iTunes Match is live...

Working ok on my pc, iPhone and iPad.

Am I right in thinking I no longer need to back up any of my music as I can just download the whole lot again when ever?

Mine only finished around half 1 this afternoon, having left it going all night. Thats 6k unfound songs uploaded and 8k songs matched! 21.5GB uploaded

iTunes Match

If you want the benefits of iTunes in the Cloud for music you haven’t purchased from iTunes, iTunes Match is the perfect solution. It’s built right into the iTunes app on your Mac or PC and the Music app on your iOS devices. And it lets you store your entire collection, including music you’ve imported from CDs or purchased somewhere other than iTunes. For just $24.99 a year.2

Here’s how it works: iTunes determines which songs in your collection are available in the iTunes Store. Any music with a match is automatically added to iCloud. Since there are more than 20 million songs in the iTunes Store, most of your music is probably already in iCloud. All you have to upload is what iTunes can’t match. Which is much faster than starting from scratch. Once your music is in iCloud, you can stream and store it on any of your devices. Even better, all the music iTunes matches plays back from iCloud at 256-Kbps AAC DRM-free quality — even if your original copy was of lower quality.

The price is awesome, for a service where you can import an album and it detects purchases made and then puts them in the cloud.

I'm sure I read somewhere that iTunes Match was removing music from i-devices and relied on them streaming to play, is that correct? I bought a 64Gb iPhone just so I could keep my entire library on there (with the 'reduce to 128k' box ticked). I don't want my music removed.

It seems a strange thing so I hope the report I read was wrong.

I didn't think it streamed but rather downloaded a copy to the phone so you would still need the free space for it to go on?

Will be great for when you want a song or album when out or about

Just tried asking Apple Support some questions about Match but they say it's not supported in the UK!

I love the idea of match but it has got it's downsides

- Converting songs to 128kbps when loading onto my phone does not occur when Match is enabled on the phone.

- Some of my own custom music says it has been matched but my music is NOT on the iTunes store so how can it have been matched? How do I make it upload my song to iCloud instead of using whatever song it seemed to think matched?

I hope some of this get sorted out.

It deletes everything so you then have to download (or presumably sync) to get it back.

Streaming is only available on pc / mac.
