Since Assad uses non-precision bombs without any kind of collateral damage restraint, yes it would be fair to say they are "less nice".
I highly imagine that most people just want it to end and the rebels have played their hand weakly enough that they have no choice but to continue to fight, getting the support of a large majority of the populace is hard enough in democratic nations... least of all this.
Ignoring that, lets open up the statement that people oppose him... of course they do, they live in a tribal mindset in a tribal culture, and he's going to have enemies based purely off of that (didnt really work out for Libya).

rebel mortars are highly precise and never killed anyone, the suicide bombers are martyrs.
and ofcourse the side which is clearly winning is the one using chemical weapons when it would make no sense from a strategic standpoint.

In fairness so does Theresa May but they aren't running around the country with heavy weapons attacking police/soldiers/civilians
When the enemy are setting up their mortars/artillery on top of residential buildings and firing onto civilian areas there isn't really any difference between using guided/unguided munitions in response, the collateral damage is going to be high.
The problem is sadly that if you stop responding then the insurgents know all they have to do to be safe is make sure their human shields are big enough.

Or a well armed, well supported, oppressive regime (who you also think are way more developed in every way than NK). Everything except weapon designs, hence why NK has ICBMs/nukes and Syria doesn't. Which is more a matter of necessity as NK is sanctioned up to the eyeballs whereas Syria has always been free to buy tanks/planes/etc off whoever will sell to them so never needed to develop their own, and nuclear weapons/power isn't an option as Israel will bomb anyone in the area who even hints at nuclear ambitions.
Well technically is is the rebels/ISIS, realistically it would be retarded for the regime to do it when they are winning outright and all eyes are on them, that would be shooting themselves in the foot big time (not saying that they didn't, just that it does make less sense).

It's sad, but it's also how it works, every single time.
The only difference here is that the US is knowingly involved and not like with the various groups throughout history (Majuhideen for one, multiple in Central/South America and South/Aast Asia) is that once their job was done, the CIA would literally just stop caring, no support, no money, nothing.
The issue here is the US is visibly saying to people "Do not work with us, we will watch you die".
