Doubt Fergie will splash any cash in January, he doesn't really need to in my opinion, our squad is good enough for the league, just needs to give em a kick in the arse to get them playing well again

You need three or four? Who's leaving, then?

You have Cleverley, Carrick, Fletcher, Valencia, Nani, Young, Anderson, Park, Giggs and Gibson. Obviously the latter two could be cut off, with Giggs being rather old (so this could be his last season), and Gibson being rubbish. That still leaves eight, most of whom are young, or mid-twenties (Park being the exception, at 30).

Which of those aren't good enough and should be culled? What number would you want left, after those three or four acquisitions?

Little point naming the wingers so remove Nani, Young & Valencia off the list
As I said last night we should be in a position where Carrick, Anderson, & Fletcher aren't relied upon as first choice but more squad players
Giggs if this season is anything to go by is finally looking to be on his last legs, I'd expect him to renew his contract for one final year but play even less next season
Park looks shot as well although IIRC he's recently signed a contract extension so I'd make him 4th choice winger
Gibson will be sold as soon as someone wants to buy him

Ideal scenario for me would be to have Cleverley pushing for a first team place along with 2 new signings. Carrick to be 4th choice and Fletcher and Anderson to be quite a bit behind those hypothetical 4 and on Carling Cup duty.

Maybe 3 or 4 new signings in midfield was an exaggeration looking at it like that but it'd still only take 3 injuries and we'd be back in the same position as we are now.

Signed him? I can't see this news?

You boys need him I reckon, think your good form will probably detoriate over Christmas, being overachieving till now :p

Busy week to forget to put the news story for it ;)

We'll be fine at home and just need to nick a few away wins, but we did need to sign him...

And OI! not overachieving! Just everyone else in the champ has been such a let down :p

Just read that Balotelli's younger brother is on trail at stoke, Can the premier league cope with 2 of them!! :O

lol of that list Cleverley, Nani, Young, everyone else sucks balls and aren't good enough to win titles. Yes, they are good enough to win titles against the disaster that has been the rest of the league for the past 5 years.

Even while Chelsea were winning titles their team was a shambles, no depth, some utter dross in the first team while a certain core of players kept them winning. Utd have been winning the league while Arsenal with actually a good team up till a couple years ago, have been doing their best to throw the title, Chelsea have had a crap team, Liverpool imploded and Spurs just weren't good enough at that point. Utd just had the best of the worst teams.

City have done something Chelsea haven't, and built a real damn team. Utd need an entire central midfield + backup, + Cleverley, no one they have is good enough except him. Wingers, I'd go for one new one and have Valencia in Park's role of, carling cup or when you have no other choice.

Carrick is suddenly under less attack by Utd fans than usual, he's the best of a bad bunch, but still woefully inadequate.

What a load of baloney. Jose Mourinhos side was one of the best sides in Europe if the best. The level in recent years has increased for sure.

:D .. That was a nice suggestion..
Though I think Man U still need some great players to strengthen more the squad.. :)

Dont forget Jones - he may not be a natural midfielder, but I reckon he will play enough games in a cm position before the end of the season to count as a main option if you see what I mean :)

While I agree with you , I highly doubt Fergie will drop Fletcher that far

It was tragic seeing Scholes play on for one or two seasons longer than he really should have, and the same has to be said of Giggs (certainly this season so far has been awful, and rumours of a one year extension are fluttering around as usual)

I hope SAF sees the need to splash the cash in Jan - but I cant see him spending big money on any one player (which is really what the team needs, the young age but proven quality that always costs $$$$)

team really needs a left back (I wish Fabio wasnt so fragile) , at least one (more) versatile centre half, a creative CM and a reliable striker to alternate with Rooney/Hernandez and Welbeck while selling /letting go Diouf, Owen, Berba Macheda, Gibson (I would like to include Evans, but thats unlikely) at the very least

Given that SAF rarely spends at all in Jan, and the reported £20m shortfall from income from the CL fiasco, I cant see many if any of those happening in Jan.....but I would LOVE to be proved wrong

What the...

I meant Maynard, thought you had meant you had singed him!

Hahaha! Ohhhhh...

Yeah Jos is a signing every saints fan is excited about. Signing Maynard would be one of those were going to win the league moments ;)

Wouldn't mind Albert Adomah too, he seemed pretty good!

Darren Can mentioned it on his twitter that Alex might not be a bad short term solution now Vidic is injured, can't see Chelsea being apposed to selling to us given he's surplus there now. Would cost less than 4m imo as well.

That said I do subscribe to the belief that we don't necessarily need to buy, not with Smalling and Jones in reserve and then there's always the question of what you do with the panic buy when everyone's fit in 6 months

Make sure he's good friends with Berbatov? :D

Poor Owen, he doesn't even get to make friends any more he's that far back, Berba has took his place of the meeter and greeter of the unwanted :(

Im not too bothered about January, we have BEBE2000 due back in the new year. I think we can safely write this season off now as a 'false start' i.e we ran before we could walk so to speak.

If we did sign someone like Hamsik, it would be nice, but unlikely.

give credit where its due - thats pretty witty :D

Thats why the team buys someone they always had an intention on buying - just in a different window (just to use a common / old rumour) like buying Rodwell from Everton so that Jones can be played in his natural position, or a left back to replace Evra (even though that doesnt really help the rest of the team in the squad sense like buying a midfielder /centre half would)

Interesting point on the Rodwell thing - would Everton sell him in January? I could see him being sold in the summer possibly, but he's been steadily improving from what I've seen and has made 10 or so appearances in the league for them this season.

We've also been linked with Ross Barkley a lot from Everton as well.

I could see us going in for either of those, we have been heavily linked in the past - but they are young players still. I just don't know who we would go for that is 'established'.

Everton would definitely sell for the right offer (£25m rumoured in the past), they seem to be collecting enough points to be safe from relegation and need the cash.

Interestingly sky just showed what happened the January window after Benfica knocked us out of the UCL in 2005, we signed Vidic and Evra who the next season after being bed in for 4 months helped us reclaim the title

Be interesting to see if Fergie does bring some of his summer business forward (a Rodwell like Bucket mentioned for example) and hope for a similar impact next season.....

sorry I didnt actually mean to imply Utd would go for Rodwell , I think the possibility died a while ago - I also cant see SAF splashing £20m or so in Jan on one player thats relatively untested. Ross Barklley is another that could be a summer signing, but is even less tested (the Utd rumours have seemingly died on both of these - but who knows). I was just using Rodwell as an example from the past

Martinez seems to keep on cropping up - this might be an option , but majority of midfielders Utd are currently linked with are still playing CL football in Feb, so I cant see them moving before the summer (if at all)
