Italian Grand Prix 2013, Monza - Race 12/19

It really doesn't matter who the best driver is, it's all about how good your over all package is like driver/car/team for the last 4 years RB have had the best package. Ferrari have 2/3 the car just hasn't been good enough to challenge for pole position and race wins. Mclaren have been so poor i really did question Hamilton's decision to leave for Mercedes but he proved me wrong.

Sam Michaels joined as a Sports Director (so not even the same field) and well before Paddy left too.

News today of Kimi is now signed for Ferrari.

No way will he move over for Fernando. Will end in tears. Also leave Ferrari in a bad place in a few years when both of their drivers are very old

For starters he will do whatever his contract says, secondly who cares about age, they will just pay for whoever is the best at the time. Just like they did when ms retired. They will probably then just hire vettel or whoever else is flavour of the month.

I've read a few people saying this but when has he actually said it? He seems quite happy at RBR, why would he move to a team where he may not be the main driver?

Because he is eyeing Alonso's seat when he leaves.

He's dropped the usual "everyone wants to drive for Ferrari, it would be great to drive for them" hints.

Hehehe. I'm going to give you a full and thorough explanation.

All the top drivers drive for Ferrari.
In the late 80s and early 90s, the 3 big names in F1 were Senna, Prost and Mansell. Prost and Mansell both drove for Ferrari and I have no doubt had Senna not died prematurely, he would've driven for them at some point (even if it were just 1 year).

In the mid 90s, MSc was BY FAR the best driver in F1. The most accomplished. This guy was regularly lapping his team-mates, no matter who his team-mate was. He won the titles with Bennetton, who were the best at the time. He then moved to...you guessed it...Ferrari. A team which had not one the title in almost 2 decades!

Currently, the best driver in F1 - Alonso. Who does he drive for...you guessed it Ferrari.

Are you beginning to sense a pattern?

Ferrari are synonymous with F1 and motor racing...more than any other team. Ferrari also get paid more money from the FIA than any other team in F1.

In Italy, there is a daily sports page dedicated to Ferrari. No other F1 team has a following that even comes close to Ferrari.

My sister - a typical person who knows little about F1. If I were to ask her to name a team in F1, the only name she will come up with is...you guessed it...Ferrari.

If you are a footballer, you want to play for Man Utd, Real Madrid, Barcelona or AC Milan.
If you are a race driver, you want to drive for Ferrari (just as Vettel said).

Phew...
:p

Fair enough. I'd understand that. But would you move if RBR has the fastest car on the grid? Especially if it meant you were not getting titles as a result.

Could have saved your keyboard and just posted that, tbh :p

RBR is a bubble that will burst. As soon as they stop winning they will be gone, the team sold, and things will change.

Ferrari is a constant. They have been in F1 since year dot, and for the most part have been competitive.

Gotta disagree with most of that. I mean to start off with, your examples have got some holes. The big name mentioned is Senna and he never drove for Ferrari, while Mansell and Prost only had relatively short stints there (although Prost was fired). All three of those guys did however drive for McLaren and Williams, the top two teams at time. For Schumacher, was it the brand Ferrari that got him to jump ship? Or was it the fact that all the key staff of Benetton's championship winning engineering team were moving there too? Alonso too, before considering Ferrari, was about to make a home at McLaren and signed a multi-year contract with them, but we all know how that turned out.

I don't agree with the football equivalency either. Generally sportsmen are all after one thing above all else - personal glory. Football is entirely a team game, there's no individual trophies handed around, so naturally they want to play for their country and the big ticket teams. They want to score the most magnificent goals, and earn the most money, and they want to raise the trophies too.

In formula one they want to win the WDC, they want to win monaco, they want to win their home GP. I'm not going to deny that Ferrari is alluring, but it's never going to top the desire to bring home the trophies.
