January 9 Launch Date for AMD Radeon HD 7900

I wouldn't get too exited about getting hold of one:

Now, it looks like the Radeon HD 7970 will launch on December 22, 2011, bringing a Christmas gift to all the current AMD users and those that want to become one. This will be a very limited launch, with the real availability only coming on January 9, 2012 - which should be the launch date for the Radeon HD 7950.

All this takes me back a few months, Beleiving all the slides and performance charts.

AMD this, AMD that, Then they released it -

Bulldozer,

Nuff said.

How does a processor relate to a graphics card? Surely its two different departments that make these two different components. They just come under the same company name.

One of those slides shows PCI 3.0, please say these cards are going to be backwards compatible with PCI 2.0! Wonder what the real life difference between the two is.

It's compatible with 2.0, infact the cause of it's delay was problems trying to get it backwards compatible but they've sorted it out now.

Sounds like these cards will be very expensive if it's a very limited launch on the 22nd. I'm curious to see how well this stock cooler does as well...

I'm trying hard but, all the leaked benchmarks for Bulldozer were...... not great? Am I missing the point where AMD showed benchmarks where bulldozer destroys the 2600k, or where they said it was twice as fast as a x6? Because, I'm not remembering any of that, at all.

The single DVI connector could be an issue for me. Does Duel link support 2x1920x1200?

Nope, dual link supports higher resolutions on a single monitor.

You should be able to use an adapter from one of the other connections.

Whether or not you'll need a passive or active adapter will no doubt be revealed when the full details of the cards are revealed.

With the 6xxx series cards I think you only need an active adapter if running 3 screens so hopefully a cheaper passive adapter will work for 2 monitors on the 7xxx series.

If theres a card that is around £200 (my last 6 have been) and a 20% faster than what i have 6950 (unlocked) i will buy it, i also have to factor in water blocks so any GPU costs me £80 more...but if for a change i can get a decent cooler from the off this will be another "saving"

hmmm Duel link (or maybe just DVI in general) also allows you to split one DVI to multiple monitors I have used this in the past but resolution has been limited, but again I had used it on older cards x800 series I think, I believe it was one res down from my native.

My monitors do have vga/dvi/hdmi anyway, so it is just a cable I recon. I do intend to run my TV through this system if I ever get round to wall mounting it. I think I'm looking at display port adapters at this point.

Dual link allows 2560x1600 at 60hz on a single screen.

I think it also has a max of 1920x1080 at 60hz for triple screen setups. With an active dp adapter.

I'm thinking of getting a 7990 after saving a few months.

Which is best 7970 CF or one power card say from previous cards like the 6990-6970 CF

Cheers

As a HD5970 user, the best solution is always to go for two separate cards. They produce less noise and have better overclocking potential, with the obvious disadvantage of taking up more slots and usually costing more. However, my decision was based upon other factors - notably that I couldn't support two dual-slot graphics cards at the time.

After the complaints about noise on the HD6990 I'd wait for reviews before jumping at any follow-up.

Anyway, I hope these cards offer decent performance. If they do I'll be looking to sell my current card and grab one of these, though my current card has lasted two years and offered great performance.

Averted disaster yesterday!

Almost ordered 2 x 6950's yesterday before running into the thread and other sites. I cant believe what they're saying but I will wait and see, faster bus, lower power consumption, double bandwidth with xdr2 - I will only believe this when I see it...

Putting back my upgrade until late January.

Takers on the 22nd are likely to pay a massive price premium
