventry sitting at his pc lol

waste of tax payers money, maybe I'll jump on the next bandwagon and set up an organisation.

seems the EU gave him some money too

Iran observatory for human rights seems like a good bet

Some people take Alex Jones to be a reputable source. Armed with that information, I think any of us could go to be "well respected" sources.

There is something quite odd about seeing in parallel people going about their daily business as if nothing is going on while a few 100 meters away buildings are exploding and emergency or military personnel are going about their business.
See it all the time. It still freaks me out that they do that though. Sad really.

So no ground assault still.

Turkey and Russia are still battling it out in diplomatic talks, there is going to be an other face to face meeting on the 17th.

In the mean time, Russia plans to open safe corridors out of Idlib and promote local reconciliation between groups that wish to rejoin the government.

On the ISIS front, the SDF have took more ground from ISIS while SAA are still mopping up ISIS around deserts.
Instead of regurgitating twitter feeds (we can all read them), why not post your personal view on the matter?

Have you seen his sig?
Do you reckon he reenacts the battles with his dolls?

Most of the twitter type feeds have had pretty much non-existent coverage of Syria the last 7-10 days (aside from the odd mention of regime helicopters dropping barrel bombs again/occasional Russian airstrike).

Are you suggesting IronWarrior has another source for information beyond that what is posted in social media?

You confused with fighting ISIS. No one is fighting HTS other then SAA and their allies.

The SDF and Americans are 1000's of miles on the other side of the country and Turkey is in the north who have setup forward observation posts all along the edge between SAA and them. Not a single western country has ever done a airstrike or conducted any sort of military operation against them during the Civil War.

Are you suggesting a western country should? And in by doing so, impinge on widely dominated Russian skies, risk hitting the wrong (Russia/SAA) unit and further outright conflict with them too. Hmm, OK.

If you're trying to use me of derailing, this is the TLDR on how it went: Somebody used a conspiracy theory relating to the MH17 shootdown to trash talk alleged Russian actions in this thread via false equivalence. I responded by pointing out that what they were saying in this thread didn't happen the way they thought (in their defence they were posting shortly before the facts around the incident had been established and I was posting shortly after so assumptions were all they had to go on) and that the conspiracy theory they were referencing was significantly less plausible/logical than the simpler more factually supported one. A second poster then started pushing the same conspiracy theory claiming incorrectly that it was just as plausible, and I tried in vain to explain to him that was factually incorrect.

I do agree it's annoying when threads divert temporarily albeit on connected discussions, however I genuinely believe that conspiracy theories should be challenged when presented, as not doing so and leaving them unchallenged is how misinformation propagates.

Not a conspiracy though :) I'm sure the data will be revealed when it can be.

A takfiri is a Muslim who accuses another Muslim of apostasy. The accusation itself is called takfir, derived from the word kafir, and is described as when "one who is a Muslim is declared impure."

So yeah, isil are often referred to as takfiri, but it's a general term for anyone regarded as above. The link that they're referring to isil in particular and that they are therefore US backed is reaching at best.
