Italian Grand Prix 2013, Monza - Race 12/19

He is known for not getting enough tyre temperature, which I would say is much more likely to be a cause of poor qualifying than saying he can't set up a car.

It's not just vocal though is kit, due to nt setting the balance up too his liking he is a poor qualifier, which makes his race a loot harder, this is where he falls down. If he could set the car upto his liking, we've seen he can qualify and his race pace and tactics is excellent.

2010 Jb qualified on average 2 places behind LH
2011 1place
2012 3 places

This is because he can't set up the car how he likes, and when it's not set up how he likes, it is far more than just him being vocal. His driving suffers.

Agree.

Also at Canada 2012 they had the same car\same brakes ect Lewis finished 1st button 16th.

The next race will be won by Lewis in style ;)

Yeah, the "Jenson can't set a car up" thing is ridiculous.

Since he has been in a competitive car he has won the WDC (in his first season in a competitive car).

In 2010 he next moves to another "competitive" car and as expected didn't out perform his team mate as he was getting used to new surroundings/factory/people/personnel and last but certainly not least, a completely and utterly different car... factor in that Lewis had helped and been developing the '10 car way before Jenson even signed for Mclaren...

Jenson then goes on to utterly trounce Lewis in 2011 and was Vettel's only rival in the last 5 or so races...

In 2012 he had a shaky start but when the car got better at the half way point he was getting consistent performances in the top 3 etc. (or did Belgium for example in 2012 show evidence of his apparent inability to set a car up?)

Lewis would not be doing anything different this season imo, at all. The car is reprehensibly to blame for this season's misgivings.

The thing with Jenson is that he is more vocal about the balance issues with the car than a lot of other drivers.

And yet if a top team had race seat free and the choice between Hamilton and Button, well you know the rest.

Jenson is the most complete driver in F1. But this in no way means he's the best, or the fastest.

If a team wants an ambassador for them, Buttons the man. He's brilliant with the press, brilliant with the team, and is pretty handy at the wheel of a car too. He isn't going to sulk in interviews like a spoilt child, call his boss stupid over the radio, or wander off to his boat after a race ignoring everyone. He's a team player and a nice guy and very much an all rounded driver.

He's not the fastest, or the most ruthless, or the most consistent. But the drivers who are carry failings in other areas.

I really hope JB goes into media when he retires from driving, he has the skills and personality for it.

Someone needs to have him sectioned. Its beyond been a fan of Button now.

I was one of the few Button fans on here prior to 09, yet Smr makes me wanna hate him ;)

If we think it's bad just imagine what his poor son who he named after him will have to go through. Justifying the name with made up tales of races. :D

I'd be amazed if Brundle now thought Jenson was the more complete driver than Alonso. I can't see how.

Alonso is faster when the car is supreme, can drive around car problems and qualifies better than Jenson even when the cars struggling. What exactly would Jenson be better at than Alonso. Many manufacturers have said Alonso's ability to adapt to tyres is the best as well.

Hamilton would have got far more out of that Mclaren this year as he has the Mercedes. I took a punt that he would do better than Jenson and it's coming true. I imagine if Hamilton was still in the Mclaren this year he still would have won a race and been in the front 3 rows consistently. When JB is stuggling the gap would have been even bigger this year.

Do you really think a driver in F1 for that long doesn't know how to set up a car  Really?

It's been said of hakkinen and Kimi and both of them won titles. Hence why kimi especially was always on or off the boil at Ferrari. If he turned up and the car was fast from day 1 he was awesome, if it took some work he went missing.

Hakkinen was well known for having very limited tech knowledge and it was always touted as one of the reasons they kept and used DC for long.

I dont think, even Lewis with all his talent could stick this years McLaren on the top step.

Yeah plenty of people on here said that about his move to mercedes this year. I reckon he would have won a race before the season ended. He certainly would have had more opportunity starting 3 rows further up the grid than Jenson each race weekend ;)

+1

Surely, even with the lack of 'development potential', McLaren would have been better off with the 2012 car?

Doubtful, if you look at it simplistically the fastest laptimes would indicate things are faster this year still for McLaren, just not by as much as it is for others.

For example, this year's Italian GP, McLaren's fastest lap was 1.27.8 vs 1.28.4 last year. A 0.6s improvement.

However the overall fastest lap went from 1.27.2 last year to 1.25.8 this year, an improvement of 1.4 seconds.

McLaren's car is performing better than the 2012 car if you look at it simplistically like that, just not better enough compared to everyone else.

Exactly. The 2013 McLaren is faster than the 2012 car, but by not enough compared to the advances made by the competition.

Driver of the day hands down to Hulkenberg. I'd love to see him in the Ferrari next year or the Lotus. I'm starting to get a little bored with Vettel's dominance this season. Last year was exciting because Alonso and Vettel's battle gripped you right to the end. This year it's clear that unless Vettel suffers a string of DNF's it's his to lose.

Roll on next year. :(

Hadn't thought of it like that – very interesting. :)

I'm not sure Lewis could get anything more out of the '13 McLaren than Sergio or Jenson currently are TBH. I think they're both pedalling it as fast as it can go.
