ISIL, ISIS, Daesh discussion thread.

We? No the Media did and no doubt entirely for propaganda purposes.

No we the audience, we the people, we the ones who tuned in in our millions and paid for it?

Shock and awe was the first invasion I've seen that had live reporters on the ground watching the missiles land in the enemy capital

And we haven't exactly been back have we?

Eh?

What do you mean? We made a couple of tv series and films (generation kill, jarhead, American sniper etc) and had it on the news pretty much 24/7 for a decade.

The Iraq war had a longer run than friends

What am I missing here? https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-leeds-45534483 this guy - allied himself with a group that Turkey is mostly opposed to then goes on holiday to Turkey? I mean I don't support the Turkish position on this but it seems pretty braindead on his part to me? Bit like the VW executive who went on an annual family holiday to Florida when there was a warrant for his arrest over the emissions scandal, etc. in the US and was surprised they arrested him.

Yeah was pretty stupid of him, I mean if you're going to do something in a legal grey area like that then either keep quite about the whole thing - don't go broadcasting your name all over the media/facebook etc.. or don't go to countries where they'd quite like to arrest you for it given they now have your name!

You'd think a grunt in the UK army would be slightly intelligent or something.

You've watched a few too many Hollywood movies there - grunt is a US term.

So? He was a grunt, and still seems to want to be one. He's gotten the sweet sweet reward of no one giving a **** because's a poor mans mercenary. Quite frankly if Hunt (Johnson in that case) can't save a mother from the Iranians but saves this guy... i won't be amused.

I wonder what deal we'll make for this grunt to get him off his stupid mistake, more ass kissing for Fascist Erdogan? Maybe let him take a **** in #10?

If he was a medic by trade then actually he was a "pogue" rather than a "grunt" if you want to insist on using US terminology you've picked up from Hollywood movies...

Its just a bit cringeworthy that's all.

Maybe coz of the movies I dunno but I've heard it used by those in the UK military - usually in a derogatory context when someone has messed up.

Nah it isn't a derogatory term, so that wouldn't make much sense. I don't doubt that it is adopted/used from time to time, it simply refers to an infantry soldiers, if anything it is the terms for non-infantry types that are sometimes derogatory.

I mean the context I've usually heard it when I've heard it used by UK military tends to be when they are being derogatory - literally word for word for instance "dumb grunt got a face full of shrapnel".

Yep and still the propaganda churns every day in comments I read online, "the kurds were the enemies of iraq" I was told today. amongst the old classics such as "iraq had no wmds"

I guess this is why everything seemed to have stalled... is it me or does it seem like Turkey are shielding Al-Qaeda?

EDIT: hard to find a reliable outlet for the current news :s

Whole world is shielding them, especially the US. Make no mistake, Al-Qaeda can change their name many times and rebrand themselves, but Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) are the ones in control of Idlib.
