He won't sign in January (even though one of the reasons why he wouldn't is out of the door, European eligibility)

At the current rate I think main aim will be to qualify for champ league next year chances of winning anything this year without any additions to the squad I just cant see happening sadly.

That may be the reason why we do invest in someone, there's something clearly up with Fletcher's fitness at the moment and with Cleverley and Anderson seemingly injury prone we're effectively now down to central midfield options of Carrick, Jones, Giggs and Park

You forgot Gibson.

Seems like a perfect time for them to sign someone tbh. Can spend the back end of this season bedding him in, hit the ground running a fresh next season rather than wasting any time then trying to integrate him. Worked pretty well for us with Dzeko.

Doesn't mean you have to write this season off but I'd say it certainly reduces the chance of harming the next one.

What will put Fergie off is that he said there was only 3 or 4 players that could improve our midfield (I know, funny right) and they weren't available. They're not going to be any more available in January. We'd have to pay top dollar and I just can't see him doing it.

He needs to now though, its fair enough having confidence in our squad at the start of the season but they've proven this season that the players aren't good enough

I still really like Carrick but tbh we should be in a position where he's playing Carling Cup games due to the competition for places in the team instead we're ruing missing him against some team from Switzerland

We're in a position now where needs must, if not in January then certainly in the summer

I seem to recall reading something like that (on here actually I think). Could possibly just be time for him to swallow his pride and get someone in for some sort of psychological boost. Even if he doesn't think he's one of the 3 or 4 (would love to know who they are), anyone could have a welcome impact. I'm sure there are plenty of fans that would be happy with just some sort of sign that they're recognising issues and trying to fix them.

I think Fergie will have to buy in January, with Spurs improving and the fact you can't rule out Arsenal and maybe Liverpool, a top 4 spot isn't looking as certain as it always has.

I don't think he will sign anyone.

Our Jan transfers since 2006:

Larsson on loan - 2007
Manucho - 2008
Fabio - 2008
Rafael - 2008
Tosic - 2009
Ljajic (never came, but 2009)
De Laet (2009)
Smalling (Pre contract 2010)

I am interested in who people genuinely believe we could sign in January that would be good long term and not just as a stop gap. I can't see him signing a stop gap definitely.

Never seen him personally but Javi Martinez is the one being spoken about, 28m buyout though. 23 and by all accounts (going by Henry Winters timeline) one of Spains best players during the under 21's tournament

We're in the situation now though that we really need 3 or 4 midfielders not just one, would be nice if we could raid Barca like Chelsea did as the kid they got from Barca looks the real deal (unsurprisingly)

Javi Martinez is great but he's not a creative player. He's just an intelligent DM who distributes well, but simply. I'm pretty sure he was playing CB last time I watched Bilbao, he is awesome though

Javi Martinez could be for United like what Yaya Toure is for us, I certainly wouldn't be too happy about them getting him. He's a little unfortunate he's Spanish really because he'd likely be getting a lot more recognition anywhere else!

Martinez like Yaya Toure?

From what I've seen of Martinez he's a younger, inferior Xabi Alonso.

edit: that's not meant to be a criticism of him btw. There's a lot of excellent players that aren't as good as Alonso.

Martinez has the ability to read the game and he is penchant for no-nonsense passing. . So far he has adapted well to the change of position and the Athletic defense looks the stronger for it.

Going out of the Champions League might increase the chances of Fergie buying someone in January, though knowing Fergie he'll let it pass by.

lol of that list Cleverley, Nani, Young, everyone else sucks balls and aren't good enough to win titles. Yes, they are good enough to win titles against the disaster that has been the rest of the league for the past 5 years.

Even while Chelsea were winning titles their team was a shambles, no depth, some utter dross in the first team while a certain core of players kept them winning. Utd have been winning the league while Arsenal with actually a good team up till a couple years ago, have been doing their best to throw the title, Chelsea have had a crap team, Liverpool imploded and Spurs just weren't good enough at that point. Utd just had the best of the worst teams.

City have done something Chelsea haven't, and built a real damn team. Utd need an entire central midfield + backup, + Cleverley, no one they have is good enough except him. Wingers, I'd go for one new one and have Valencia in Park's role of, carling cup or when you have no other choice.

Carrick is suddenly under less attack by Utd fans than usual, he's the best of a bad bunch, but still woefully inadequate.

That list would look different if you hadn't arbitrarily cut it off conveniently after Vidic and Evra were signed in a January window, in fairness.

That wasn't on the page I took it off - apologies.

Vidic & Evra only made 14 apps in all competitions after that (0 in Europe, 4 in the Cups, 11 in the league.)

So I would say my point of buying in a player in that window that was going to be the main person is still unlikely.
