James Cameron's 'Avatar' - The next gen of cinema

Says the guy who has seen it 3 times.

I only paid to see it once ;) I wasn't turning down free sweets and popcorn and drinks :)

I enjoyed the 3D and effects more then the "film" itself.

I thought the film was alright > good in places, the effects are what made the film. Which is a great shame.

I'm still not sure which will look best to be honest, Avatar or Disctrict 9, could probably put King Kong in there as well, infact any other "good" looking modern film ;)

Half of the enjoyment of Avatar is seeing it in 3D I imagine it's just very good looking in HD.

I mean you're not going to sit down in your living room and watch this film on a massive projected screen with 3D glasses on and with awesome surround sound.

That's half of what makes this film such an enjoyment.

So? The DVD isn't even out yet, this entire thread is a discussion about the cinema version and how well it has done.

You can't dismiss it's achievements solely because the enjoyment is partly to do with the cinema environment.

Exactly, it's the incredible cinematic experience that people are paying for, I've certainly never experienced a film like this at the cinema before. In 2D at home the film would certainly lose a lot of it's edge.

This is the reason I disagree with people using the "inflation" thing to move avatar down the list, that would only be appropriate if people were paying £14 a ticket to see it in normal cinema, which they aren't, there is a perfectly valid reason for the increased ticket price.

Edit: Of course general inflation still applies.

So that's a description of pretty much every film ever then. The Bourne Supremacy was a whole lot less awesome when I saw it on a 15" CRT then it was at the cinema too.

No.

The Bourne Supremacy was a decent film, but it wasn't in 3D and wasn't quite as "epic" in scale.

You could for example use Lord of the Rings as an example, I saw them in total 10+ times at the cinema and watching them on my panasonic viera isn't quite the same.

Some films are better expirenced in the cinema, Avatar is an example of this and it's what makes the film so enjoyable.

Watched this last night. Awesome film, just absolutely epic.
Sadly I saw it in 2d as we had missed the last 3d showing of the night. But will be going again later in the week to watch it in 3d!

A very good looking film, not bad at all...

however certainly an over-hyped film big time, it wasn't as amazing as everyone makes out, not a patch on films like the lord of the rings.

Just been to see this at London Imax and wow!

I think of myself as a bit of a film buff and was worried that I wouldn't like this due to simplistic plot or hollywoodism etc...but it really took me by surprise.

Its the best cinema experience I have ever had (not the best film) At times i thought I was actually in the jungle, amazing!
