It's funny how (fuel shortages)

Forcing a deadline would result in the poorest being substantially hit as their vehicles would be worth nothing. I say poorest due to the prices of BEVs being high currently as well as charging infrastructure for flats/high rise being non-existant with little promise of that being resolved

The government won't ban the USE of ICE cars for a long time, if ever. They will naturally just stop being used with the exception of classics/enthusiasts

The government is ploughing millions into charge points for flats and rented accommodation from next month. they have completely re-structured the grant away from private home owners. There is some decent money available for those that want it.

Decent money? The grant is capped at £350 and the cost of installing a point for even a small block of flats will make that £350 look like pocket change.

Take my flat for example. How much do you think it'll cost to run an electrical cable from my parking space, into the building, up to the second floor where my electricity meter is? That's going to require tearing up the tarmac and some substrate to lay cables, which will then need filling in.

That's before you even get to the building or even factor in getting permission from the lessor. I bet £350 wouldn't even cover the cost of installing a suitable post to attach the unit to as my space isn't next to any sort of wall.

The £350 is the old scheme and like I said, there is a new scheme starting next month. The freeholder of a block can get £850 per bay up to £30k per property, if only the infrastructure is installed but no charger, its £500 per bay. No it will not cover the entire cost but the more bays that are installed, the cheaper it will be per bay.

ICE cars was consider the future, but now EV will challenge that view:)

Because of new electric vehicle charging innovations coming out one was Lamp-post charging and all you do is pay with a mobile/card, so no need to have home charger go into flat:) Or wait within the next three to five years when 1,000km – more than 600 miles – on a single charge EV's batteries will come out with Swiss start-up Innolith revealed its own EV battery innovation.

I could drive my EV all day only stopping for food/comfort breaks and getting exactly the charge needed during that time, but most days I set out with all the range i need and it costs me a fraction what it used to cost me to run my M240.
How do the running costs compare? Say it cost you £60 to fill your 240i with vPower - what would it cost in electricity to get the same range?

On a EV tariff, probably about £7 for 300ish miles. Depends on the car though, some would be more like £10-£11.

Servicing is lower but how much lower depends on the brand.

Ironically the nostalgia/desire to keep ICE cars has done nothing but pushed prices up significantly, lol.

Mainly it's the lack of used stock that's the issue which is being caused by a couple of factors:
  • People that would normally change every 2-3 years are keeping their car for financial reasons so not trading in.
  • Low availability of new cars along with extended lead times due to component shortages meaning some people who do buy have to hold onto their current car until the new one arrives. This was normally a max of 3-4 months even for a full factory order but has increased significantly due to supply issues. This causes the Part Exchange to be out of the market until the new car arrives
This problem won't go away quickly as, due to low numbers of new cars being registered caused by extended lead times, there will be a low number of these cars available in 2-3 years time when new car customers typically renew and their Part Exchange enters the marketplace. (I hope that made sense )

V power is worse case for fuel really, I ran mine on standard and my M240 averaged over a little under 35mpg in the 50k miles I had it, which by the way is amazing for a straight six 3 litre engine! So £60 today would buy you 36 ltr (@1.65) and 36 ltr would take you about 275 miles. All a little rounded but roughly correct.

My Tesla charging at night on Octopus 5p rate (I think you can only get 7.5p now) gets 7kw x 4 hours so costs 1.40 (7 x 4 x 5p) for the 28kw's it gets in that time. That 28kw charge takes me personally 105miles, so bit of maths later that same 280 miles is about 76kw of power (better in the summer) which equates to £3.80 for me. Even at newer 7.5p rate that would be £5.70

If your going to get super technical and need that range of 280 every day, overnight you would charge and be jumping between both rates, so to get 76kw in i'd need 11 hours, 4hrs x 7kw @5p (1.40) and 7hrs x [email protected] (7.96) Total £9.36

Worse case still and you use superchargers which are equivalent of motorway petrol service stations for price really and it would be 77kw x 42p (that's what i'm reading it is now on the motorway) = £32.34 Verses £59.40 it would have been in fuel in my M240. You can go round in circles with this calculation as in real terms you only top up on superchargers, but you get the picture :)

* gets ready to have his figures torn apart :D *

/edit. I really made all that more complex than it needed to be on reflection, my model 3LR is doing roughly 4 miles per kw, so the cost is miles / 4 x whatever you pay per kw. Its no rougher a calc than mpg on a car, the round trip of 80 miles since last plugged in yesterday for example returned 3.77 miles per KW.

Wife just sent me this headline from the DM asking whether she should go and fill her car up. I actually did top mine off yesterday because I live near the coast and I've known the local garage to be empty at Easter with all the people coming down for the day.

I've been out again today, all the local garages I drove past had fuel and there were no large queues.

This is the sort of stupid scaremongering headline that causes shortages!

I bet their parents are proud :p

just picking up a previous post Feek

Then I wave at you when you're parked up at a charging point, 250 miles later when I've used about half a tank.
Was that 250 miles of driving searching for an open fuel station with fuel in stock :p:cry:

open fuel station with fuel in stock :p:cry:
hahahahaha :D

That's something I noticed during the 'shortages' before. The local garage from us stayed open all the time, even if there was no fuel but they didn't turn off the signs. As a result there was a constant stream of cars driving in, realising all the pumps were covered and driving out again. If they'd just switched off the signs then that would have been much better. Of course, they do it in the hope that punters will stop, go inside and buy a scotch egg or a ginsters sausage roll.

punishment Isn't it quantum of solice where he dumps the guy in the desert with a can of oil,

Never been a daily mail reader - good click bait stuff for social media - as commented earlier adult media bbc/c4 sensibly don't seem to be covering it much & pouring petrol on the fire.

Good old DM its been trying to stoke panic buying for days now like one of those blokes you used to see walking up and down the streets with sandwich boards stating "The End is Nigh!". Bless 'em. The public havn't quite got on board yet they'll have to try a bit harder everyone's a bit weary after the last session.

These eco people are a bunch of hypocrites, they hate oil but how much stuff are they wearing that has used oil in order to make it, how about how they all got to the area, they must have used oil in in some way in order to get there.

Absolute bunch of pathetic low lifes that are nothing but terrorists. About time the police treated them as such and dragged them away.

tried to get petrol today but all the local petrol stations had run out, rip

those people need taking out to sea and throwing overboard

It's a chew on.

Seems to be just the way it is now, goto a fuel station with your fingers crossed. Sign of the times. Are we still world beating in stuff?

Still a few year off being able to afford to change from fuel myself so will just have to keep on driving around with a crystal ball.
