It's too hot :(

Yeah, another good nights sleep here. Okay, I am actually curious as I don't really get it. Maybe don't post specifically to answer, but next time you do post you can let us know, are you -

A) Just can't afford an air conditioner
B) Can't justify the expense of AC for 'just a few days of use a year'
C) Don't have the space for AC
D) Morally against AC due to environmental damage
E) Something else
F) Yes, I have AC and the last few days have been just fine thanks.

Just curious :)

I have two portable AC units that are nowhere near as effective as built-in units. But the sole reason I don't have built-in units is due to cost, it works out to roughly £1000 per room and I would need to install it to a minimum of 4 rooms and I don't have that kind of money. Having said that the AC unit in my bedroom did its magic and I had a decent night's sleep, a built in unit would have been a lot less noisy and the temp would have fluctuated less but it's a heck of a lot better than just a fan

Anyone else in a new build house?
They're great in winter, but my god they trap the heat in weather like this!
I fear tomorrow night will be even worse :(

We have a new townhouse and the 3rd floor master was sitting at 30c but downstairs study was 24c so we put a spare mattress on the floor and had a pretty good night sleep.
Walking around on the top floor felt like we had underfloor heating (we don’t).

Opening up the loft hatch to let the heat escape didn’t work at all, if anything it felt like hot air was coming in so I closed it.

Probably going to put the AC on tonight to cool things down. Got a 12K unit in the garage I’ll bring inside.

D and a bit of A but due to the electricity cost and its mostly my missus.

Me? I'd get one in a heart beat.

I think the missus would be kind to the idea if we had one hooked up to some solar panels and basically run it for free!

Tbh this is a rare thing ,I would rather experience and cope with this short heatwave rather than shut myself indoors with aircon trying to make every day the same
The issue with aircon is when you go outside things feel even hotter, you get used to the aircon and then struggle to cope without it. Clearly it is great in bedrooms and many houses especially new builds really are dangerously hot upstairs without it. Well insulated boxes are all good until you cant extract the heat or cant stop the heat entering with external shutters.

Don't need AC and slept fine without it. Won't consider ac until we have solar installed but even then it seems a frivolous purchase for me. I get why some need it, but for us as a family we cope fine. Even the kids slept fine. I can't overlook the environmental impact either.

Once you get used to the temperature AC just creates more issues as your body is constantly having to adjust between hot and cold. Acclimatising is more effective IMO. It's not for everyone I accept that.

E) Not sure if I could get a unit set up properly (the hose). I have turn and tilt windows in my flat so they either tilt in from the top or they’re wide open, hinging in from the left hand side.

And I'm talking about proper Aircon, not those portable units with a pipe out the window.

For most people, it’s the storage. Hence my theory of fans always sold out in hot weather. People sling their fans at the end of the summer. Or keep them for another year, have a summer when not used the fans. Then sling them out.

If people kept onto their fans, only a few shops would sell out - not ALL of them

My tower fan is 18 years old and kept behind the bedroom door when not in use. Hardly close my door over.

The fan used by my parents in their study is 32 years old. Remember going to John Lewis in Peterborough for the preparation for the hot summer of 1990. Keep their fans in the gap between drawers and window

Did look into getting ac but quotes were around 5k, guess this area is just a ripoff. Have a few jobs like that which could use doing but I'd rather just move house so I don't want to spend on this one.

Room temp over night. But I slept alright tbh.
