ISIL, ISIS, Daesh discussion thread.

Ding ding surprise a former British Guantanmo Bay inmate, who David Blunkett assured us was no threat when he was released, has fled to Syria and is fighting for the Islamic State.

The British govt at the time also gave him £1 million in compensation. Which is rather a lot more than the average soldier with limbs missing etc.. gets.

Even more bizarre his wife went over to persuade him to come home and then had a complete faff trying to get out of the country - ended up having to be assisted by al nusra (al quaeda)

Oh and Shaker Aamer (a Saudi Citizen) is going to be released from Guantanamo Bay to the UK in 2 weeks... because he was a British resident prior to being captured and handed over to US forces in Afghanistan (obviously over there innocently on his holidays during the US invasion). He was approved for release to Saudi in 2007 and 2009... even though he was not a British citizen his family and others in his community have heavily criticised the UK govt for not doing enough to free him... despite senior British politicians lobbying over his release over the years. Oh and the reason the US didn't want to release him to the UK - they consider him dangerous and aren't confident we'll monitor him sufficiently.... which it seems they might be quite right about.

What makes you think Islamic State will be next? A strong Islamic State is key to Russia/Assad's strategy of winning the war.

Lol, stopping ISIS is the main reason Russia got involved in Syria (if it had just been Assad vs US backed rebels they would have just stood by and watched the US win like in Libya). They don't want ISIS gaining more strength because Syria is relatively close to Russia borders and they don't want Christian hating nutjobs with an army that close to them.

It's amazing how many Muslim women go to the Islamic State to try and bring their husbands, boyfriends, brothers back - but why do they always take their kids with them?

I think it was more, went to join her husband, realised it was a bit **** and then came back.

That's what I was getting at ;)

Just scanning the 'Fail who are claiming Turkey have shot down a Russian jet who incurred into their airspace. The report seems to be based on nothing but social media comments so hopefully it's not true. In what might be considered by some to be an omen, I was driving just now and Nena's 99 Red Balloons came on the radio

When they say "their" airspace, do they mean, over Turkey or over part of Syria which is currently Turkey? That could play a part in Russia's response. Also do we know for sure it was Russian and not Syrian/Iranian?

Unconfirmed reports claim a Russian jet was shot down by Turkish forces

That's some quality reporting lol.

It has been claimed by eyewitnesses that there was a large explosion in Huraytan, northern Syria, while three fighter planes were seen overhead.

And if true that is very very very very very bad. Fighters are very fragile, if it came down in Syria it was shot down over Syria.

A direct hit yeah but a lot of the portable anti-air systems are designed to detonate in proximity and cause disabling damage through fragmentation which can bring the plane down but not necessarily immediately - more intended to force the aircraft to leave than necessarily destroy them.

Guys, I wish Russia was in Syria/Iraq to destroy ISIL, but I don't think they are.

They just want to help Assad back up in to his seat which will indirectly affect ISIL and it also comedowns to oil.

This wasn't the article I read last week, but I just did a quick Google. Last week I read a great article on what ISIL and their interpretation of Islam is, and why the Russians are in there.

Basically, its Oil. And what's good for Russia isn't good for the US. Which is why they disagree on Asad.

There is also the aspect that Syria (geographically) provides them with logistic capabilities for their navy (and hence they'd want a friendly Syrian government) without having to expose their forces to the bottleneck of the Turkish straits where they'd be extremely vulnerable.

Access to warm water ports and the open ocean has been a big issue for Russia for a long time, though not so much these days with the heavy air lift capabilities, etc. otherwise over the years they'd have been better positioned to become far more of an economic power house than they have.
