January Transfer Rumours

Theo Walcott going to Arsenal would be just as pointless as him going to chelsea, Wenger is never going to risk playing a 16 year old kid in an important match, the best thing he could do for his own development is either stay where he is or got to a smaller prem side where he will see some football. Look how much Rooney benefited from his time at Everton and how much players like Pennant, jeffers and Johnson haven't benefited from playing in Arsenal/Chelsea reserves.

I agree.
For his own development he would be better off with a smaller prem side - similar to Robbie Keane a few years back.
However thats not going to happen when Arsenal are putting big money about.

He'd certainly get more games in the English cups, but he'd be way down the pecking order for the big games - out of the 4 forward spots (strikers/wingers) at Arsenal, I'd say there'd be at least 8 players ahead of him in the queue.

While I'd like us to sign good players, we have such a hideous excess of attacking talent that we just don't need a player like Walcott, when money is tight and there are other areas of the team which need attention.

If he's going to be as good as Wenger thinks then I think we should get him. I believe due to his age he can only sign a 3 year deal so I expect he would actually have to play. It also depends on which players leave in the summer, Bergkamp will, and then possibly either Pires or Ljungberg or even both. Of course he still won't be ahead of Henry, Reyes, Hleb, RvP, and Adebayor.

I'd like Wenger to sign a Defender who could play across the who line, perhaps in a similar way to Toure can/could.

Yeah, then he went to Arsenal and they ruined him same as they did Wright :)

Jeffers Glass ankles ruined Jeffers. Wright, he just ruined himself, if he had stayed for one more season he would have been first choice.

I can see Bergkamp and Pires leaving, wouldn't like to see Ljungberg go though. I reckon we have enough backup to the other 6 forwards in the shape of Quincy, Lupoli, Bentley and Smith. Dutch fans can't believe how few chances Quincy gets at Arsenal, so I have to explain how low down the pecking order he is behind all the others. Haven't seen much of Bendtner but he has a good record in the reserves/youth. Yes, Walcott is arguably better than all of those, but they are only backup players at the moment.

Indeed, I really wanted us to bust a gut to try and get Carragher in the summer before he signed his new deal. Then again I've wanted a high class proven defender ever since Keown left.

Still, at least we've brought in a target man and "the new Vieira" during the window, so at least some of my concerns have been rectified. I still reckon our forward line has as good a depth as any team around and we really should be looking to strengthen other areas though.

Bergkamp is certainly off. Pires seems to take longer each season to hit top form, he's playing well now, but it's Jan already. I can't see Bentley ever playing for the club again, he has more or less burnt his bridges. I want Quincy to suceed, but I just can't see it in all honesty, I think it will take him too long. I see him very much as an impact player coming on as a sub.

The new Vieira has been very impressive in training, but only time will tell, I find it odd that he has played so few games for Auxerre.

Vignal is nothing outstanding however he is a reasonably steady player , I would much rather us have kept him and sold Traore

He only rarely got a game at Liverpool

Can't remember much about him tbh,i always had him in the same bracket as Smicer, can play alright but too lightweight.

It's not £12m up front though. Arsenal offered £2m up front, Saints wanted £5m.

I reckon Saints are just playing hardball because Chelsea are prepared to pay more. However it seems the player would rather move to Arsenal due to his idolisation of Henry and worries about his career stagnating at Chelsea in the way it has happened for other English youngsters like Johnson, Bridge, Parker and SWP.

Interesting thing about how much we have offered upfront. This deal has to be based on games and success or we might end up with a raw deal here but I think our board might stretch upto £4mill.

I like the fact he seems to prefer us over Chelsea, nice to see he isn't buying into this Wenger ruins English talent thing, it is easy to play that card when you aren't good enough for a team.

Also we won't have the problem of whether he will settle into the English lifestyle and he plays in a rougher league than the premier league and is doing well so the away days to Bolton shouldn't bother him. This is why I think Wenger is willing to pay a bit more for him. In 4 years time this kid probably will be out of our reach so might as well go for it now. Scary to think that 10 years from now he will be at his peak!

I think the rumours that we are after Rosicky might signal the end for Pires and maybe even Freddie. Freddie is a fine player but whenever he finds form he breaks down with injury problems. Had a good game against Boro though which was good to see after his recent poor form. I said it back in 2002/2003 when we played Ajax and I'll say it now, Chivu will become a top defender and we should sign him, he really is a good player and I think he would do great for us.

Bergkamp has been a great servant for the club but he should have retired a year and a half ago but still it will be fitting that his last match will be at Ashburton Grove, he played a big part in us being able to get to that stadium with his performances over the years and he deserves it.

Some rumours of interest in Joey Barton by multiple clubs. pearce would have sold him after that pre-season nonesense allegedly but the chairman loves him.

City wanted richardson, and with him not liked at OT, esp if its true he had it off with anton ferdinands girl which annoyed rio a rumoured swap deal could be true.

Realy hope this is a wind up, really dont want him anywhere near the club if the stories about him ive heard are anything to go by,

Who, Barton or Richardson?

I'd take Barton, Richardson is a donkey, desperate to see him away from my team.

Well there were stories about Pearce wanting Richardson last week. Now some rumour interest in barton from a few clubs with us possibly being one. So saying a swap could be a possibility as Richardson is one that would be available IMO.

Other rumours for utd are Diarra in the summer is getting more likely and lyon want silvestre the clown so maybe a deal there. Ballack wanted Juve but they havent offered what he expected to is talking to others again.

Well it looks like I'm wrong yet again ;) It seems we have raised our offer to £5mill rising to £12mill. I think that is reasonable and worst comes to worst he won't cost us a fortune

Ive heard that Inter are after him.
If it wasnt for the fact that we need defenders and not midfielders, i'd have him at Milan. He'd be a good squad player! :p

Yup agree with you fully on that one, a real class act and is still at a relitive young age. Would love to see him play for Arsenal and I think a firm offer could easily secure him!

He was prety ok actually with the right could he could have been better than any of the fullbacks we have now, he can play both sides of defence too.

For us it looks like Le Tallec is going the same way,how many players did houllier destroy :(

I think Le Tallec's attitude did that. He may have been good at U19 level in world youth championships etc but that didn't give him the right to be so arrogant and demand first team football in a new country and league. If he had got his head down like flo po and trained well but not moan then he probably would have got lots more games than he thinks.

After all the crying he did to get a loan move away from Liverpool last season he cried to get back, again he cried to get another loan move in the summer and he got it, within a month he was complaining about the style of football that Sunderland play.

I think that he will definately be off in the summer, rafa just does not rate him nor like him for that matter, same as Cisse really, all for himself and not the team is what Rafa thinks.

My guess is he was brought through by Guy Roux who had a reputation for developing young talent in his 40+ years as manager of Auxerre (side note: must be a great way to stamp your authority on a player... "listen sonny, I was managing this club before your DAD was born, never mind you..."). Santini replaced him in the summer and you know what he's like, falls out with players, and generally not that good at club level as Spurs fans will tell you.

Looks like Theo will be on his way somewhere then, wonder if he will spend the rest of the season on loan back at saints? I honestly think he would be better off siging for Arsenal and spending the rest of this season and next season at saints with a manager like burley (provided he doesn't get sacked/quit!) it would aid his development a lot more than playing Carling Cup football. All this talk of Arsenal playing youngsters is fine but how many of them are 16 year old kids who have only just done there GCSE's when he hits his peak I will be just about ready to hang up my 5 a-side boots!
