January 9 Launch Date for AMD Radeon HD 7900

If the 22nd Dec mini launch is right expect them to bee extremely expensive and in short supply.... I'm trying to get in as much overtime/oncall monies in so i can pick 1 up at the end of jan... :)

Altho being oncall over new years eve/day is gonna suck :S

I dunno, depends on the stock cooler. I always like to wait a few months for the custom cooler versions to come out. They offer better cooling and smaller size cards too. Also Zalman have just joined the game too, interesting to see their versions.

I'm trying not to splash out on a credit card and just pay for it when i get the funds at the end of jan... but i bet i end up putting it n the card to get it a bit earlier... >.<

Let's wait and see! :) OCUK prices will be what they think they can get away with. No doubt everyone's will be if it is limited stock. Supply and demand and all that good capitalist stuff!

Nope, that seems about right.

If AMD come up with the world's fastest GPU they will want paying for it. It's a new model so they'll want paying for that too. If it's faster than a 580 they'll know it, and they'll want paying for that too.

*sigh* seems I was right again. I mean, why wouldn't I be? I only base my opinions on 30 years of experience.

Ain't no such thing as a free lunch, money talks and BS runs the marathon.

Better get your credit cards out and start swiping.

You only base this on experience and it seems you were right.

Every single launch of gpu's disagree's with your viewpoint, and I see no £500 7970 cards for sale anywhere, so you haven't been proven right at all.

Again, quite simple, the 4870 beat the 260gtx, yet launched basically £120 cheaper, not 5% cheaper, that was closer to 50% than 5% cheaper.

The 5870 was 60% faster than a 285gtx, yet it launched at, £300, while the 285gtx was £350.

Please explain from your 30 years of experience when the new gen has factored in performance and been that much more expensive than the previous gen. IE new gen is 70% faster and so cost 70% more.

Thought it was closer to 500, reading between the lines of gibbos post.

Not to be rude to Gibbo, its his job why wouldn't he, but if you think you'll get 30 cards in on Dec 22nd, if you convince everyone they are looking like being £500, then you put 30 on the site for £450, you WILL get 30 idiots rushing to buy thinking they've got a bargain.

Now tell them its £350, and put 30 on the site for £450, and the same 30 people will think they are being ripped off....... and 30 other idiots will still buy at £450 :p

People need to get their stories straight though, first its "if its 80% faster, it WILL cost 80% more than the 6970" so that would in faultless logic ( ) account for it being £500. But then other people are telling you it will be 20% faster than a 580gtx........ so why would it be £500. You've got two groups of people talking about rumours, all making no sense, and coming up with completely different reasons for stupid prices, none of which have EVER occured in GPU pricing before.

AMD has been steadily increasing their prices with every generation as they have gained back some of the ground they lost from the fantastic nvidia 8xxx series. The ati 4870 was cheap and full of promises of equally cheap future gpus to easily fool stupid fanboys like drunkenmaster. The 5870 was around 350( it was 300 for like a week only ) so I expect the 7970 around 400-450.

AMD chips have also been getting bigger. The 4870 was based on a 256mm2 chip, the 5870 was 334mm2 and the new chip closer to 400mm2 with TSMC rumoured to have increased the price of wafers. You also need to factor in currency changes- been Irish, graphics cards were A LOT cheaper over the last few years as the Euro increased in value.

4870 was cheap because you could get 2 dollars to the pound.
