Italian Grand Prix 2012, Monza - Race 13/20

Yeah Williams and Force India run their 3rd drivers on Fridays a lot, but but it's at the loss of a session for a race driver which can have an impact. I think that while the testing ban has helped cut costs, it's done massive damage to the driver development process and F1 is going to suffer for it.

And for smaller teams to catch up.
It jsut means the large teams can outpace even more, using expensive wind tunnels and other techniques.

Should have more dedicated in season testing.

I just find it poor, Spa was a lot less exciting because we lost Alonso and Lewis at turn 1, it just lessens the show if the top cars are sitting by the side of the track, as a F1 fan I would much rather see them all on track racing for the win.

I agree that it ruins the race weekend, but I can see where others are coming from.

The WDC last season might have been more interesting if Vettel had a few more DNFs. :p

In fact, 2010 was a great season in terms of the battle for the WDC precisely because the top cars and drivers were all a bit unreliable.

Last season the WDC was wrapped up early because the car, the driver and the team were practically faultless.

Maybe they should just tweak the Friday - make the morning session 1 hour & have 1 car from each team which has to be their third/reserve driver and 2 hours in the afternoon for the race drivers as normal.

I wonder if Sky will get FatJohn in to do the GP2 race co-commentary? :D:D

He will watch the race, then deny he watched the race.

When asked what happened he will just say "zee start.. Go and zee end. Boom"

Last time I checked RB and Ferrari spend about the same as they used to. If Indycar teams can have multiple test sessions throughout the season on a $40m, $30m, or even $10 million budget then what's stopping F1 teams doing it? Without in-season testing, Bourdais would still be trundling around in 20th and Briscoe wouldn't have had an engine upgrade that helped him win a race.

Last year they gave Lewis the wrong setup I just hope they get it right this time.

I need alonso and vimto to dnf :)

You're forgetting that Lewis also forgot to press the loud pedal at the same time as everyone else after the safety car. :p

Joking aside, they gave him the set up he needed for the race they thought he'd have. He didn't have that race.

Following what happened in Spa and some of the lame comments about Sir Jackie Stewert, I think some people should set to record this documentary on BBC4.

In the 60s and early 70s it was common for Grand Prix drivers to be killed while racing, often televised for millions to see. Mechanical failure, lethal track design, fire and incompetence snuffed out dozens of young drivers. They had become almost expendable as eager young wannabes queued up at the top teams' gates waiting to take their place.

This is the story of when Grand Prix was out of control.

Featuring many famous drivers including three times world champion Sir Jackie Stewart OBE, twice world champion Emerson Fittipaldi and John Surtees OBE, this exciting but shocking film explores how Grand Prix drivers grew sick of their closest friends being killed and finally took control of their destiny.

After much waste of life, the prestigious Belgian and German Grands Prix would be boycotted, with drivers insisting that safety be put first. But it would be a long and painful time before anything would change, and a lot of talented young men would be cut down in their prime.

This is their story.

'Something was terribly wrong. I loved the sport, but it was wrong. I prayed to God whether or not to continue.' - Emerson Fittipaldi

'It made me angry. The sport was way wrong.' - Sir Jackie Stewart OBE

Personally would love Alonso and Vettel to collide for the next two or three races - would then make both championships a lot more interesting lol

Webber would still pull decent points for RB, Massa would still lounge around in 11th.

Only got fortunate at Spa due to 4+ contenders infront of him being taken out.

But also Webber is a little way behind Alonso and even Vettel currently, and he could be beatable at Monza by the McLaren's and possibly the Lotus of Kimi (even if Alonso/Vettel came together - I can but dream lol)

That would require Vettel to start behind Alonso and catch him up. In the list of Things That Aren't Going To Happen, it's pretty near the top.
