James Cameron's 'Avatar' - The next gen of cinema

Its the first 3d film i have seen and it did make me sick as a dog after, pounding headache and just felt rough had to go to bed in the end for a few hours then felt fine.

lol. you should probably have an eye test
Not really, this is a common side effect of subconsciously trying to force your eyes to focus on elements which are significantly behind or in front of the point of convergence. It's the largest problem with stereo 3D in my opinion and the cryo wakeup scene right at the beginning is a perfect example - try to focus well into the background and receive painful eyestrain

I just got back from watching this in 3D. I thought it was a good film, not great, but then only a handful of films deserve that accolade on my definition.

I don't think the 3D element lent itself to the film in a particularly positive way. It wasn't a hindrance, but I had issues with certain elements in some scenes appearing out of focus, when it was quite obviously supposed to be part of the 3D effect. It was as if I could see the individual layers which make up the 3D effect, and that they were slightly out of phase.

Stunning visuals and a satisfying storyline easily make up for that though. I want to see more of this world Cameron has created; The translucent, bioluminescent flora blossoming in a kind of spiritual rainforest, and the fantastical fauna, create a sort of utopia. Especially if you aren't particularly fussed about advancing technology, and are partial to the simple, technologically primitive way of life.

Yes please, let's have a sequel.

I just saw the film and i really liked it. The effects were fantastic.

I kinda felt like i did as a 7yr old after seeing StarWars.

Just saw it in 3D. It was epic. A classic James Cameron action movie :)

It has raised the bar very high. Higher than even The Matrix did back in 1999.

Meh, average film at best. I hadn't seen a single advert as I never watch them for films to try to not ruin them as most ad's tend to show most of the best moments.

So I knew VERY little going in and what little I had heard had actually given me a very different picture to what I thought it would be.

But story wise, my word how dull, the military who just over react and want to kill everything, the corporation who think making enemies to go after the biggest concentration of ore will somehow yield the best long term results, the soldier who turns out to have a heart and decides to help in the end? Whys that not a spoiler? because I was just describing about 482 separate films that aren't Avatar.

The main guy is a horribly bad actor, the tall skinny guy alongside him has never been in a good film, Ribisi is actually quite a good actor but is barely in it, military guy put in a completely generic military guy performance.

I'm still finding it funny people get away with having a group of "aliens" who are tribe based and animalistic and everyone they get to portray them are black people.

Action, meh, acting, crap, script, poor, story......... completely and utterly generic. The world itself was painstakingly created, felt large and real, if it had way to many "we've put that in just to stand out on 3d despite being silly" things added. Cameron can create a world, and effects to turn a very good film into a great one, but unfortunately he wasted all that time and effort turning a pretty mediocre film, into a "okay" film and really wasn't worth the time.

The first Matrix was fantastic, idea, originality, the effects were actually fairly basic but suited the idea's in the film perfectly, the fantastic look/effects in the film turned a very very good film, into a great one. The next two films were just dodgey as heck, despite "better" but massively overused effects to a stupid story that made no sense.

Great effects can enhance a film to be marginally better than it was, but they don't make that much difference and if the rest of the film simply isn't particularly good, no effects will turn it into a great film.

The simple thing of it is, other than being entirely predictable and generic, its not a film that will drag people back to watch it for a 5th time years down the line, its simply not good enough, not even close.

My prediction for a sequal is them making a human avatar which is conveniently a spitting image of Zoe Saldana and sending Jake and Neytiri to Earth to broker a deal to end hostilities. It then becomes a romcom as they explore our planet with Neytiri concluding that we are a deeply flawed race but ultimately good. Hope I'm wrong though because it sounds rubbish.

If I were to be in the business of movie making, my chief aim would be to inspire emotions. I fail to see what's strange about that.

More in terms of people frothing at the mouth when someone suggests they didn't really enjoy it that much - I don't think Cameron himself would defend the film as much as some here!

i guess you are a big Eastenders fan! :p

But is it not the same story with every well exposed film? Stranger is it still to highlight this one as an exception.

In any case, I don't believe it's simply the film that most are defending.

By and large they are not emoting, they are being fanatical. The original of the word "fan", as you are no doubt aware.

Still showing no sign of slowing down in its eighth weekend

Given Titanic made its total in 250-odd days, and Avatar is only 60-odd days in, I wonder how long the cinemas will keep running it and what the eventual total will be :)

Depends I suppose, if it shows no sign of slowing down then I guess they have no reason to stop it being shown, would be interesting to see if it can hit 3 Billion
