I've just watched the Premier League Champions elect at Anfield

Nok - RVN is a great player (and he looks a lot more interested playing for RM than he did the last two seasons at Man Utd)

Will always be a little frustrated at how he left OT, Fergie may not always be right - unfortunately he had to go at that point

Today is not the day for insensitivities to liverpool fans but tomorrow i'd like YSMN to get in here and prepare to suck it up ;)

Whoops, I put this year in my OP. I meant next year :D. To be fair, it was one of those threads where you could make a post and then sit back and watch the show ;)

Joking aside, Arsenal were flying at the start of the season and looked miles better than United. To an extent they still do play more pleasing football to the eye than United but have suffered a horrific dip in form at just the wrong time.

Fair play to the guys down the East Lancs road who will pick up the league this year. You're still rubbish though :p

I guess as Utd only got two points from the first three games - I think we were 17th in the league at one point - even Man City where flying high

Laughs at "they still play more pleasing football on the eye"

Dont get me wrong - they are equally good at entertaining (albeit in different styles) - but one isnt markedly more entertaining than the other

Gerrard and Carragher were sublime today and are both more important players to us than Torres.

who's your most important player now? only thing that still has me leaning slightly towards gerrard is that if a team can successfully contain him(ie United) then it isolates Torres and really restricts his threat.

Gerrard is still our most important player. Imo he's had a season just as good as Torres' just as a striker Torres will always get more praise. 21 goals and around 19 assists (assists according to Pigeon) is amazing,

Gerrard is our most important player, not only is he our best performer but he's an inspirational captain as well.

Torres has been more influential than Carra this season but to be fair this is one of Carra's worst season in a few years, if they were the same age and I had to lose one of them, Torres would be the one to go.

I wouldn't say Carra has been poor but you're right when you say he's not been up to the form of the last 3 years. I don't think switching to rb and switch cb partner has helped. Especially early on when Hyypia came back into the side, Carra had to do a lot of covering for Sami. Saying that after Sami settled back into the side i thought he was the better of the 2.

As for Carra or Torres: Even if Torres was 30 and Carra 24 i'd still take Torres. Putting the ball in the back of the net is the hardest thing in football and we've got one of, if not the best striker in world football atm. In Skrtel and Agger we also have 2 great replacements for Carra too which we don't have for Torres.

I'd agree, Gerrard has easily (and I mean that) been your best player. Torres has done well at sticking the ball in the back of the net, but the rest of his game has room for improvement - it's definitely coming though - he's a much, much better 'footballer' now than he was at the start of the season.

Funny you say that as the one area i think he could get even better is his finishing.

He's very quick, suprisingly strong, good in the air, has a great touch, works incredibly hard and the ability to go past people. Had his finishing been better (especially earlier in the season) he could have over 40 goals by now. Im not exaggerating when i say he could have scored 6 in the game away to Newcastle (missed 6 very good chances) and another 3 or so when we played Sunderland away.

He could improve his finishing, he reminds me of Adebayor where he wastes a lot of golden opportunities. But when you see how players like Tevez/Ronaldo etc.. work, there's room to improve. A good example would be RVN in his first few seasons.

Im not sure what you're getting at

Im not sure what aspect of Tevez's game that Torres could learn from other than work-rate and even then Torres does his fair share of closing down etc. And Ronaldo plays a different position to Torres.

As a striker i think Torres has pretty much everything; pace, strength, movement, good in the air, first touch, can go past people, creates goals for himself and others and like i said above he works hard too.

He's not as natural in front of goal as a Fowler or RvN but to compare him to Adebayor is a bit harsh. His finishing is very good, in fact i can't think of an established striker in the EPL better than him, but that is the aspect of his game that he has greatest room for improvement and the greates priority.

He does need to but 7 in 15 starts (+ 2 late subs) away from home isn't bad.

As for Adebayor, all that shows is he doesn't shoot often from 20+ yards. I know who i'd fancy to put a real chance away much more than the other and it certainly isn't Adebayor.

Im still not certain if Adebayor is an average player who had a good start to the season or if he is a good player going through a bit of a slump.

As for Torres, I think he has to be the most inform striker in Europe at the moment. Not sure if it's fair to compare Torres and Tevez as their strengths are completely different. For a start Torres is a better out and out striker whereas Tevez is a better 2nd striker

When the chips are down and you need help, there aren't many players better than Tevez around. I've never seen a player work so hard since a young Roy Keane. He chases and chases and chases until we get the ball back, his hold up play is as good as you'll ever see and he can pick a pass too. He's also bagged around 18 goals which isn't bad considering he had no pre-season and is sacrificed for the 4-5-1 too often. He's also the king of important goals; Roma, Lyon, Chelsea, Liverpool.

If you look a little deeper those away goals it doesn't make such impressive reading. One was against a 10 man Inter side, 3 against a weakened Reading side, one in Marseille, one against Derby and one against Boro. Overall though he has been fantastic for Liverpool but he needs to improve away from home especially in the big games.

Adebayor's main problem is his erratic finishing, recent weeks he has missed some golden chances but this is his first season for us as a starter and he didn't have a great time at Monaco either. Interesting fact is he has more away goals than home goals this season and more often than not in the big games (especially away) he does put in good performances. He is young and improving, he has shown great improvement already this season and a bit more composure and strength will put him right in the top tier.
