January Transfer Window 2017/18

This has definitely been one of the more interesting January transfer windows.

I think Mahrez will probably go by the sound of it, he's desperate and Leicester won't want to decline this sort of money and have an unhappy player. He agreed to stay another year last summer to see if they can grow the club and they haven't, but they'll be ok without him.

I've just checked the numbers and it looks like Arsenal have managed to break their transfer record whilst only making a net loss of £8m during this window.

I'm so glad the board have decided to respond to fans' concerns and invest heavily in the team /sarc

Ornstein said there are 'whispers' that Arsenal want David Luiz or Manolas from Roma. The latter would probably be better, Luiz is good but always a potential liability.

DM is going to explode, Ozil signs a new 3 year deal worth around £350k :D

Extortionate but at least it shows intention, hopefully this and Auba can bring some much needed confidence to the team. We've got a good enough 11 for the top 4, it might be too little too late but if Auba and Mkhi can hit the ground running at least the end of our season won't be so miserable.

IT doesn't show intention, it shows desperation. Which round of 16 CL game can you remember Ozil being amazing in? Intention is recognising he is weak mentality, he was weak at Real, he's made zero different to the end result of the team since joining Arsenal. Remember how him and Sanchez were supposed to take us back to the top of the table and more competitive in europe? After resoundly failing to have a genuine impact on the team we reward him with nearly doubling his wages and locking him in with now no chance to get rid of him? Does he appear, while being a giant girl, that he's going to be someone who ages well?

Intention would be going hey, this player has X value, he makes nice passes under no pressure but is frequently poor under pressure, he's not a big game player, he's not worth more than 150k a week, if he wants much more than that cut him loose and invest in someone younger, hungrier who has the potential to be the player who makes the difference in the big games.

Cut Ozil loose, make the offer for Malcom or some other promising player. Intention is not shown by throwing money at a player who over the last 3.5 years has proven to have a poor mentality, be weak, not be a top player, it's desperation and stupidity.

You have to really ask yourself, why didn't Utd actually make a bid for Ozil, why didn't PSG, or City, why do City want Mahrez or Sanchez but no interest at all in Ozil, Bayern, anyone else, no offers for Ozil in the last two windows when Sanchez had offers in both windows.

Why were Real quite happy to upgrade from Ozil if he's that good and why didn't Real win CL titles again till he, you know, left. He looked good and made nice goals, in the easier games for Real, but when it came down to the toughest games and the most pressure, Real took a large step forward as he left and for good reason.

Also while I think Auba is a great player.... well, I'm still not sure it's the right move, firstly the money for a guy turning 29 within what 5 months is pretty crazy as where as with Lukaku and Morata they have plenty of time to be sold for a hefty price in the future, Auba won't be yet cost not much less but also squad/team wise, well again, we'll have to see what the plan is.

Right now the most obvious simple change is playing the same formation but dropping Lacazette for Auba, which means we spent ~60mil on a nearly 29yr old to replace a guy we bought for 50mil 6 months ago. If we went 4-4-2, again that really means Ozil and Micky out wide in which neither are very fast or really suit being wide players, so again odd. One of Auba or Lacazette out wide immediately means having spent 50+ mil on a central striker only to stick them out wide where I'm not sure either will be brilliant.

Also for all this, we're selling our super sub to a direct rival which will leave us without a target man style alternative as a tactical option. Again personally with Auba I feel like that needs to be a switch to 4-4-2 and in doing that we should have sold Ozil and bought an out and out wide man. Right now although I think Auba is great, I can't see the plan for how he'll work with the squad as is and I also think he's massively overpriced due to his age and future value.

This was my thinking as well. Just look at his stats against top 6 teams across all leagues etc. They are garbage. Hes a passenger in big games who won't help them get champions league football back and they've made him one of the highest paid players in the world. Mental!!

I agree with the first half and disagree with the second.

You don't play for Madrid if your a poor player. Mourinho supposedly did want him and contact has been made by PSG and United.

Remember he has also won the World Cup with Germany.

He's know as the assist king for a reason.

Yes you do, lots of poor players have played with Real, the important thing is they pushed him out the door, mistakes get made and Real improved significantly without him.

Winning the world cup is also a different kettle of fish, firstly international football is by and large... not good. Also even in the world cup he wasn't remotely close to Germany's best player, he had a couple better games earlier on but was a passenger for huge portions of the harder games. Muller and others were frankly a completely different level to him. Bastion and Muller probably more than anyone else dominated the games where Ozil just disappeared.

That’s painful seeing Giroud leave for Chelsea *spit*.

But on the other hand he needs game time in order for him to go to the WC with France. Which he won’t get with arsenal, i was hoping he would have agreed to go Dortmund on loan till end of season but his wife kicked up a stink about it and that was that basically.

I also somewhat agree with DM’s post, a bit lengthy but makes sense. I’m just hoping Wenger has some sort of plan to fit Lacazette, Aubameyang, Ozil and Mikhi into the team.

City ended pursuit of mahrez

Haha how much of a **** does he look, two transfer windows in a row hes failed to get out

Not really sure what your point is, he was instrumental in them winning a title they wouldn't ever have won without him and Leicester won't win again any time soon so him going is hardly terrible. Him being sold would mean a ridiculous profit and rewarding a player who brought them a miracle and can now do better for himself yet Leicester demanded apparently in total 95mil, 65mil cash + a 30mil rated player from City.

I'm not sure how you can put that on Mahrez. They sold Kante for 30mil, again instrumental and again they recognised he earned himself a move. City supposedly actually offered 65mil, Leicester are frankly both idiots and extremely unfair to Mahrez to demand more, 65mil itself is ridiculous.

Is there a slower forward than Giroud. I was terrified Everton where going to buy him in the summer. Nice work Chelsea going from Costa to Giroud and fair play to City for again refusing to have their pants pulled down.

He would have improved you lot but you know you would rather have Walcott, who by all intents and purposes is fast but lacks a footballing brain.

I think Giroud has his uses, target man for upfront when you are lobbing balls into the box. Something Fat Sam lives to do aka hoofball. So I don’t see why you were terrified of getting Giroud, he’s exactly the sort of player fat sam likes;).

Xhaka--Wilshere

Mkhi--Ozil--Auba

Laca

?
I don’t see that formation working, Auba is an out and out striker. Probably see him rotate with Lacazette I think with Ozil behind and Mikhi on the left/right wing depending on how Wenger feels on that day lol.
